Great topic. I've been wearing my Athleta hybrid pants with dressier toppers for lunch and shopping so I can change in the car into a birding or hiking topper and shoes for an outdoor activity afterward. This works well because I don't live in a city.

Brooklyn, love your summer uniform and I get lots of ideas from your WIW posts as we are drawn to similar silhouettes and patterns. I have a denim skort that is my go-to. Definitely a sporty and hard edge vibe. I'm with you on not being drawn to summer colors. A bright cream is my one exception.

Sarah, I think it is our juxtapositions between style elements, e.g., pretty and sporty -- and the individuality of those choices -- that make us each unique. The number of times I've created an outfit on hangers, but then hated it on me, usually can be sourced to missing a key element of my style (something soft, e.g., drape or a pattern with curves like floral; something structured; and something non-neutral) or proportions were off.

Bijou, interesting connection between watching sports and sporty and fun and playful vs. sporty. Yet another two definitions to consider in regards to sporty. Like you, I love being active but generally ignore all team sports. I like the fun and playful aspect of sporty.

LaPed, you're absolutely right that the definition of sporty has really changed. Love the archival shots. And love how material science has evolved into activewear and workwear that feels like activewear. Do you try to incorporate any of the maximal "Yama Girl" trend into your style? I tend to be more streamlined and inspired by Scandinavian style (albeit with more color).

Lisa, your style has really changed over the past year. Love that you're feeling more genuine. Athleisure has really evolved, from what used to be sloppy sweat pants and hoodies, to trim and stylish functional clothes that can take you through your day looking great. Cool Pumas!

Thanks, Suz! I love your juxtapositions of dressy and preppy. Great advice on transitioning to higher vamp shoes! Your sporty finds have a real pretty and refined element to them.

Shevia, interesting that you think sporty is more an attitude than a style. That jibes a bit with how I feel about the outfit that inspired this post. Can you provide an elaboration or example about what you mean?

Great thread! I am with the heavy walker but not otherwise sporty crowd. I would wear your outfit happily though. Sporty to me is more an attitude than a particular set of clothes I think.

Great topic. And you look terrific, Toban!

I am not "sporty" in the sense of watching sports or participating in them. But I'm very active and I do go to the gym regularly. I also do a lot of urban walking and a fair amount of trail hiking/ jogging.

I think my overall style overlaps with "preppy" a bit so what I like are juxtapositions. If I'm wearing fashion sneakers (and I do wear them) I prefer a dressy pant, a skirt, a blazer or a feminine blouse/ top. If I'm wearing a utility jacket or coat or denim jacket, I like to pair it with dressier items. (Though on weekends I might go full on tomboy).

I wear a lot of stripes, which can look a bit nautical, I suppose. Not that I have a clue how to sail a boat. And in cold weather I do like hoodies!

On the subject of flat and high vamp footwear -- it has taken me some time to get used to it. I've always preferred the leg lengthening qualities of lower vamp footwear, but alas, my narrow heels have always made wearing low vamps a difficult proposition unless there are straps involved to hold the shoe on. Booties were a hard sell for me at first and I still prefer to match my pants or tights to the bootie for lengthening effects, if possible...or to keep it lower contrast with my own colouring. OR to show a bit of skin. Baring ankles and going for a lower profile sneaker makes fashion sneakers more bearable for me.

Here are some non-gear "sportier" pieces in my closet.

Another interesting thread ....
I’ve tipped over the edge into full- on athleisure as often as I can get away with it . I morphed from working- woman suits and pumps , to less formal work wear ( that juxtaposition of a trendier casual jacket over dressier pants /skirt and top was a favourite ) to as athletic looking as my fat middle aged self will allow To me it’s a combination of comfort , function , modern style and flattery . I feel trimmer in athletic wear , but also feel genuine in it . Sports and fitness are a huge part of me - always have been and hopefully always will be . Today at work ( no cranky managers on duty on the weekends) I’m in Lulu tights, Lulu tank , UA sports bra , MPG zip up fitted hoodie and new Puma street shoes . I’d also be comfortable running errands anywhere in this getup ( and no , my middle -aged butt is not exposed ) .

Ooh, how did I miss this thread? Good topic! I like parsing the distinction between outdoorsy/sporty/athleisure/etc. I think it's important to remember that up until not too long ago, there were no gyms so "sporty" automatically implied "outdoorsy" and clothes for hiking, biking, golf, cricket, etc, all looked pretty similar. The rise of gym-wear (and now we even have "to/from" looks) has really changed what reads as "sporty" in contemporary culture.

Like Angie, I don't really do gyms at all. And like Runcarla, I don't wear my "real gear" casually. Still, my day-to-day style has a strong "active wear" component; the word "sportif" is a good one. I've been thinking a lot about how so much of what women wear on a day-to-day basis now has its roots in activewear. Some archival shots of women in their sportswear below. The wide trousers, split skirts/culottes, knitwear, polo collars, and chore jackets all feel very relevant to contemporary style.

I also like looking at the "Yama Girl" trend from Japan (photo 7) for inspiration. Often a mix of old-school "gear" (woolly socks and sweaters, leather boots) with more modern technical apparel (leggings, gore-tex, etc). The mash-up of quirky neon pieces with neutral, utilitarian ones is very appealing to me.

Oh, and one of my favorite birding bloggers, Bryony Angell, has a whole series of posts on "Style in the Field" which are really fun to look at if you're someone who likes to think about how to take utilitarian pieces and style them intentionally.

This is interesting because I exercise a lot, but don’t consider myself sporty because I am not interested in watching sports. So for me, sporty is not an adjective that I would use to describe myself or look to add to my style persona. My wearing of sneakers is more due to practicality and comfort rather than achieving a certain look.

However, perhaps I have been influenced by my recent trip to Japan, as I do wear hooded sweats under a leather blazer, I have pretty sneakers, I have a silky bomber jacket.... still I think this is more a reflection on dressing in a fun and playful way rather than being sporty.

I don’t think of my style as sporty at all but last summer I adopted a kind of hard edge (or tough) sporty style for casual wear on weekends. This basically consisted of black sporty skort, dark floral/graphic or other dark coloured tee, sporty sandals, leather necklace or bracelet. It was practical for the heat and a good way for me to avoid wearing shorts (which generally don’t flatter me). I am also not drawn to “summer colours”. Summer is a challenge for me!

You look fab Toban! I always like your floral choices

I am loving all these different perspectives about sporty! Definitely some variability in how we define it and what elements speak to us about sporty and how we incorporate it!

Suntiger ... I never could understand polo shirts as standard uniform, either. Perhaps a dated holdover from assumptions that men were doing the job? Both my husband and my female running partner look fantastic in one, though. But for me, a hard no.

Kellygirl ... it looks like we think similarly about this. Sleek, minimal, ease of movement, practical.

Runcarla ... we definitely have enough interest for a club. And definitely bring snacks. With my training, I am always hungry! I hear you on being tagged sporty in outfits that I wouldn't consider sporty. Neither of us wear gear. I wonder if there's an element about how we move in the outfit rather than the outfit itself? The choice in fabrics for movement? Unlike you, my footwear is the least sporty aspect of my style ... but I am revisiting it.

Angie ... Thank you! I am with you on needing pretty and refined and practical! I definitely see your Sporty Luxe component. I hadn't thought I had that component, but it looks like I draw from it in other ways than footwear. Beautiful sneakers. I think I need to experiment with low contrast sneakers or slip on shoes as a starting point. I tend to live in sandals from May through September, though, with our heat and my dislike of socks!

Chris, I think you nailed it on how I might consider bringing in sneakers into my style.

Sal, love the idea of sneakers with a sheen or soft color! Great thoughts on what constitute sporty to you. I might add hoodies and zipper sweater jackets (though I don't wear either).

Katerina, I love how you incorporate sneakers into your dramatic and dressy work wear as a juxtaposition. It works so well for you.

Christina, stripes definitely give a sporty vibe! Love your finds, especially those bronze sneakers!!! I have one low contrast striped top (purple and navy) and I definitely feel more sporty in it.

Angie, Gretchen, Christina, you all rock stripes!

Gretchen, I love your color-block v-neck and floral sneakers.

Sterling, I can see how Athlete pants and stripes work for you. I commented above to Runcarla, that I wonder sometimes if it's less about the clothes but more about how we move? I didn't think my clothing changes that much with my weight loss and active life and wouldn't have considered my choices sporty. Or may be it's because I am dressing more casually for work, rather than the blazer and dress pant or pencil skirt combo that was my go-to?

Rachylou, interesting thoughts. I agree that my outfit has a bit of an outdoorsy vibe (minus the 2.5" heels), especially with the colors. It doesn't read sporty to me, which is why I started this conversation. Yet, on reflection, there's definitely a sporty vibe. Come back and share your additional reflections!

Suntiger, thanks for coming back and adding additional thoughts. Regarding the dress, we both love simple sheaths. May be it's the simplicity and no-nonsense practicality of it. Many of my sandals are also cognac, camel and dark tan -- not surprising, since we share a similar color palette.

L'Abeille ... interesting addition of nautical to the sporty mix. Definitely fits, though I don't think I've incorporated any nautical elements other than a single Breton striped top.

Whew ... lots of amazing insights here. Thank you!

Interesting convo. I come at it from the opposite end: I have NO polish in my style, but I NEVER wear gear. My version of sporty is preppy, and I do mix in a lot of those elements, more so in summer. Nautical and preppy items like Breton stripes and sneakers.

At our last ski trip, while M Abeille was getting his custom boots fitted, I spent an hour in the Starbucks corner of a Chapters bookstore, and I devoured a book on nautical style. Fascinating how many items have nautical origin (military and fishing as well as sailing and rowing). Along with the obvious stripes, sailor pants, and middy blouses, they include: pea coats, blazers, espadrilles, penny loafers, cable knit sweaters.

Yes, I think of stripes as sporty too-at least in bright colors.
Weird to think of my lbd as sporty, since its a formal work dress! But very comfy :)
And agreeing about the low contrast high vamp shoes-thats why so many of my warm weather shoes are cognac and dark tan!

That’s so interesting. This is gonna be my pondering for the day. I wouldn’t have called your outfit sporty (it’s fab btw!) but I’d call suntiger’s sleeveless black dress there sporty. It occurs to me I differentiate between sporty and outdoorsy... your outfit has an outdoorsy element to me, the colours and materials. Stripes are sporty to me, racing and nautical connotations there. Hmm...

There is SO MUCH cross over in my life, I don't even know where to begin on this subject.

It is my goal to be both capable and practical. Sneakers are a great way to demonstrate both these attributes. I own three pair (one navy and two black). I wear them to work often when I don't have face-to-face meetings scheduled.

Then I slowly started adding in pants from Athleta that allow me to speed walk at lunch on cool days. Those days are sadly gone now that the heat has descended. Nonetheless, I like the aesthetic of those pants and continue to wear them.

I do wear stripes, but never considered stripes to be sporty. Perhaps I am wrong. If so, then I also wear stripes a lot because they make me happy.

With your level of physical fitness, it is not surprising that elements would start to creep into your everyday wardrobe. It seems a natural progression.

You look fabulous, Toban!
I can also see the sporty in your outfit. I think the sporty watch is one such element, apart from the jacket.

I am not an outdoor person and not a sporty one at all. My style is predominantly dressy, but I usually crave some juxtaposition to make my outfits less “serious”. A sporty pair of shoes (dressy sneakers or oxfords) often gives me that juxtaposition. I wear sportier shoes for comfort as well, I want to be able to walk a lot and stand a lot without changing shoes. I also like leather jackets, which I wear with more corporate pieces like classic wool trousers and silk scarves. Despite my preference for dressy outfits, I almost never wear skirts and dresses. Always some kind of trousers. Perhaps this is also my “sporty” style element.

Interesting topic- I think I tend to use the following.
- sneakers of course
- bomber style jackets
- knit fabrics for dresses and pants
- caps and hats
- stripes

Other ways that I don’t do but have seen
- logos on tees
- sweaters with zip necks

I do agree sporty can mean preppy, nautical, outdoorsy, active wear or maybe sporty luxe.

I do cross over some gear with my general wardrobe for weekend activities mostly. My biggest struggle is the sneakers : socks conundrum. My sneakers get smelly without socks but with cropped pants and dresses socks are not so flattering!

I like your look Toban. Maybe sneakers with a sheen or in a soft colour might be appealing to you.

What a great topic. I'll be following this one for sure. I especially can identify Toban with your wanting shoes with low vamps because it lengthens the leg line. I have the sense that in warmer weather where we tend to have some leg or ankle exposed, lighter color shoes are low enough contrast to skin tones that the low vamp is not as important, but I haven't quite figured it out. For example Angie's sneaker collection above, when worn with bare legs, would not visually shorten the leg line as much as equivalent shoes in darker colors.

First, you look FABULOUS.

La Ped, will have a lot to add here.

I am NOT sporty and athletic at all. Gyms are not my thing. I don't do Athleisure, and can barely handle wearing gear for hot yoga. You get the picture.

I am though VERY into the urban walking life, traveling, and walking dogs across all sorts of weather. Very hot to very cold - I'm like a postal worker. Driving makes me unhappy. Walking makes me very happy! Public transport is great too. So my feet need to be extremely comfortable. I wear sneakers a lot, and with my dressy daily outfits since I'm not a casual person. I'm a Sporty Luxe gal, and sneakers are the way I add Sporty to my style.

But they have to be pretty, very refined, and somewhat classic. I don't wear sneakers to work with clients unless they are very good friends. Here is my sneaker collection:

Shall we form a club? I'll bring the snacks!

I'll never be caught wearing yoga pants to the grocery store, but I still get tagged with looking sporty. Funnily enough the most sporty things I wear outside the gym are NOTHING like what I wear in the gym.

I totally agree that a certain comfort (and maybe preference) with close fitting/body con items that don't impede movement is a factor. Stretchy garments are more accommodating than woven, and close fitting garments don't get tangled around arms and legs the way more flowey garments do. I don't like the feeling of having my movement restricted.

Since retiring, my footwear of choice has been a canvas sneaker. Kitted out with inserts they are just so d@*% comfortable. I suspect if I changed the footwear up, some of the sporty vibe would be lost. Some clothing I've chosen might be considered athletic luxe - black pants with a 'jogger' tie waist, a 2016 silky embroidered jacket cut along baseball jacket lines, a silver foil t-shirt, stretchy lace tank tops. However, I don't purposefully look for athletic looking items, and even eschew gear style as much as possible!

FWIW - I can completely relate to your outfit posted above, Toban, and the finds, andmsuntiger's pic. Though I appreciate other styles and trends, swishy dresses (on me) drive me crazy!

I enjoy sporty style elements before it gets to athleisure. I think that's where I draw the line outside the gym. I agree with minimal and sleek without fussy details when it comes to style. It also seems to mean that you could do something sporty in them without too much trouble--so that to me means, jeans or similar pants, utilitarian jackets, etc. I'd definitely call your look with the denim jacket a modern sporty style!

Suntiger, thanks for sharing. I didn't think I had any overlap, either, but with the casualization of work wear it has started to overlap a bit. I am with you on liking sleek and minimal, unfussy elements in both my work wear and activewear. Perhaps it has something to do with something that shows our curves (i.e., close fitting) vs. boxiness? I'd add a third category of sporty, clothes that lean towards "preppy". When I say preppy, I mean items like polo shirts, which is a huge part of one of my friends looks but never part of mine. I generally hate collars with my short neck and I find most polo shirts are cut straight rather than fitted.

Love that top especially!
Though I'm Mrs Gym Rat, I don't like adding sporty to my regular outfits, so there's no crossover.
But-my gear and my regular clothes, and even sleepwear have elements in common: lots of black-burgundy, streamlined-uncluttered, and doesn't restrict movement. This scuba-ish LBD is an example.
I think there are really two types of sporty- sleek/minimal, and rugged/durable. #1 works well for me, but #2 just looks and feels wrong-even when needed for hiking and camping (which I love).
