Have you tried American Apparel? I got a navy gingham button down that I am wearing to death. They have both long and short sleeved, small gingham, bigger plaids, lots of color options. I'd recommend giving them a look.

Angie: yes, I can see how the non-plaid works better for you. I do like solids (I have a solid black one) but on the whole, for some reason, shirts work better for me if they're either plaid or gingham. But therein lies the problem: not a lot of choice in plaids for the gals. Or, not to suit my taste, at least.

I've got to say, I'm really liking the look of a breezy shirt, buttoned only partially, overtop of a tank top and skinny jeans.

Dianthus: yes, so much choice for the guys! I find myself looking longingly at the menswear and wishing I were six inches taller.

The flip side is that we seem to be finding nothing but plaids for men this year. Not for dress shirts but for more casual shirts.

I am buying more button shirts now too but I seem to go back and forth every year or two.

Thank you, Inge! I like all of those -- in fact I have an RVCA black plaid one very similar to the one on the Urban Minx link. I agree, that collarless gingham one that you like is adorable.

In the past, I have been mostly a knit kind of girl. I wear a lot of fitted tee shirts, tank tops and muscle shirts (I only call them that because of the cut. It's certainly not because of my pitiful biceps!). But over the past year or so, I've started collecting button-down shirts. I used to only wear them in the fall/winter, but this summer I got a couple of really lightweight ones, and it has been a style epiphany. They are the perfect thing for warm weather; light and breezy, worn open with a cami or buttoned up, they look good with both pants and skirts and, best of all, don't cling to your belly or your armpits! Why did I not think of this before?

I prefer the plaid or check shirts to the solid colours, but here's my biggest question: why oh why do they make such ugly plaids for women? I browse the men's section, which is FULL of awesome plaid colours, but the women's only ever has two or three choices, and often it's a pastel pink or purple. I like grays, greens, reds, blues, blacks, etc. Does anyone know where you can get good (read: traditionally coloured) lightweight plaid shirts for women?
