If we were definitely staying here, these (in "charcoal leather") would be great shoes for work and play with pants, skirts and dresses. Sigh.

Me, Aida. I battle feeling "wintery" and wanting to buy "wintery" clothing. Today is December and I am wearing a linen blouse over jeans. I combined the linen shirt with my "summery" silver earrings. It ALL feels so wrong to me. But on the plus side, I am quite comfortable.

Jenni NZ, if we all saw the same things, wouldn’t life be boring? Your comment definitely made me look at them again, and it is very good to hear how others might see something I’m wearing/doing, because I’m often not aware. I appreciate that you broke it down to a continuum from more dressy to “tramping”, explaining how you saw the elements of each pair, so I could see what you meant.

Excuse me if I’ve told this story on here here before. I may have. YLF reminds me of it frequently, when two people post very different outfits using the same item, or when Angie wears one of her picks (because she always wears things differently than I envision wearing them when I just see the hanger photo).

A guy I was dating who was into fashion was completely nonplussed when I received a skirt I’d ordered. I pushed him for a response and got “I don’t like that kind of thing”. So when I wore it and he flipped out telling me how great I looked, I called him out: “But you don’t like the skirt”. He said “I didn’t know you were going to wear it like that“.

I wonder if I’d be able to wear even the ones that look like hiking boots to you in a way that looked elegant and sassy overall, so you’d say “I didn’t know you were going to wear them like that” and like the look. I read your comment as a fun challenge, even though I doubt you meant it like that.

ETA If the flat floral ankle boots (I can't get over the dual meaning of "booty"!) don't work out, I think I'll go for either of these. One of them is new; the other one you put in a category adjacent to the Seychelles.

I stand by my own distinction of some of those boots in the other thread looking like tramping in the woods! As opposed to the glamour of the floral metallic ones in this thread. I think it has to be a Myers-Briggs difference between us as in Roxanna's thread if you thought they were similar

I just remembered one other pair of light colored shoes in my closet, purchased at the same time and place as the loafers, never worn yet. They can probably do anything the loafers can. Maybe I should start working them in, to try to feel the difference between light and dark color/high and low contrast in my outfits.

If I do go looking for metallic flats in March, I think I’ll stick to closed toe and back, probably not even d’orsay, at least until I figure out if we are moving and where to. In a big city where I was using public transit and my bike to get around, I don’t think I’d want sandals—too much dirt! Something that looked lacy or strappy and sandalian but secretly had a closed footbed, like these (but without the pointy toe) might be good

Hah yes I do have the "keep light things clean" super power (somehow). And while light shoes are a signature of mine I definitely understand how they're not for everyone! (They seem to be for less people than more people ><) Regarding feeling the seasons I think starting from that arcane rules place is actually a good idea while you're still feeling things out. Gotta know the rules to break them and starting from a place of familiarity helps with perspective especially early on. Luckily (?) there are many forum members who battle feeling "wintery" in places with warmer winter climates and I'm sure there will be opportunities to discuss that as the season goes along.

(And I hope you're able to get the cool boots and incorporate right away )

rich color, texture, maximal details, and actually a fairly refined overall look with a little dark glamor.
Yes! So much better than I can say it myself (see how I stumbled around in that thread trying to explain to Jenn NZ how I saw any commonality between those boots, lol), but I can recognize that your phrasing sounds just like what I want, Aida.

Thanks for explaining about dark-colored metallics. I know you wear light-colored shoes year round and look great in them. But I think I will hold off because I'm trying to "feel" the seasons more by dressing to them, even if that means holding to arcane rules, and because my look in general is not as glam/elegant as yours*. So I will let these go, then revisit the issue when the calendar says it's spring, by trying the white loafers, etc for a while. Thanks to you and La Belle Demimondaine for that suggestion!

This sounds a little silly, but I'm glad we are on the same page now. I had never thought of fashion as a thing that could be broken down analytically before YLF, and you are really good at it, so when we were running in skew directions, I wondered if I was making an error in logic that I didn't see. But Jenn had commented way upthread that she thinks the boots fit me, and she's good with the logic too, and knows my style, as evidenced by that comment & others.

   .

.

*I don't want to look like I'm tramping in the woods (NZ's impression of some of the boots), but do like to be "rough & ready", whether that's my son yelling "Mom think fast!" and firing something my way that I catch, or coming across two women in a parking garage, one with battery cables, one with a dead battery, and me being the only one who knows how to put them together. I have a feeling you can do that too, and keep your light-colored pants/shoes clean, but I hope you get what I mean about the image.

Hm I think perhaps this conversation, somewhat inadvertently, is actually talking about two different things, myself included. I do still think that flatter, funkier light metallic shoes could be a fun option for you but NOT in the place of the booties you later brought up; I meant in place of the gold pumps. So my metallic examples were more in line with those, and the effect that they would have in an outfit (and the finds I included were my own shoes, not necessarily shoes I would suggest for you specifically).

I'm glad you left your ramble in! Specifically this line: I think it is the “texture” part of that boot’s effect that appeals to me, more than the “glamor” aspect. To me this is a very important distinction. I did go back and look through the boots, and they seem in line with this line of thought. However the vibe I get from them is more a bohemian feel -- rich color, texture, maximal details, and actually a fairly refined overall look with a little dark glamor.

Do dark metallic shoes work like dark shoes, or does the metallic make them work light? They will work like dark shoes because they are dark. Just a little less severe then, say, solid black, because the metallic sheen lightens the boot a little. Not enough to be low contrast, though.

So! I will change my recommendation a bit :)

Re the boots: I think they will be a very good fit for you, kind of like a boot version of the new loafers you've been wearing a lot. Short ankle boots are great for FL winters and based on the pieces you've listed I think should work quite nicely. They will NOT behave like a light metallic shoe and I don't see any overlap in function there. As I said above, they should work anywhere your loafers do when you want a more boot-y look (and could be particularly fun with shorts/capris/dresses if that's a look you like).

Re the gold loafers: I vote hold off for now and experiment with the light shoes you have to see if you even like the "nude shoe" look. You may find that you don't feel the need to lighten up a look and that's just fine! If you find that down the line you are still thinking about them, however, then revisit the idea and look at what specifically is the appeal; I don't see this particular pair as quite in line with what I've seen from your style. Of the four light colored shoes you linked I think #2 and #3 look like they should work well for you along with the boho sandals.

LBD, thank you for encouraging/reminding me to stick with what makes my heart sing!

I apologize if I drone on too long about wanting a fall wardrobe. I say that at the beginning of most WiW/planning posts to remind people of the context. Sounds like I’ve been at it long enough that people already know.

Growing up in Florida, I’m sure you recognized that there are seasons here, and had an occasional giggle at the tourists who thought it was “hot” in November, and that it was summer year round. That’s me. I’m only now making the transition from “hot & less hot” to recognizing seasons here. (like the season of "liquid sunshine" haha) That’s why, when you read my first post about it, you thought we were just moving here. My body has been here a while; some other faculties are just checking in /catching up, which is why I’m just now putting together seasonally appropriate clothes.

fashiontern, ha, I don't think I've ever thought of myself as much of a darling but I did grow up, in part, South of the Mason-Dixon line so if the shoe fits (pun intended)...

Ok, some thoughts. They are not very linear, sorry about that.

I do think that metallic flats/loafers would work great with the skinnies outfit that you posted yesterday. For example the gold loafers that are the first find in Aida's post. You could just swap those in and change nothing else and it would just bring a little bit of lightness/lift to the outfit.

To be clear, I don't think there was anything wrong with the outfit you posted yesterday -- it's just another option; sometimes you might be in the mood for a dark shoe, sometimes a lighter shoe.

In fact, Aida's metallic loafers could probably sub in for your dark patterned loafers in almost any outfit. I get that you are very happy wearing the dark loafers so I am not trying to talk you out of those! But, if those have become a workhorse for you it may be useful to duplicate the style in a different colorway. (I actually had to click through both your find and Aida's to see that they weren't actually the same shoe -- the shapes look VERY similar to my eye!)

If you wanted to try out the look I think the loafer in your 3rd picture above might give the closest approximation. I do think a metallic adds a bit more zing than a matte light shoe, and looks more current.

I hear what you are saying about wanting to toughen up the look. A metallic flat/loafer does often lend a "pretty" element to an outfit. (What's interesting to me is that the block-heel loafers that you started this thread with read as very "ladylike" to me, so it might be worth thinking more about what appealed to you about them.) Maybe a darker metallic like copper, or some stud detailing, would have that effect.

Would metallic loafers look *better* than the metallic boots in your skinnies outfit? I don't know. I think the boots would probably work just fine. I am not sure about their appropriateness for your current climate. BUT, my climate is very different, and I am having a bit of trouble shifting my thinking from how I wear ankle boots in my climate to how you might do so in yours. (Like genuinely, I am realizing: Oh, my assumptions about when/how one wears ankle boots may not be appropriate here.)

I do worry that we are talking you out of something that makes your heart sing (the metallic booties) and talking you in to something that you never wanted in the first place (metallic flats/loafers) which doesn't sit great with me.

How exciting that your longed-for move may actually be on the horizon!

Here are my thoughts: you've talked so much about wanting a 'fall' wardrobe. Loafers always seemed like a back-to-school fall shoe for me, growing up in Florida. I really think those shoes could fit the bill for you, if and only if...

1) You can wear a heel that height, comfortably.
2) The shoe itself fits the Florida weather and the sudden liquid sunshine downpours.
3) If they make your heart sing, when you look at them.

What I don't think you should do, is to 'settle' or 'make-do' with a different shoe. They should make your heart sing equally.

I also think you already have some really cute shoes there, and I think you should rotate them as a style challenge for yourself.

Cindy, you’re getting out of the trailer—hooray!

These shoes were a whimsical “should I?” Just because of the price. When I look at my needs, flat boots are what I think, as per the dozen or so in my finds. Even the Frank Sarto and Jessica Alba brocades are probably too high. One of the pairs of dark boots I’m thinking of happens to be metallic. (((((Do dark metallic shoes work like dark shoes, or does the metallic make them work light?))))). Getting them might sate my desire for metallic. I do not need to let the metallic whim lead the show.

Metallica are neutrals in my book, so it's never hard for me to find a reason to buy more of them LOL

Possibly related: I need to stop the shopping mania too. I've gone a bit crazy this Christmas, and also with some purchases for myself. My logic has been: well, the credit card bills for Christmas are going to be ugly anyway, so a little more won't hurt.

Normally, there would be no credit card bill for Christmas, but we're building a house :-/

Brooklyn, I really do have to start paying better attention to detail! I could have sworn that you wear boots a lot.

I’m leaving up my long rambly post to Aida last night, simply because if people have read something, then i think it’s rude to dissappear it.

I’m amused at myself because I think I’ve rotated pretty much 180 degrees since starting this thread.

If metallic shoes function as light-skinned color shoes, then I should probably pass and wear some of the light-colored shoes I already own. I thought the shoes in this find were going to be my daily go-tos, but since I started wearing the shoes I posted in the find earlier, I don’t think I’ve touched them. Also, I have several pairs of light-colored shoes that I’m not wearing. So as much as I like the silver shoes Aida posted and the gold ones I started the conversation with, if they are going to work like what’s in my closet, then I think I just argued my way out of them.

If you’re saying that dark metallic shoes work the same way, then I guess I don’t get the boots either. Sad face

With your climate I think a metallic flat or sandal would be a better investment than a metallic boot. (Much as I hate to say it, because I love those gold floral boots). I think we have similar climates. I’ve had red floral boots for 2 winters now and they are still barely worn, even though I like them (probably around 15 wears). On the other hand, I have some rose gold sandals I got last year that are already looking a bit second hand this summer because I have worn them so much. Also, my floral boots (similar to the gold floral boots you are considering) are more of a statement shoe while a metallic summer shoe functions more as a nude (as Aida says). So that is another reason why a metallic flat or sandal would get more wear than metallic boots. But I do love those boots (did I mention that already?)

Aida, I think you and I were posting at the same time, so I didn’t see your latest reply right away.

I think it is the “texture” part of that boot’s effect that appeals to me, more than the “glamor” aspect. Did you happen to see my post about all the boots I liked, or the boots in my finds? Those all just appealed to me viscerally. I think (and would like to hear if you agree) that most of them combine RATE and some kind of elegance and have some sort of texture appeal going on, but most are not metallic.

I can see how light colored shiny shoes and light colored skin are low contrast. I think you wear a lot of light-colored bottoms, so there would also be little contrast between pants and shoe your outfits. If I wear them with pants (most of mine are darker, and there is a very big jump from my full-length pants to the next-shortest length, probably my capris. I’m more likely to have a knee-length skirt than cropped pants), then of course the contrast shifts, and with shorts we’re back to skin /shoe contrast mattering more than bottoms/shoe.

I know I don’t want a heel. I think the heel is what prevents me from reaching for the one pair of boots in my challenge, as much as I like them, and most of my boots already have heels. The ones I wore into the ground did not.

My feeling that a boot looks less river barge-like than many flats (especially if the flats have low vamps) is harder to figure out. In terms of square inches of leather, there is a lot more boot than flat. Maybe the reason it “feels” less obnoxious is that the shank takes up some of the room at the top of my foot. Or it could be that having that right angle visually cuts the foot in two, whereas a loafer or pump just keeps going. I haven’t thought about this before.

Some of the shoes you linked to appeal to me for me, but I still can’t see where I’d wear them. I think I’d want to toughen them up. That would likely involve dark colors, so would be high contrast with the light colored metallics. Thinking through actual things I’ve worn over the last month, they’d probably work with jeans, the suede jacket, and a dark colored shirt, but not with the brown skinnies I wore today—wrong shape. They might be fun with those floral shorts. I haven’t figured out what to wear them with. Maybe a black vest with a cranberry or plum shirt would work. The silver ones appeal to me most, but the things I see wearing them with aren’t things that work now.

Looking at the photos you posted, I see eight out of the twelve looks are indeed light pants/low contrast with the shoes.

Must tend to Teen now. Will try to edit/shorten tomorrow.

SarahD8, on the 15th, I’m planning to set this capsule aside and start a new one. With all the uncertainty about my shape and location, I think counting up items that I’m actually wearing now is the best way to judge the fit of something with my wardrobe. They fit with half of this capsule; I’ll count what they’d work with in that one too.

Btw, I’ve recently received some news that makes it more likely that we will return to 4 seasons land in half a year.

I applaud your daughter for not wanting to be made into a diminutive. Your use “darling “ came off in just the right way, so much that I now want to interpret the “D” in your name as “Darling”.

Hah by all means feel free to disagree with me! There are a couple of ways that metallic shoes can be useful. The most common thought behind wearing metallic footwear is that it adds a little extra shine to an outfit which adds interest and subtle glam. They can also add texture depending on fabrication, especially if they have a pattern like the boots you're looking at. Generally have a more glitzy feel than, say, a patent colorful shoe.

For me personally I use mine as a glam alternative to a more classic "nude shoe" which works well because of my very pale skin; as counter-intuitive as it may sound, my metallic shoes (gold loafers, sparkly blush flats, silver strappy pumps) are what I wear when I don't want to attract attention to my feet but need to add some extra glam to a look, particularly in the summer when it's tougher to get enough visual interest. Key here is that they are light metallics (versus, say, a dark pewter) and I have very pale skin.

A metallic flat will have a lower visual impact than a metallic boot; and the taller the boot, the bigger the impact. And of course you don't have to go super duper flat! Even a 1" heel or wedge would give enough visual foot shortening to counter the shine. But remember: Most people just see "feet" :)

Some outfit examples because visuals always help.

EDIT: In regards to the loafers you linked, a metallic shoe would likely be lighter, i.e. lower contrast, which would draw the eye less than a darker, i.e. higher contrast, shoe would against bare skin.

Aida, i don’t believe I’ve ever had the temerity to disagree with you. Your analysis takes into consideration things I didn’t even know were things.

When I just read your comment, though, I nodded along and started reviewing which of the things in the challenge I could wear the boots with. So far I’ve worn 2 pr shorts, 1 capris, 2 pants, and 2 dresses. They’d go with one or maybe both pairs of shorts and both pairs of pants, so 3.5/7. Jackets aren’t much of a thing here, but for what it’s worth, I could wear them with the suede jacket, pink puffer vest, and the plaid jacket that’s on its way to me.

Then I came to your recommendation that I get metallic flats and start wearing them right now, and the skidding-to-a-stop sound in my brain was like nails on a chalkboard. Part of that, I think, is because I can’t picture metallic flats that would be appealing on my feet. Flat shoes make feet look bigger, at least mine in my own eyes. If I had some, they’d go with everything, but when I try to think of wearing them out, I just balk. Maybe I need to try some on. If I had them, we could be jacket-and-shoe twins ;)

On the third hand, the loafers I’ve worn so many times this month were an experiment in flash. (I know, I know, they are pretty low key for “flashy”). I’ve taken to them much more easily than I expected. It turns out they go with everything, I’m happy putting them on every day (more than the booties, which I thought I’d <3 love <3 ), and I’ve gotten a couple compliments on them (probably de rigour for many of you here, but is rare in my world, and I’m certainly not accustomed to compliments on my footwear). I’ve worn them with two of those toppers, and would wear them with that jacket too, leaving you forlorn and untwinned.

Metallic flats (once I got over myself & wore them) would probably be as versatile and useful as these flats. Can you explain to me again what the point would be, since I have these?

I will be very practical here: If you have enough weather to wear those metallic boots AND enough pieces to wear the with now then they would be worth stalking. Otherwise you may be better off getting metallic flats (such as loafers, or smoking slippers, or the like) which you could immediately incorporate if metallic footwear makes your heart sing. Personally I find metallic flats more versatile and wearable; my gold smoking slippers are probably my most worn footwear. And there will always be pretty boots out there :)

Well, your outfit today definitely confirms my suspicion that metallic flat loafers/moccasins would work well in your wardrobe! (Those pants are great on you btw.)

But it sounds like the booties are really making your heart sing. I think they would work well with the outfit you have on today. As Jenn says, it's all about whether you have enough closed-to weather to really enjoy them. I agree with you that they could work with both casual and dressier pants, as well as casual dresses and skirts. But I'd encourage you to think about WHICH pants, dresses, and skirts that are CURRENTLY in your wardrobe -- and specifically what outfits you'd put together using those items for the weather you're likely to encounter. That way, when the price goes down, you'll be ready to pounce with confidence.

Jenn, I like those too. Oh no!
But thanks for commenting on the pair I’m seriously considering. I haven’t been wearing the booties with the 2” heels, but have been wearing closed-toe shoes for a month now. I think you have a good feeling for my emerging style, so am weighing your comment heavily.

In other news of the day, it looks as if we will have an insurance deductible to pay, so jumping at the boots now before the price comes down is not an option.

I like the boots! I got a pair of boots with gold toe caps a couple years ago, have worn them 100+ times, and am about to take them in for re-heeling so I can wear them 100 more. They definitely add a little something "extra" to ordinary outfits. I think that subtle floral and low heel would fit in well with your current lifestyle, provided you have enough closed-shoe weather that you feel like you'd actually be able to wear them.

As a friend claims to tell his wife frequently, $0.00 beats any price out there.

Now, the ideal would be the booties at the pumps price ;)

I don’t think that’s going to happen. The Rack has Seychelles sometimes, but plenty of models don’t ever get there. Lots of other stores that have this style don’t have the bronze brocade at all. I think that as soon as Nordy’s drops the price by 30%, I need to pounce—if I’m going to get them at all.
