I’ll be with you all in spirit. Living out of an Airstream for the coming weeks (months??) so I’m in plaid flannel shirts, tees, jeans, and hiking pants for the duration! Didn’t bring any sequins with me.

Vildy, you're right...though as outerwear, there's a small (tiny) chance these might get some wear....

I would be up for a "mad tea party" dressup adventure, Lisa. It's sad not to wear our fab clothes!

We could do a virtual fancy party one day this week - everyone pick out an outfit to go nowhere in and take a pic of yourself having a mad tea party.

Nothing impressive here either - like Cardiff Girl, I don't have the temperament; I'm much happier in the 'understated' camp and would be very uncomfortable if someone was 'impressed' with my clothing!

I’m neglecting probably 80% of my closet right now, so yeah, I can relate to this even if my items are not “impressive” by the author’s standards.

I mean, not only is there not an occasion to wear something like the Rockstuds, but it also feels like, I don’t know, not the right time or something, you know? These days feel too somber to swan about in $1000 shoes, at least to me.

Even some items that are not designer or expensive that are statement-y or dressy are just going to have to wait until the post-Covid era.

Thanks for sharing! I definitely have some clothing that is collecting dust mostly formal wear and some avant-garde pieces by Rachel Comey, Zero &Maria C. and Rick Owens. I have worked hard to create a wardrobe that reflects my personality and also the personal characteristics I want to amplify for others, and as such, even my more creative choices are fairly simple and conservative.

I read her biography and can understand her comment as her dress sense in the previous decades shaped her life, it is a very interesting story. Nowadays, everything is so ubiquitous that a quirky or distinctive dress sense doesn't really connect to interesting people.

My wardrobe is quite "bland" for her standards but I'd like to think that those pieces can show my personality...

I think I have one artisan topper that is noticeable. It has massive tropical flowers on it and was either hand painted or the material was made from photographing (or something similar) said artwork. It certainly makes an impression but I don’t know if it is impressive. I go back and forth on whether or not it is JFE. It fails JFE in photographs.
I have not worn my dressier items-the dressier black skirt, more ornate tops, dress sandals. I have worn one somewhat dressy dress for a virtual baby shower. But I wouldn’t call it impressive.

Yes— I am not going to wear any theater/ gala/ holiday attire, it seems. A few such items shown below.

I do think that, as weather cools a bit, which makes experimenting more comfortable and possible, that I might try the idea of doing things with “color and proportions “ or whatever she said, in modest ways, to the grocer and home supply store and maybe for my occasional physically- distant friend visit. Wearing a jacket, choosing a belt, figuring the pants length.

I am in love with so many interesting pieces of wearable art, but I have always avoided buying them. This pandemic induced lockdown has made me realize I want to stand out more in my off-work hours. I WANT people to judge me, I want them to wonder what I was thinking, I want then to scratch their heads.

Maybe this feeling isn't pandemic induced. Maybe it is the natural evolution of my rebellion against societal mores and norms as understood through the lens of uniform dressing at the big box grocer and wearing things I won't cry over at the produce stand (because this produce stand has chewed up an entire outfit today alone). Maybe it's realizing that I've reached that age where I'm no longer a weirdo or freak; I'm now just eccentric and don't care who thinks im a weirdo or freak ;-)

Much like "appalling color", I think I'm going to steal the term "sartorial concoctions" from you, Rachylou. Because I love it!

And now, I am on a mission to find a taffeta full length formal skirt with pockets to wear with something INTERESTING

Those are really amazing pieces of clothing! Wow.

So, I don't really own anything that impressive. My artiest clothes are probably my Comrags items and they are also exceptionally wearable (even in a pandemic).

I think my most "impressive" items, though, are structured dramatic ones...and it is true, I'm not wearing them. Just too much for sitting around at home.

Well, I must say that it’s been a sad thought for me that there will be no holiday gatherings. I want to fill the void. I do like to make special, slightly startling sartorial concoctions for them. It’s an interesting question, tho, as to whether I own anything impressive in itself and not due to the fact it’s part of a concoction. Of course, what impressive thing I really want but shall never buy is a Puffy Ballgown, lol

interesting thoughts.l agree that I love to see others still dressing stylishly,it makes things feel alittle but more normal but I have never had the lifestyle for impressive clothing and I don’t have the temperament.lm not paticularly happy if I think people are making judgements about me based on my clothing and I think that, rightly or wrongly, wearing impressive clothing may invite such which is fine if it doesn’t trouble you.

I'm finding joy in being my own muse. Nothing wrong looking like Moira Rose from Schitt's Creek. Being flamboyant can be comforting in addition to providing a glimmer of optimism during somber times.

The most impressive things I'm not wearing at this moment are special occasion/evening wear items. There's no ballet/opera/concerts/plays to attend so those items remain unworn for the time being. I will not put them in the HZ as long as they still fit and they are suitable for where I currently am on my style journey.

From the New York TImes' dance critic

"You have a more interesting life,” the fashion designer Vivienne Westwood once told The Independent, “if you wear impressive clothes.”

[Fabbers: what's the most impressive thing you're not wearing lately?]

"Over the past few months, I have found myself in an embarrassing situation. I have a closet full of impressive clothes, and while life is strangely interesting right now, it’s not because I am wearing any of them. They have nowhere to go. They hang, sadly collecting dust and wrinkles, until every now and again I climb the spiral staircase to my version of a walk-in closet — it’s the shabby half of the second floor of a loft with racks from The Container Store — to give them a shake. But mostly I zip in and out.

I hate the phrase “wearable art”; I’m not a collector. I don’t like the word “fancy” to describe clothing. In recent years, I am turned off by dresses and skirts. I like to wear clothing, no matter how bizarre, as casually as possible; to mix and match according to mood and (crucial) weather; and if I fail, it’s like writing. I can try again tomorrow.

I like to recycle. If I fall out of love with something, instead of regretting it, off it goes to Beacon’s Closet — the Beacon’s on Bogart Street. I love the staff. They love my clothes. When I take stuff there, I usually find something better. Before the coronavirus happened, my time of rest and relaxation was a deep dive through the racks after a Sunday matinee. I didn’t have to buy a thing.

This might have something to do with how I was raised. My brothers confirmed that when we were growing up there were occasions when the family would walk off dinner at our local TJ Maxx, the only shop we could go in where there was something for everyone. At home, “TJ” was spoken with the sort of affection a normal family might use for a beloved pet. The minute I moved out of the house, my father took over my closet. We all know we have a coat problem. The only thing missing at my parents’ house are empty hangers.

A few years before the pandemic, I began toning it down. Interesting is a tricky word. While I dress for the art form that I cover — dance deserves respect — I was starting to feel scared that I might end up looking like the mom on “Schitt’s Creek.” I have seen real-life versions of Moira Rose at Dover Street Market. It is not for me. Clothes shouldn’t wear you. You can’t buy style. And right now the only fashion that matters is showing that you care about someone or something other than yourself. It’s a face mask and the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter.

But even though fashion can seem trivial at the moment, it’s still comforting to see someone out there — during an evening stroll or in line at the pharmacy — who knows what they’re doing with color and texture.
