Maya, you seem to be having a very frustrating summer with your skin and hair, it's little wonder you love autumn so much.

I have no real advice as I'm not really keen on using product myself I'm just sending positive vibes for a quick solution.

BTW I really liked your hair in the photos.

Ok, I put a bit of curl gel in while my hair was wet and then just finger twisted it. It is still very fuzzy and not so fab.

Tomorrow I'll try not combing it at all and not twisting it and see what it does on its own with the curl gel. The thought scares me a little...

While I have no specific advice for you as I only started paying attention to my hair after getting it cut short, I would like to second Michelle's recommendation for John Master's Organics range. Their shampoo and hair conditioner range has made my hair incredibly soft.

Maya you just mentioned the climate - I think you will find this could be a big part of it.

It sounds like your hair is quite similar to mine, and in our Summers, when its very humid, I've found it far more difficult to deal with than Winter.

My hair is also wavier than straight, but not curly, and in the humid months the frizz is ridiculous. I often straighten it in Summer purely to flatten out the frizz because it drives me nuts.

I guess if you find a difference when the humidity reduces it may be the link, if not, then I'm out of ideas LOL

Maybe just as an experiment tomorrow you could not comb your hair after a shower, just put the cream or gel in. When my hair was longer, I generally didn't comb at all, just put the gel in when my hair was still very, very wet (dripping). It helped the hair stay curlier and I didn't get as much surface fuzz. That's what I call what you were pointing out in the photos--I get it too.

Maya, why don't you try putting in some curl product (mousse or cream) and letting it air dry without brushing it out after you wash it? I think you might be surprised at the results!

Taylor, I *did* blowdry my bangs straight Otherwise they kink up...so I guess they are wavy too...

Shana, it's air dried in those pictures. But you have seen my hair in person so you know how straight it was just a few months ago! Maybe it's a climate thing.

I think I'd like to wear it wavy for a while, but I am sort of in shock mode at the moment. The idea of not brushing my hair out or constantly touching it is foreign to me. But I love wavy hair and if I could get it to look nice and neat that would be super.

Looks like I need an appointment at Blow badly.

Maya, are those pictures of your hair air-dryed? If so, it looks like you have some slight wave - not too much though. I like the way it looks in the photos - the slight wave gives it some nice texture that I think is probably a little more hip than stick straight hair. I can't see much frizz - can you keep trying some products to deal with that?

I have wavy hair which I blow dry straight every few days. The only time that I ever get the dry, icky feeling is when I use a straightener. it seems that no matter what temp it is set at and what products I applied beforehand, I end up with dry, crackly ends. I usually have to wait for that damage to grow out and then just cut it off. I have stopped using the straightener altogether but of course blow drying alone doesn't help my hair behave during these hot, sticky days that we have been having. You have not seen frizz until you've seen my hair in the humidity!

Maya,
After looking at your hair photo's (nice job BTW) Your hair does not look unusually dry and damaged.

Let me first explain the difference between straight and curly/ wavy hair.

Straight hairs feels and looks much different. Straight hair, as any ~flat surface~ reflects the light and looks very shiny. also feels MUCH softer than curly hair. Curly hair by nature is MUCH dryer in both texture and to the touch. It must be conditioned more often as well. And more affected by the elements. You seem to have a combination of both. Look how shiny your flat/smooth soft fringe is, compared to the curlier/wavy parts of your hair.

This is just the nature of curly hair. It lacks the shine and softness/ or looking soft as does straight hair because light does not reflect off a curly/wavy surface.

Your hair isn't really super curly, but you could enhance that with a number of different products, but I think what you are feeling and seeing the~ 2 distinct different textures~ you have. Not all that unusual. Most people do have a combination of both to varying degrees

I really like is natural/not blown. It is a nice change.

I don't know if that helps at all, just know that you can always help the dryness by conditioning, but some of it is just the nature of wavy hair.

I personally don't recommend the conditioner as shampoo theory..It may work for some(although it baffles me completely) But you will end up a greasy mess.

Maya, I don't really mean skipping shampoo, I mean washing your hair with conditioner. Put your little bit in your hand, use it just like you would shampoo, rinse and then put on some conditioner like you normally would

Maya, I would guess you have wavy hair which could probably even go somewhat curly.

I have wavy/curly hair and one thing that helps is not to touch it at all until it dries. I put in light spray gel, work it in a little then let it air dry. It usually looks worse before it looks better, but I end up with glossy wave once it's dry. Everybody's hair is different of course. A blowdry ban is probably a good place to start!

Maya, have you ever tried the WEN products? They work absolute miracles!!! My hair used to be 'normal' but turned SO dry and frizzy (from meds) I could hardly comb it and it looked as though I was electrocuted...they have several formulas for different hair types(I have thick, slighly wavy hair) and it was *literally* an overnight change and within 1 week it was back to normal- and I tried every friggin' product that claimed to work- both salon and drugstore but this is like NO other! At least take a look at the website- it explains a lot- http://www.chazdean.com I bought mine thru http://www.qvc.com because they have a 30 day- money back guarantee- no hassle! I hope you find something that works great and satisfies you- I know how hard it is when you hate your hair, believe me...

Maya, it could just be that your hair is changing right now. This seems kind of weird, but hair can respond to changes in hormones and aging the way our skin does. My hair used to be brown and thick when I was younger (even in my late teens) but now, ten years later, it is fine and kind of mousy blonde. I've had friends who had curly hair before they got pregnant, and now their hair is straight. You may need to experiment with several things to see what works for you.

As far as gel weighing your hair down, I've found the gel really needs to be runny, not thick at all, and you might even look for products for fine hair. Everything weighs my hair down except the lightest products (which don't always work in all this humidity). For most of us, t's just trial and error. I'm interested to see what ends up working for you. I think something is bound to, it may just take a while. For what it's worth, I always think your hair looks nice in the photos you post (I know that's no consolation). I can definitely understand your frustration.

Maya, are you going to keep using your flat iron, or does the blowdrying ban include all tools that use heat?

Taylor, can you recommend some good products for protecting hair from heat? Do most heat protectants work well?

I keep it on the second lowest setting because the lowest has no effect. I think it's 250?

i don't use it these days anyway though and I used to only use it at the ends so it shouldn't affect my whole head! I need to take some clear pictures sometime so you can diagnose me Taylor.

It is probably your flat iron...too hot, they are extremely hard on the hair...brutal really if too hot...Mine in the salon can literally burn the hair right off!! Hasn't happened,:) can you turn yours down a bit?

A sign of too high a temp is frizzy (burnt) ENDS!

I guess I was just looking for reasons why it is so dry and I concluded it must be the blow drying because there isn't much else it could be. I don't color my hair. My diet is good. I drink enough water. I even take flax seed supplements. I noticed after flat ironing my hair it can feel very rough and strawlike, so heat seemed like the logical enemy.

I am giving up in part because it doesn't make my hair look much better. I may as well get a few extra minutes of sleep in.

I know you aren't going to like hearing this but...

Blow drying really is not drying to the hair unless you have over colored or over bleached hair...it's true folks. On untreated hair , when done properly...blowing down on the hair shaft rather than at the hair, it actually closes down the outer cuticle layer on the hair and makes it quite shiny and sleek. Not drying at all...the elements are much worse and have a much greater effect on hair...sun, humidity, chlorine, hair products, hair color and so forth.

I do not want to discourage you from trying this though, I believe something can be gained by this little experiment and I will be interested to see what it is you discover about your hair.

So much wisdom I can barely stand it!

I wonder if I should get my hair cut by someone who specializes in curly hair, or if that would be a joke since mine is just the ever so slightest bit of wavy.

I think my hair has the potential to get this wavy so I'm going to bring the picture in to Blow and see what they say:

http://www.marieclaire.com/cm/.....038-lg.jpg

Dusty, I did try going without shampoo but my scalp was pretty oily (ironic, isn't it). I only use a nickel sized amount on my scalp now.

Have you tried using conditioner as shampoo? I know several curly girls who do this and their hair looks fabulous. I still recommend the Suave Sleek curl cream. It has no silicones and has really made my hair feel nice.

FWIW, I have somewhat curly hair and I stopped blowdrying it (every once in a while I still do). I did notice the texture become much better after several months off the dryer, so I encourage you to see it through!

Personally, I wash, blot, apply a good dollop of curl cream, then allow to air dry. The worst thing is if I comb it when it's wet...that will turn it into a massive poofball.

Good luck!

Oh, Maya...welcome to my world! We seem to have the same hair issues. Too straight to be treated as curly and too curly to be treated as straight. And anything we do either weighs it down or makes it a mess of fuzz. Ugh. I loath dealing with it!

I am finding that having the right product is the only way to keep it in submission. First, I don't use any shampoo except on days I go to the gym. Second I use a rich conditioner for frizzy hair. After showering, I blot dry, and use a cocktail for wavy hair: mousse for wavy hair combined with non-silicone defrizzer. Then I work it all in, don't comb it...just finger style it into the general position I want and let it air dry. The combo of product I use is light so it doesn't weigh down and strong so it hold the waves in position. However, even with this massive battalion of hair product, I still frizz up after about 4 hours and then I use a little more non-silicone defrizzer on my dry hair to squelch the rebels back into submission.

Let me know if you want any product specifics.

Some other ideas that have worked: using hair coloring will seal the shaft of the hairs so they are less frizzy by keeping moisture out of the hair. A flat iron works if you are into the high-maintenance route.

There's also the ultra exensive Brazillian Blowout which I understand WORKS but I am unwilling to pay that much $$$ at this point in my life!
