I read an interesting perspective on this behaviour a few months ago. The author's position was that children who experience "helicopter parenting" rarely experience negative situations by themselves--there is always someone there to pick up the pieces or set things right. Add to that the insulating qualities of never being allowed to fail, or experience severe distress, and, according to the author, we've created a generation who lack the ability to recognize, empathize, and act when someone else needs help. One of the most interesting things I ever learned about was those airplane emergency cards. Do you realise there's pretty much no useful info on those cards should a real emergency arise? They function by priming the brain to remain responsive.</p> <p>ETA: I mean, I hated that senior home and just felt useless there and was. But it seems I'm now prepared to act. I do just because I can. No other reason. I mean, I don't look for old people in trouble... That's very exciting news!</p> <p>People are very unthinking. You can be in a wheelchair and they will still be terrible. Once when I was at the bakery, a woman got stuck in her wheelchair for 6 hours. Ran out of power. She was there until one woman finally noticed something was wrong and got two boys to push her to the bakery parking lot. Then they all ran away, including my coworkers, who never did more than have a look. I pushed her the rest of the way into the bakery by myself, helped her to the restroom in the back...a broken motorized chair is not something that wants to move, boy. When it was all over, a coworker patted me and said 'you're a good person. I'd never have done all that.' Lol. Yes. I know. Ahaha! </p> <p>Guess that community service we had to do in school had some effect after all. I did my requirement at a senior home and was spectacularly bad at it. The seniors wouldn't talk to me except crazy Margaret. But it's funny, because since becoming a grown up - I tell you, it seems like I'm always picking elderly people up who've fallen on the street.</p> <p>I think people don't know how to do things.
