I find the hip length coats jacket difficult to get right. I really like a Boden jacket I bought earlier this year but somehow it doesn’t feel quite right (may be this isn’t the type of jacket you mean?). Do you think this is meant to be hip length?

Lol, Jenni, you are going to think I’m stalking you to shake a Puffy at you (“Put This On!!!”).

But really, I’m just late to this convo. I’m trying to decide if I own this length coat/jacket without trying any of them on... I have simply never thought about this - just whether or not I feel a draft...

I'm on the north coast of metro Boston MA. For the most part, I find hip length coats to be warmer than longer ones. I like a hip length coat which has a tight band or drawstring to keep the wind from blowing underneath and thus keeping my torso warm. I have one very warm longer puffer, longer than mid-thigh but shorter than knee length. In order for it to actually keep me warm, it needs to be so snug on the bottom half that it is uncomfortable tight to sit in the car and too hot to wear to pop into the grocery store.

But I have identified a gap in my wardrobe. It would help me to have a longer length coat which works in the car and for errands and which is lightweight to carry but warmer than a raincoat. Retrieved my oldest (about 7 years old) coats of this genre and realized that they are way too large and loose to be at all warm.

Great point! My most worn winter jacket is a hip length lightweight puffer, especially for running errands, shopping, school drop-offs, etc. I'd rather do a few lightweight layers underneath instead of sweating in a huge, heavy parka!

I run cold too, but a longer coat is sometimes too wintery.
A hip length coat is perfect for fall in my climate. A blue version of your pink and white coat would be ideal for me.

My most worn coats by far are hip length lightweight puffers in fall, same length heavy weight in winter. Longer lengths interfere with my stride and you can toss a puffer anywhere and it won't get covered in lint!

I live in a warm climate and these actually count as "jackets/coats" in my neck of the woods. Light weight but keeps the "cool" air out, i.e. cool mornings or after 4:00pm when the warm sun begins to go down. The black BR jacket has been a workhorse since 2005!!! One of my all time favorites.

Hahaha!
I was going to say the same thing about lighter weight mid- thigh coats!
I am wearing this BR one when other folks are in a sweater ( if that).
I enjoyed your post today and this “qualifier” is even more to the point; it reminds me that proportions and silhouettes are most fundamental— what lengths and styles are flattering and work with what outfits— pants vs dresses, etc. Then, match the weight and colors with the seasons, or really, temps, expected. Use all that to create a functional and fun coat capsule.

An example for me might be, “ heavy blazers”. I love the fabrics and colors often offers and I can’t resist a few, but they’re not that pract because I almost always like blazers unbuttoned, so for me the warmth factor disappears in the slightest chilly breeze unless underlayers are very warm! I can wear them in milder weather if they don’t look too seasonally confused. It’s a reminder that “ winter blazers” are actually fall, for me, so, while I don’t organize my wardrobe in strict seasonal capsules, I need to haul these out before it’s really cold.
I’m warmer in a lighter buttoned or zipped coat than in an open heavy coat- more insulating, natch.

So that’s another good style alert for me . For example, I love trench coats and lightweight coats worn open for that sporty, effortless look, but I ought to be sure they look good both ways in order to be really useful.

I would probably wear one in your climate, too, Angie. Though I'm still not certain how often. When I'm out walking I like to cover my rear end because it gets chilly if there are high winds etc.

I often layer in such weather, too. Around this time of year I will wear a blazer and a light raincoat over top. If I had a warmer wool jacket at hip length perhaps I would not need to layer.

A number of you have said on the blog post today that you don't see the point of the hip length coat because if you're going to wear a coat - it needs to be MORE insulating. Read on:

You might find it interesting to hear that hip length coats are VERY practical for people who run cold like me. They are warmer than leather jackets - which I can only wear in much warmer weather (like late Spring and Summer). So I wear my hip bone coats in Fall, on very MILD Winter days, and one style into Spring. I am wearing my hip length coats a lot now. And my heavy weight blazers - Boden and Smythe.

They are also very practical when you run hot or when your Winters are mild (like Sterling and Bijou suggested in the comments section).

Hip length coats still might not work for you, but I desperately wanted to clear that up.

AND, here in Seattle, the short hip length puffer - across a few thicknesses - is THE most worn topper on the street by women, men and kids. (Think Uniqlo). Puffers are taking over the world. Sneakers too.
