Interesting, so very interesting. It’s a bit of history that is so relevant to our current throw away mentality and environmental concerns.

Takeaway for me: what we now call appropriation has been around for a very long time and is deeply ingrained in the culture of fashion. So much so that it's maybe impossible to escape...

Wonderful article LaP. As I've been on holiday and wandering through the big shopping areas here on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia, I've been so struck by the sheer quantity of clothing and the likely waste. I've enjoyed looking at some of it but the only thing I bought was the long elusive red sandals. I'm more determined than ever to wear my current stuff I think.

What a great piece. The things that shape the world are so often overlooked in history classes. I would love to know what archives they dug into to trace this history. My favourite book of all time is Janet Gleesson’s The Arcanum, about the start of European ‘china.’ Augustus, King of Poland etc., locked up this poor kid for his whole life to work on the secret of porcelain.

It also gives insight into why clothing and cloth was considered part of a dowry, if I remember correctly. Because they had real value.

Wow, I'm still thinking about this. It seems like what we today think of as fast fashion is something that has an extremely short lifespan, but what happened in the article took things from a very long lifespan to what we knew before the more recent changes. But what changed was the idea that we wouldn't wear the same garments for a very long time.
