Love the jeans on you. My teenage DD just begged me for a pair of "Mom jeans" from Urban Outfitters. They are adorable on her -and I didn't tell her they look remarkably like a pair from around 1999 that I finally donated last year. At least my 20 year old shorter tops are coming back around again with these new-fangled high rises. Never throw anything away.......

LisaP, approprio, shevia, Gigi, Laurie, RobinF, Suz, ClaraT -- thank you all so much for the lovely compliments (on the jeans and the hair!)

LisaP, it's true that I've sized up so much with my mom jeans that they look more like boyfriend jeans -- especially since I'll only wear them rolled. But if I roll them, they look just like those jeans my mom wore in the 90s (when I made fun of her, lol).

approprio, that comic is hilarious! That's very much what my art school is like. (I go to Emily Carr; they don't "do" technical instruction -- i.e. learning technique/perspective/etc. As illustrators, we kind of have to teach ourselves those things -- but other than that, I'd say I've received a good education. But the illustration dept is a lot less fine-arty than the rest of the school). I recognize all those tropes -- not sure which one you are (but pretty sure it's not the one who just wants to get some tail!). And yes, do a post on art school style! Out here they are mostly wearing high rise jeans with frayed or rolled hems, short flat boots, and loose shortish tops. And there's plenty of piercings and rainbow hair.

Suz, they are J. Crew, but I don't know what the style is. I cut the tag off without even looking at it. They were super-cheap compared to their original price, though (about a third of the original price) so I imagine they are a older style. I rarely shop J Crew so I can't help you more! As for size: I got a 27, which is my actual waist measurement (or it might even be 28 these days), and even so they are loose at my waist. I'm usually a 25 or 26 in lower-rise jeans, because of my narrow hips and small butt.

Clara, I agree that higher rises make your legs look longer -- this is why the style is better for cropped or rolled jeans.

I have one pair of high waisted skinny jeans. Two things I appreciate: they make my legs look longer and they pair well with cropped/shorter tops without showing any skin.
I don't do the half tuck, but that works well with your jeans.

More love for the hair!

As far as the jeans, I think these look great on you whatever they are called, but as someone with a thick waist I don't think they will work on me. And I tend to like slimmer thighs on my jeans to help make me look thinner I do love them on you though.

You look amazing. I have 2 pairs of high rise jeans at the moment - 1 from JCrew and the other from Gap, and I have to admit....they're pretty comfy on this curvy middle-aged bod. But, I'm short waisted, so I am a bit at a loss for styling them well.

I am middleaged and have a pair of mom jeans. I got them at Ann Taylor. They are full-length skinnies, dark blue, no distressing. I like the proportions on yours with the cuff rolls. I'll have to try rolling my cuffs farther up the leg to make the proportions nicer.

Am I an art school teacher? Among other things. You could say it's my day job. See if you can spot me in the picture.

Seriously though, it's an amazing environment and I love it. I teach Data Design and Social Media and the students are mostly awesome but the best thing about it is that I'm learning while I'm teaching, which makes me a student too.

I should write a post about Art School Style. What are they wearing at your place?

I'm with the others in that these aren't mom jeans as I know them, but I know you insist they are , so...;) They look great on you, as jeans like this do on slim hipped straight-bodied women, and I see them as a high-rise boyfriend, which is a great look. Mom jeans are more fitted and bum -hugging than this . Anyways I think this is the first pic I've seen of you , and I too love your hair !

OK, late start to work today, so have Googled the skit. Yep, very funny! Surprised to see it was 2003, thought those jeans started in the 90s like Janet said. I didn't wear jeans much in the early- mid 90s as a young Mum, mainly leggings. Also "fit Mom's body"! I had grown out of my skinny 80s jeans by then and was sad about that. I had these stirrup 80s ones I had loved.

Yep, that works.

I said in the other thread that the look doesn't work for me, but I'll admit that they're darn comfy when they fit right. I've hung onto a couple of pairs from the last time around for that very reason.

And as a middle aged lady who hangs around in an art school, I say fly the flag. Play them at their own game, take that unfancy normcore and throw it right back at them. I'm not wearing the mom jeans but the teacher always needs to stay one step ahead. It's the only way to get them to respect you.

Thanks, Janet! Yes, I've got them styled in a boyfriendy way, but they're definitely mom jeans. By the way, I think high-waisted jeans look good on women with a defined waist. I'm sure you looked better in your 1990s Friends jeans than you thought. :-)

Thanks, Sarah! I wasn't really shopping for jeans either, but I feel like my jeans capsule could use refreshing. I don't follow all the trends, but I like to have up-to-date denim because my style is built around it. I have lots of skinnies that I don't feel like wearing -- or that do not fit, thanks to a Christmas holiday of overindulging. :-)

Firecracker -- what, you didn't think I was a grinning pumpkin? (I'm not a fan of posting pictures of myself. Aren't younger people always going to make fun of how middle-aged women look? Us middle-aged women can secretly ( or not) make fun of what teenagers choose to wear?

High rise jeans -- or mom jeans (but I don't think all high rises are mom jeans) -- look much better on slim-hipped ladies like you. On women like me, they are usually a disaster.

" ...any jeans that have a foot-long zipper, ease through the hip and thigh and tapered legs..." You have just described my nightmare jeans. I wore them in the early 90s when of course the Friends ladies were wearing them, and I was youngish and skinny then, but looking back at photos I can tell they did me NO favors. However, that is ALL that was available in jeans at the time. Now that there are more options and I know what flatters me, I will stay away from mom jeans and leave them to those who wear them well.

ETA: You look adorable in those jeans, whatever you call them. I don't think those are mom jeans -- they look more boyfriend-y on you the way you are wearing them.

Emily K -- yes, I agree that they are current, but they are still mom jeans in my book! Half of what is out there right now could fit into the classic mom jean category. Also, I am sizing way up because I feel like high rise jeans look more "effortless" if they are loose -- like I went to the thrift store and bought a pair of jeans that don't quite fit. Tight "wedgie" jeans look much more deliberate to my eye. That is neither good nor bad, but for my style in particular, it's the wrong vibe. Plus, they are neither comfortable for me, nor flattering -- I'll leave that look for the sweet young things who have pear or hourglass-shapes. (I feel like tight high-rise jeans don't do any favours for rectangle or hourglass gals, no matter how young they are; women with little natural waist definition look completely waist-less in this style).

Those jeans look current, to me. Not mom jeans. I get what you're saying, though. I'm scared of the whole "wedgie" jean look for sure because I wouldn't want to tread into possible mom jean territory. What if they were pegged?...acid washed?...or (heaven forbid!) pleated?

Aw thanks, Angie! The jeans look a bit better in real life than in pics, I think -- they are a lighter denim than they appear. Thanks also for the hair compliment. It's an especially nice one, since what you are seeing is bed head. I woke up with this hair. I'll have to pass the compliment on to my hairdresser.

Thank you!

FUN. Super cute jeans, Elisabeth. (I'm chuckling at your surrender to the high rise. That's like me and cropped pants. It IS on our terms though, isn't it). Enjoy your jeans. They like you right back.

And I LOVE your hair. Kinky in all the right places.

Always trying, I have no idea what these jeans are actually called by the manufacturer! But any jeans that have a foot-long zipper, ease through the hip and thigh and tapered legs are mom jeans in my vocabulary. After you've seen the classic mom jean SNL skit, they can be called nothing else.
