You made the right decision Karie. The sit test is an important one. If there is poofing and billowing in the wrong places, then you will not be happy with the skirt, no matter how nice the fabric. (White cotton eyelet is lovely, so I can see why it caught your eye initially.) And that the skirt was not playing well with the tops you already have is yet another reason to pass on it.

Agree with your final decision. I'm an IT with a mommy tummy and these type of skirts don't suit me. I think they are best for pears or hour glass shapes that have hips to offset any tummy issues.

I'm also a rectangle with midsection issues ( I blame elastic waists!), and would not feel fab in a skirt like that no matter how pretty. For a summer skirt, it is hard to beat the comfort and look of a tube skirt. I have added a slightly flared linen skirt for summer. It has a slightly stretchy waist but hangs close to th body. You will find something better that you love.

I am also a rectangle shape person, Karie, at least so far as the not-much-waist is concerned (though I am also a bit IT). This is a skirt shape I don't choose myself because I find it looks wider than I like.

El Cee, I live in the Albany area and yes we do get those hot and humid days! But I will most likely pass up the skirt for a pair of shorts or one of my straight cotton dresses on those days.

I tried on a few tops from my closet with the skirt and wasn't all that happy with the results. And then I sat down (I always forget to do this test in dressing rooms) and POOF - the whole thing billowed out in the waist area. Bye bye pretty skirt. Back you go to the store!

I have the same issue which is why I don't wear this style. There are plenty of skirts with flat elastic waistbands that work so much better for me. Plus you sound torn. And top lengths for this kind of skirt can be a problem - worn over the waistband they may pouf out, but tucked emphasizes the belly unless you wear a belt, and then it's not breezy. And cropped also doesn't work for my midsection issues.

Not that I see such issues with you! Just pointing out the cons as I see them.

I prefer the smaller size of the two, but I'm going to suggest passing on the style. This type of elastic waist is not the best idea when you are self conscious about your midsection - which Karie, you mention over and over again. My guess is that it's going to pouf out just a little too much and become an orphan.

Karie -- Here are my 2 cents: I very much like the skirt on you. I think it is a flattering fit. It looks to be a nice, easy-breezy summer option for those days when it is really humid and sticky and you do not want to even think of wearing pants, shorts or (God forbid) Spanx (and yes, you can certainly wear the skirt without these). And I know that even in upstate New York you can get those kind of days. I have lived in both the Albany area and in Syracuse. We got a lot of uncomfortably humid days in July and August. 100% cotton skirts are so perfect for that kind of weather. And they are also perfect for warm weather vacations. Just add a tank or tee and some nice sandals and you are ready for any nice outing. It may also be a useful item for early September school days when the weather can still be quite warm. If your school does not have AC, the skirt could come in handy in May, June and September. So -- will it get the wear that your shorts get? Probably not. If you decide to keep it, it may not get the "cost per wear" of other items in your wardrobe. Can you be OK with that? If the answer is yes, I say KEEP. If no, I say PASS. I also suggest trying the skirt out with the tops you already have to see if the silhouette works with those tops. I wouldn't keep the skirt if you have to purchase new tops in order to make it work.

Thanks everyone! I hate being undecided. Here are my pros/cons:

Cons:
School is over in a week, do I really need another skirt for my mostly-shorts-wearing summer?
Is this flattering for my rectangular shape, or not so much, but is it at least JFE?

Pros:
Can wear without needing tummy controlling Spanx
Would be nice to wear for casual meals out & while on vacay
No I don't NEED it, but do I need any clothing that I buy? NO....

Thanks girlfriends! I did leave with the smaller size, but I'm still "deciding." The larger one was bulkier at the sides and did feel a bit overwhelming with that and the looser waist.

Isabel, the eyelet fabric is 100% cotton with a 100% cotton lining. It has a nice soft feel to it though. It does need to be pressed but I'm sure it'll wrinkle like crazy when I wear it. I'm at peace with the wrinkles as I love to wear cotton in the summer.

So here's my biggest concern: Being a rectangle and having a thicker waist I'm always cautious about skirts that have gathers. I think I look better in straight skirts, but then with straight skirts I need to wear Spanx to reign in my pudgy belly. With skirts like this no Spanx are needed! Hopefully this skirt is JFE, but if not, it's going back.

I'd say the smaller? I like the idea very much and think the white is very flattering on you but I'm not sure about the fabric? Is it a knit? It looks a little stiff and bulky on one side but it may be a photo effect. Or it may need to be steamed or pressed.

At J. Crew Factory. Without glasses, first pic is the smaller size (actually a size smaller than my normal).
With glasses, pic 2 is the bigger size (my usual size).

Both feel fine. The only fit difference is the elastic waist in the bigger size is slightly loose, but not too much.

Or is this style of skirt not flattering at all on me? You won't hurt my feelings!

PROS & CONS - I listed these in my response below. How do you finally decide when you're on the fence?
