37 is my bust measurement. My shoulders are 38. And I do have a clearly defined waist. But my shoulders are straight so they're noticeable, and look a bit wider than my hips. After reading your comments I guess I'm an inverted triangle and hourglass is my secondary body type. Thanks for your help

I agree with clearlyclaire. It's what your shape looks like when viewed from the front that counts, though measurements help in confirming your body type.

I got caught up with the fact that my shoulders measures 40" and my hips 36" and thought I was an IT, however, my shoulders are *flatter* and my hips and *rounder* and if you look at me head-on, my shoulders barely look wider than my hips. So I dress for a slim hourglass and just keep my broad shoulders in mind when choosing necklines and such.

All this is to say, measurements are a great help, but if you could post a picture, we can help you determine what the eye picks up as well. It sounds like you're on the right track, though!

If your shoulders are wider than your hips, you're likely an inverted triangle with hourglass as your secondary (this is my shape as well ).

EDIT: Claire is spot on. If the shoulder-to-waist difference is small, you could treat IT as a secondary. This is actually what I do.

Is 37 your chest measurement or your shoulder measurement?

My shoulder measurement is 38, and so is my hip measurement. My chest measures 36, while my waist measures 29... though my waist may actually be less than that now that I lost some weight after gallbladder surgery. Anyhoo, the point is that the hourglass figure has shoulder and hip measurements that are the same, with a clearly defined waist.

Sounds to me like you're mostly an inverted triangle, but that you still need to dress in a way that emphasizes your waist.

Hope this makes sense.

I think you got it right, hourglass and IT combination! I am hourglass pear so follow both dressing guidelines.

My measurements are 37-26.5-37. I have a slender frame so my top half looks rather curvy. These measurements would make me an hourglass, however my shoulders are still wider than my hips and I have quite long legs in proportion to my torso and a small bum. Maybe a combination of inverted triangle and hourglass?
