Two words for you IK. White linen. Oh, you've figured that out?

A little humidity is nice for the skin, but too much mixed with high temps makes everyone CRANKY! We have not yet entered the Monsoon season of our summer, when the wind patterns shift and bring (unwelcome) moisture to our intense heat. When that happens, you will hear me start whining. It lasts for about two months and seems like forever. Anyone with money vacates the region.

It's supposed to reach 109F today, but with no humidity, it's not even bothersome. Look how this glass of ice water doesn't even sweat on the table. It's been there for 15 minutes. That freaked me out when I first moved here. The bottom dial on my thermometer is the relative humidity.

I will whine with you. I went to work this morning and then walked a block down to the convenience store and back. This was 7:30 AM. When I got back my hair was huge and wet. One stinking block.

Having spent my first 38 years in Florida you have my deepest sympathy. Right now I'm in the Midwest, where it does get humid and I do complain, but it's nothing like Florida was.

Diana, let me know when you're in town! Maybe we can coordinate a DC meetup! And the pool is always open.

I am glad many of you find the humidity helps your skin, but boy, mine doesn't seem to like it. I can't believe I still produce this much shine and breakouts on my face at the age of almost 47.

I hear ya. I live in Wisconsin and we get very humid summers. Heck, on Memorial Day it was 93 degrees and humid. It gets to a point where I simply don't venture outside for long periods of time in the summer. Like a vampire. And I don't want to accessorize. Or move, for that matter.

As a result, I've tried to stock my closet with a number of easy-to-wear dresses that can stand on their own. All I need is a great bag and sandals. When it gets super hot and humid, I rely heavily on knit dresses from Athleta and Patagonia. That might sound gearish, but they're not. It's really the best way (for me, anyway) to still look put together AND be comfortable in the heat. I just don't think synthetic fabrics and accessorizing are rational choices when the temps and humidity are at their highest.

I like a hot, humid summer while I'm on *vacation*! I usually run cold, so a little H&H makes it easier to strip off and enjoy a swim suit.

But yeah, other than that, I'll take a dry desert heat, thank you! I love Palm Springs and Indio.

I just wanted to add that I grew up in SoCal. So Boston is way too humid for me! I would seriously rather have 95 and dry than 75 and humid. For the first few summers I lived here, the humidity would regularly make me feel nauseous and I found it hard to breathe. I'm a little more used to it now but still hate it.

Janet, I wish I had a pool! I am coming to DC for a meeting in mid-June - if the humidity continues to be like this, you might find me knocking on your door with my bathing suit on. =P

I will never complain about a British summer again!! Ok just a little moan allowed I too hate humid summers but for me it's because I can't breathe properly when it's humid. The last few days have been humid here and it's just started raining, I'm over the moon. I agree with other posters about the skin benefits I get exzema between my fingers in the winter and 2 weeks of good weather and it's all gone x

I will say a few things in defense of humidity. After living in the tropical rain forest climate of Central America, without heat or A/C, I prayed that we'd be able to move to a drier climate. Well, the next place we moved to was the Texas panhandle, where it is so windy and dry that my skin cracked open and bled, I had frequent nosebleeds, and it STILL felt hot and miserable when the temperature got over 80 degrees F. Also, because of the extreme climate change, my piano had to have $1k worth of work done on it. Thank God the soundboard didn't crack or warp. Had that happened, I would have had to buy a new instrument. We then moved to southern New Mexico, where it was still hot and dry. While my nosebleeds and cracked skin became a thing of the past, the desert wind blew sand up my nose, etc. I'm not unhappy to be in Georgia. Yes, it's humid, but my skin likes the humidity and my house has heat and A/C. It's just when I have to spend time outdoors that I get grumpy and complain.

I have to say that I have only really experienced high humidity once - Washington DC in August - and it sucked. I have fog in my blood and can't imagine how you all survive and look polished through the summer.
My sympathy.

Ok,people, I have to say something in defense of the heat and humidity. Granted, it is miserable if you're stuck out in the sun and humidity for hours at a time, but think how great your skin will look with all that moisture! I grew up in Oklahoma, and have lived in houston are off and on for the last 25 years, so I know what I'm talking about. As compensation for our uncomfortable summers, we have fabulous, lovely winters where it rarely gets down to freezing and there's no snow shoveling. Just sayin'. :). And if you want you can get a tan in October.

IK, I am right there with you, honey. It doesn't seem fair to me, I don't even live in the deep south! I swear, when we retire someday, we're moving where there is low humidity. I went for a 2-mile run this morning (75 degrees and 80% humidity), and I was sweating more after 20 minutes than I do after a full hour of running in drier weather. My husband kissed my cheek and said I was a salt lick!

So I jumped in the pool and swam for another 20 minutes. That's my favorite antidote to the weather here. That and those Edy's frozen fruit bars, yum.

Argh, me too. I just want to take 8 million cold showers a day. And I live in Boston, so I can't even imagine what it must be like down in Texas. Yikes.

To top it off, I have no car (so my commute involves walking outdoors, plus bus or subway where it is anyone's guess whether the AC works), my lab is weirdly warm/humid (unlike almost every other lab I've been in), and my apt. only has AC in the bedroom.

I hate summer too, but hate it even more when it's humid. I don't live in an overly humid area right now, but it is way too hot for my liking.

I have traveled to places like Texas in July & August. YIKES. The first time was Houston in July - and I couldn't believe how just walking from the hotel exit to the car meant my sunglasses getting all steamed up and my clothes sticking to me before I've even gone anywhere. And this is at 7 a.m. How it was better to drive the air-conditioned car to a restaurant that was only a block and a half away, because it was simply too hot and muggy even for that little jaunt.

Only very simple and loose-fitting clothes will do.

Here's hoping this is the fastest summer ever and that it just flies right on by.

Hang in there IK.
