Steph, that seems like a VERY useful tip. Thanks! Maggie London looks like it could be a treasure trove of flattering dresses. That could refill the ralph lauren shaped hole in my wardrobe, since RL has branched out and stopped making such a large number of floaty knee length halter dresses. Butterfly, I know several great seamstresses, including the costume designer for the art school I work at. I've been afraid to get a dress made for some reason, but I'm seriously considering it. If if do, I will definitely be posting pics.

This is a casual dress from Patagonia that does not have a chiffon overlay, but it has the right shape:

Do you know anyone who can sew, who could make one (several!) for you? That style of dress sounds beautiful, but I've not seen any like that recently (and I'm in a different country to you, any way!).

Mochaccino, try 6 pm (you can click through Angie's link on the bottom right of the blog page). They have a huge selection of dresses. Sometimes Overstock.com does too.

If you post your size range, I'll be on the lookout for you.

I tried on a Maggie London dress at Nordstrom that fits all but the chiffon criteria. Unfortunately, when I looked online, I couldn't find it (it was on the sale rack in my local Nordstrom, and the petite version was featured prominently in that section--it was a bright royal blue).

When I searched for that dress, however, I found this one. Looks like it might hit all of your criteria (and comes in several colors). The neck does have a keyhole, but if that bothered you maybe it could be sewn closed?:

Since I have such an exagerrated pear shape, finding dresses that fi both my upper and lower body is unusually hard for me, but I've always dreamed of having a huge stock of fun summer dresses. Luckily there's one very specific style that almost never let's me down, but I have a really hard time finding dresses that fit the bill. I'm looking for dresses that fit the following laundry list of specs:

Hemline hits anywhere from just below the knee to midi length.

High neck sleeveless bodice with deeply set in shoulders ( high neck halters usually fit the bill, plus the adjustability of the tie neck is a huge advantage because of my small bust)

Defined waistline is a must.

Chiffon overlay on the entire garment. In other words a chiffon dress, but they are virtually always lined for obvious reasons.

So is that too much to ask for, or does anyone actually know where I can find such a thing? Suggestion for other extremely light weight fabrics are welcome. My reasons for choosing chiffon have to do with drape and visual "diffusion" (if that makes any sense), not temperature. For those who don't know, a chiffon overlay is like a hazy glamour shot filter for your whole body. Its the most forgiving fabric I can think of, even though it's sheer. I just can't get enough of the stuff. I think I might of gone a little off topic
