I had mine done by John Kitchener and unfortunately it seemed as though he was basically telling me that I could wear just about any colour under the sun, except to keep black for below the waist. I had wanted to get this done in order to help me reduce my wardrobe, but it really didn't help AT ALL, and frankly, a few of the colours he said I can definitely wear, I think make me look ill. Also, he seems to think my eyes are green, whereas actually, in most lights, they are some form of pale blue. I wondered if his surprising assessment of my eye colour might have been caused by the fact that the office room he was doing the analysis in had two large windows one on each side of the room, and outside those windows were very green trees. No idea, but nobody else has ever called my eyes green before. I hope you have better luck!

I have found color analysis to be extremely helpful for me - in real life, not on the computer - and many of my friends have also found it to be helpfull. However, if it doesn't appeal to you - why bother? Just go with what brings you joy.

I think that color analysis can be tremendously useful, if it's done in a logical way. If not, it can be really unhelpful.
Back in the 80s, my mother and I were analysed under the 4 seasons system, both as winter. This kind of worked for mum, but I could never get it to work really well. I just thought I was quite a colourless person, flat ashy hair and grey-green eyes, often looking tired or drained. Whenever I went to cosmetics counters they agreed I had a cool undertone and gave me grey and berry pinks as safe options.
Then I hit 40 and looked at my black, white and grey wardrobe and felt so bored. So I went to a sci-art analyst. What a revelation, she analysed me as light spring! And for the first time, I understood just how bad dark, autumn warm and cool colors were on me; light spring is a very intolerant coloring! That first analysis had actually prevented me from trying what I now know are my best colors.
I no longer look colourless, and in fact in my best colors, I glow (they bring out the gold in my hair and pale yellow in my eyes). I no longer look tired or drained. And I now have white teeth. I kid you not, in the wrong colors my teeth look light yellowy; in the right lipstick, they look white!

Dixie, you are absolutely stunning and it seems to me you have a good handle on what works for you. Black is gorgeous on you - it actually brings out your features and gives you a sparkle, which is rare and I am jealous! Don't you dare stop wearing black!! I agree with the opinions that the jewel tones would also look amazing on you, and it sounds like they would work with your style and preferences too. A rich ruby, emerald, or sapphire would look amazing, I think. If I had to choose a season for you, I would definitely say winter - deep, or possibly even clear, given your sparkly eyes.

I too have been sucked multiple times down this particular rabbit-hole ... it's fun, but I agree, I'm not sure what it buys you in the end. I've been analyzed as a cool summer, a soft summer (deep version), a clear spring and just a plain winter. It does help to a degree - for example, I am definitely cool-toned and look terrible in colors such as orange (but then again, I don't prefer most people in orange - so perhaps it's just because I don't really like orange??). I will never, ever stop wearing black, even if I "shouldn't". I think it's more art than science, and only useful insofar as you are having fun with it.

Enjoy the exploration!

I had my colors don back in the 80's when they used only 4 colors. Now 12 or 16 colors are mostly used. This can be helpful because there are more colors to choose from. I also tried the online analysis and found I got different answers from different sites. I finally got draped by a 12 Blueprints analyst. This system made the most sense to me because they cover your hair and you and the analyst wear grey smocks so you can see how the various colors reflect in you skin and eyes. I was analyzed as a dark winter which made perfect sense to me as I gravitated toward these colors anyway. It is also helpful when choosing makeup. It is a very interesting journey, enjoy it.

I had my colors *done* back in the '80s when it was all the range. A friend with similar coloring had hers done at the same place so it was interesting to compare afterwards. At that time, my hair was brownish black and her hair was closer to a bluish black. Thus, I was told I could wear flat black, and she was told she could wear deep black and a lot of cooler blues and purples than I can. We are both of East Asian descent and aren't particularly fair so probably have gold undertones -- not really yellow but not terribly olive either.

I generally have and had a decent sense of what colors flatter me, but it's the more subtle neutrals that tend to stump me and led me to the color analysis. I wanted to know which beiges work for me since most do not. I also took in my husband to have his colors done since his coloring is so different from mine. He wouldn't have a shred of clothing to his name if I didn't shop for him, but I would be at a loss if I didn't have this aid since he doesn't have the shopping patience to try on more than a few items at a time.

My husband's was done by John Kitchener at Personal Style Counselors, and apparently he is still in the same business after 30 years, and mine was by a colleague of his at PSC. They also divided colors into Dramatics, Understated, Neutrals, Reds, and Eye Colors -- for a particular individual. It helped to learn that certain jewel colors are neutrals on me, which means that I can wear them but they don't provide a lot of energy which is why a solid burgundy or deep emerald dress would be oddly *off* on me.

Color analysis worked for me, but I think I was lucky.

oldchic, Thank you. You're so sweet! I see you sport red lipstick too... Red lipstick gals united!

Diane G, thank you! I kind of agree with that chart. I feel that a lot of my best colors are missing, like reds, turquoise, some purples, etc., mustard instead of golden yellow (which is unflattering), and some of those muted colors are kind of meh on me. Also, see, here's a chart of winter celebrities https://www.pinterest.com/pin/3518505931230195/... And there's Penelope. Kim Kardashian usually appears in both too.

So, again, it appears that each author has a different idea... If I'm going to have to analyse and decide which colors of each palette that they gave you works and which don't, till the point that I have do make my own new chart, then I don't see the point of color seasons. It's less complicated to follow your gut. I appreciate your help but I'm done! Hahaha...

It's an interesting topic, though, we can keep talking about how language forms our perception or if you see the dress blue or gold...

Staysfit, Four different categories! Imagine... But you seem like a mix of soft summer and soft autumn! Maybe that happens when you have features of both seasons. I just quit from the color seasons a few lines ago, but the practicality of having a defined color palette sounds tempting. Maybe I'm not 100% content with the color palettes that I find online but at least with this exercise I'm defining even more my personal palette, which would be useful, I hope, specially for online shopping (because you can't try on stuff). And thanks for your compliments! I have fun with my looks

Isn't it fascinating? I wonder if it was the Radiolab I heard - but that seems to be the tribe! In what I read/heard - the link article touches on it a little - it's more than that they have a harder time. Most can't see the difference, can't 'find the one that's different' when it's blue, and those who feel they can - they make mistakes, take a long time. Which is really interesting because with all the words for green (which subsumes blue), most easily spot the one that's different when it's green.

ETA: After walking around the block with Lilypup, I think maybe I've pinpointed something that has bothered me about the discussion of colour perception and this tribe... since green is ostensibly made by mixing blue and yellow, why have 'we' translated their colour category as green? Wouldn't it be more 'accurate' to consider green as in the blue category as opposed to the other way 'round?

Dixie, I look absolutely awful in black. Like a corpse. I try not to wear it and have pretty much banned it from my wardrobe except for some of my shoes. I am waiting for them to wear out and I will not replace them. If you go through my past posts you may find one about wearing black.

I have definitely had my colors done. Four times. I was categorized differently each time! The first I was told I was a Spring but it was my mother, so it may not count. The second time I was categorized as a summer. The third an Autumn. The fourth a soft Autumn. More recently a Light Summer. I trust the second and last analyses the most because the qualifications of the people doing them were the best. I was draped and in natural lighting. Hair color had nothing to do with the categorization, but my skin is fairly neutral which may be why my various analyses have been so different.

I am finding the use of a well defined color palette very helpful in building a wardrobe with mixable pieces. I have found that by sticking closely to the colors, I can quickly and easily put together outfits. I need fewer items in my closet, and I am very happy with the results.

I would not recommend online analysis. Monitors and pictures are not accurate, especially if your skin may be close to neutral. Also, it is so important to see what happens with both your skin and eyes with various colors and to do the comparisons. Then it becomes very clear. I could truly see that the cool shades of light summer were better than the warm of light spring. Neither were awful, just one was definitely better.

You have beautiful eyes, skin and hair. Why not figure out how best to highlight these wonderful features? IMO it's well worth it.

Adding on --- different color charts will also include some different colors for the same seasonal sub-category, so like Diane says, it's worth doing a bit of googling. Also the sub-categories -- deep, clear, soft etc. vary quite a bit. I don't know which of two I fit in, so I pick and choose colors. (eta:I think I just figured this out, thanks for your thread!)

With red --- there is a tomato-y bright red, and a blood (blue undertones) bright red, and neutral reds so it's likely that at least one would work. You might find that an orangey-red or deep orange makes your cheeks glow though, versus a bluer red.

ETA: If you look good in cream, that points to me to you being able to wear warmer colors too. Brown is a huge category so not that meaningful, and I can see that black should work on a deep autumn. I bet you look good in cognac leather (like your bag in the picture). This is a warm brown that doesn't look good next to my (pale winter) skin.

Also yeah, that link example was just a warm/cool thing -- your coloring is deep (Autumn or Winter) probably so that would make the pastels and mid-tones less of a good fit I would guess.

Rabbit, I did the test.

Check your veins: I can’t tell the predominant color (1 is with natural lighting and 2 with fluorescent lighting).

I think I look the best in “rusty” silver or gold, not pure, bright silver/gold.

I look best in black and cream over bright white and brown.

I’m warm toned considering that I have brown hair with red undertones and brown eyes.

I burn a little and then tan.

Celeb crush: Audrey Tautou

I don’t love any of the color examples but I would wear the fourth and fifth row of both group of colors. Like someone said, there are warm and cool tones of every color so I don’t agree with those examples that say blue=cool, yellow=warm.

I would consider myself warm/neutral in the scale. Warm, but not the warmest of warms, if that makes sense?

In conclusion, I think with me it’s more about the intensity of the colors. I wouldn’t wear an item of the first three rows of both groups. I have a high contrast and strong features, so I think that’s what suits me the best. More muted/less saturated/lighter items would suit someone with those characteristics. Now, about my personal style, I tend to go for prints over solid colors.

Rachylou, I think I read the same article that you’re talking about, it’s not that they can’t see blue, but they have a harder time than us to tell the difference, they also had a lot of words to describe green, so they can tell the difference between different shades better than us. Language forms our perception. I love that topic! Here’s the link, if anyone wants to read the article:

http://www.businessinsider.com.....lor-2015-2

So I pulled up an example from Pinterest and lo and behold, black is included https://www.pinterest.com/pin/89016530107715598/ do any of the shades resonate with you?

I think it goes without saying that some colors are more flattering on different skin, color types than others. but at the same time, color happiness is also important. some colors just make me happy, even if they aren't my best colors you know?

I agree with, Janet. Colour theory (esp. the terminology) can be confusing or enlightening. I find it helpful in many ways, would enjoy having my colours done, but am not sure how well I put it to work.

Undertones play a big role for sure, also/therefore, how the colours are manufactured matters. You could have a black dye created from blues or browns, etc. etc.

Your eyesight and brainsight matter. I have a decently trained eye, but I did a little online test and apparently I don't see as well in the blue range as in others... i.e., I see different blues but there are a variety of them I see as the same blue. Interesting to me factoid - there's an ethnic group of people out there that uses the same word for 'blue' as 'green.' These folk cannot tell the difference between blues and greens. Their minds don't bother to make any distinctions at all and thus they do not even perceive them.

Lighting matters. The colours next to other colours matter.

... in other words, a lot can change the sitch from the model example.

I think it's a useful jumping off point for sure. Then again if I was in a hard to categorize season, it might be more confusing than not. The most clear cut warm/cool division I've seen is the gold or silver jewelry test, and the hot pink or orange test. This is pretty good: http://stylecaster.com/cool-warm-skin-undertones/

Since you are likely going to be either deep autumn or winter you could look at both palettes and see which contains most of the colors that you know look good on you. If you are a true neutral, pick and choose between both maybe.

Although I think it's great for jumping off I think it's just a starting point, because our skin changes with the seasons (I'm pale with cool skin and with dark hair -- a winter -- but I can get freckles and red highlights). Especially if you dye or highlight your hair with warm tones that can change how things read.

I think the most useful thing to figure out is which are your best neutrals, the ones that if you wore an outfit of just that color you would look smashing, and what are the best 3-5 pigments on you (again, if you wore a mass of this color you would look alive and vibrant). That gives you the bones of making sure your wardrobe is cohesive and working. Also knowing your sickly death colors is good, because makeup would have to do serious lifting to compensate for them, and it's probably not worth the effort.

Also photos will often skew the light warmer or cooler so that can throw off indoor photos a lot, the best judge is a mirror or photo in noon overcast (to avoid glare) daylight I think.

Thank you, Angie!

Janet, so far I haven't found the color theory helpulf. I think we all are intuitive. Our eyes are our best guide. You have to be color blind to not realize that some color looks BAD on you, I think. I have strong opinions about colors too. But those categories... That's what I have a problem with, that's why I get confused. First, they're not standarized, every author has a different concept, examples and color palettes. And because it's not a perfect system, I'm thinking that for some people you can have a mix of two seasons, like in the body shapes classifications. Yeah, I would be happier with a more personalized system.

The time in my life when I wore more unflattering colors was on my early childhood, because some of my clothes were gifts or I didn't have a lot of saying on it. Those colors were pastels. Yes, people think that they're girly and cute so that's what I got, even If they looked awful on me.

Anyway, even if I didn't know those rules that Angie shared with me, for example, I made work some not so flattering colors by wearing a really flattering color on my face -like true red or dark wine. That way my features don't get lost. I think I've been practicing all that advice intuitively.

And yes, you come off as a true winter! A clear winter, maybe?

I think color analysis is like a lot of these other tools for helping determine one's style -- it can confuse or enlighten, depending on how seriously you want to take it, and how firmly you land in one category or another. I think those of us who are not so easily categorized may feel more frustration with the concept.

I can't get that wrapped up in it, personally. I know what I like, and I have strong emotional and visual reactions to certain colors, especially when it comes to how they look on me. Orange, for example, is a really happy color and I love it, but not to wear on a regular basis (I make the exception for Orioles gear ;-). Sour colors like citron or lime are awful on me, and even though I like them in an abstract way -- on other people -- I actually recoil when I see them in a store.

I think I'm a winter, whatever that means. Fair skin with cool red undertones, dark hair (that can go reddish in the sun), freckles, blue-green eyes. I put on vibrant cobalt blue and I look great; I put on a dull tan and look like death. I've been aware of this since I was a teenager. I think most of us have some sort of instincts as to what colors look good on us and reflect something of our personalities. I say if you enjoy a color and it makes you feel happy to wear it, that's the best indicator of all.

Kirstjen, pure wisdom! Thank you! The cool and warm tones of the same color explains why we can pull off a lot of colors. I think almost nobody wears strictly warm or cool colors (in the sense of red vs. blue).

Cheryle, when I say "olive" I mean a green (some consider it neutral) undertone instead of yellow. Although I do have some yellow on my skin.

DianeG and Bettycrocker, thanks for the website!

Sheila, I'm starting to think black is definately overused. I would love to see an example of someone that looks bad in black, because I can't picture it. Everyone wears black.

Gennifyr, I feel like we have a similar case! I've been adding light blue to my closet too! Hahaha... And surprisingly, it looks good. I'm going to check out that ebook, thank you!

Olivegreen, I just googled what jewel tones mean and I think you're right! They seem fun and interesting, since I want to add color to my wardrobe. What do you mean by mid-tone? A muted jewel tone? I think it's easier to say what has looked bad. I think muted colors don't do me any favours and the worst color that I could wear is a pale yellow.

Well, first impressions, jewel tones would probably look great on you. Clear true reds and blues and purples, cobalt. You might be classified a winter?
And not warm, but cool undertones?
Down to mid tones of those colours as your neutrals?
Monitors are not good for analysis, but that is what springs to mind.
What has looked good on you in the past?

I think it works well for some people and is confusing for others, like me.

My mom is a pale redhead with Welsh ancestry. My dad is dark haired Italian. I have dark brown hair, almost black with a ton of red highlights. I don't know what colour my eyes are, some say brown some amber/hazel. My skin used to be very pale but now has a distinct yellow tinge. An Indian friend once said I had "Asian skin".

The colour analysis puts me in Deep Autumn but a lot of those colours look horrible on me. I tend to wear winter colours, black and white is obviously my thing and I think they good on me. I read an ebook on Dressing Your Truth which put me in category 4 which are winter colours.

I normally shy away from pastels but have been adding pale blue to my closet. My blue shorts make my legs look very tan.

So yeah, it can be confusing and not entirely accurate but like someone else said, it's a good starting point for colour theory. At the end of the day, the best way to figure out your colours is to try them on!

I see that a lot of you know about this topic so I'm going to give this a shot!

Olive skin, brown eyes, natural dark brown hair (almost black, like pic 8), high contrast.

Classified as autumn but doubtful about the color seasons. I like black and red, and intense, dark colors, in general. Muted colors are the least of my liking. I want to try new things, though.

In some pictures I'm more tanned. I show you some photos of me with other people so you can compare my undertone.

1. Wearing black.
2. I look green compared to all my spanish friends, that have more of a pink undertone.
4. Now, next to my friend I look more neutral and he looks greener.
5. No-makeup close up photo.
6. No makeup but red lipstick, which instantly gives my face a glow.
Etc.

9. We all have a similar skin tone, slightly different undertones.

I was incorrectly labeled a Summer when I had a color analysis years ago. The Summer colors made me look ill, so that color pallete was soon abandoned. I then read some books and experimented with colors until
I found what works: Soft Autumn. Christine Scaman's website was the most helpful of all. She knows her stuff and explains things in a way that's easy to understand.

I believe there is a value in color analysis- there is tons of info on Christine Scaman's website 12blueprints.com also Rachel Nachmias has bestdressed us ? which is also good.

I saw Christine personally and she gave me valuable makeup advice....and changed my perception on color.

I think in my fifties I began to change my makeup to all neutrals and warm tones for some reason. She showed me why much of what I was doing and using was not good for me. I had thought I was a spring but I was draped as a bright winter. Those colors and that level of contrast was completely foreign to me... but I adopted it... and over time I realized she probably was right.

As far as black.. I can wear it, in contrast with other thing things... like a zebra print , but not really on it's own and not a lot around my face. I find black is overused, in winterwear, footwear and evening wear. I can wear shiny black easier than matte black... - like stones in a necklace.

I have seen a number of online assessments and they are close but not quite there.

I had professional colour analysis done and for me it was helpful. But it's obviously not everyone's cup of tea. I find that it helps me with clothing choices. I've always had an artistic eye and so I 'get' what is being achieved. Not everyone can relate and that's fine. You do what pleases you. It's 'horses for courses' as Angie would say. It's all good.

BTW I'm a Soft Autumn and they say black is not a good colour for me. I do agree wholeheartedly that I hate to see myself in black next to my face. Even with great make up on, black drains me of any colour and I look ill. However I do wear black on my lower half from time to time

Perhaps the online assessments were not accurate due to the picture lighting and monitor variations. My understanding was that most people with olive undertones are winter or summer as the warmer colors emphasize the yellow undertone of the skin. I could be way out to lunch though.

I do think color analysis has some value. Some of us love certain colors that don't love us back and the color analysis can help in making conscious decisions to go with what you love as opposed to what is most flattering.
