I did need a lightweight wool coat--although not nearly as heavy as what I need for Chicago or Salt Lake. We did have occasional light frosts in the winter, and 3 or 4 years ago it got down to 25° in the San Fernando Valley--a disaster for tropical plant lovers! </p> <p>I also had wool clothing. The difference in So Cal is that you don't layer a lot. I see lots of people sporting these kind of coats here in the Bay Area. I think they look very stylish. My wool coat hasn't seen daylight in 20 years--actually, I'm not even sure if I still have it. I tend to wear my lined London Fog when it gets chilly--only because it's usually raining when it does finally get cold. It also feels less bulky for me and is easier for me to layer under.
