I got my coat at Macy's. They have a good selection in their brick-and-mortar stores, including petite sizes. It's medium weight wool with buttons, no belt, and I love it.

I love the Karen Millen but think it might be a bit too distinctive for an outer coat. I do like the stone one and the last black one as well.

You may need to touch and try them to know if they are too heavy. There are varying weights of wool and you want to get it right.

I like the stone one, too. A good colour for LA. Belts can be a bit of bother, but I'm into them for the waist definition. I doubt they'd be too warm. I haven't been able to find a warm wool coat in years.

...One year, I went to NYC at Thanksgiving (at 25° ;>), thinking surely I could find a warm one on the East Coast. Total strike out. I did find the cutest quilted earflap hat in lavender, at Barneys - and promptly lost it on the flight back. Waaah!

GP, I actually tried it on yesterday (not for me, was modeling for a friend who asked me to shop with her), and it fit me well - it's a good cut for an IT/rectangle. It's still pricey, though! I do love Rae's choices, but just wanted to throw some others out there.

AG, LOL so true! How else do explain why I have three parkas and puffers?

Rae, I saw AG's suggestions but I still vote for your #2. I think the stone will look better than the camel on you with your skin tone, and black seems rather heavy for SoCal winters. Also I tried on that Mackage Tessa and didn't have good luck with it even though I had really high hopes for it:
Don't worry; I'm not spending $600...

What do you all think about belts? Do they just get in the way? Which are more fussy: buttons or belts? Do you think either of these would look silly left open?

Sorry about the other pics - for whatever reason, they won't load, and I also can't remove them.

GP, I'm hoping this color would be close to the oatmeal color of the UWP sweater, which I was surprised to like a lot. Thanks for the solidarity, fellow Cold Californian!

Most women here do have wool coats to throw on to and from work and when going out for lunch - some even have full-length ones. It is true, though, that we do not layer much. I don't think anyone has had a coat on over a blazer, for example.

I lived in LA and later Santa Barbara for nearly 20 years. I did need a lightweight wool coat--although not nearly as heavy as what I need for Chicago or Salt Lake. We did have occasional light frosts in the winter, and 3 or 4 years ago it got down to 25° in the San Fernando Valley--a disaster for tropical plant lovers!

I also had wool clothing. The difference in So Cal is that you don't layer a lot. Also, homes and offices aren't as well insulated as in colder areas and can get pretty chilly during a cold snap.

Ooh! I like the stone one--it looks very you, Rae! This looks very sharp for work, I think. And it looks like it's light enough to contrast with your skin, right? (I was told to go for cream instead of camel). I think that looks fine for California especially if you are cold. I'm loving my puffy parkas right now for chilly mornings and it's 60 degrees out! So yes, we Californians are wusses but I'd rather be a warm wuss.

I agree with Mo. I see lots of people sporting these kind of coats here in the Bay Area. I think they look very stylish. My wool coat hasn't seen daylight in 20 years--actually, I'm not even sure if I still have it. I tend to wear my lined London Fog when it gets chilly--only because it's usually raining when it does finally get cold. It also feels less bulky for me and is easier for me to layer under. I love the coats in pics 2 and 4 and could definitely see you sporting them : )

Forecasts are saying highs in the 60s. Wednesday night upper 30s to mid 40s. It was definitely around 40 when I left for work recently, because the whole office was abuzz about the cold (I know, we are wusses, compared to most of the country - but we are unprepared wusses as well).

I love the tweedy/black one and the solid-colored ones too--fab fitted military styling action! Not sure about the California climate and wool. How cold does it get? I would think these would work, but my climate is very different...

I like the "stone" one. #1 is funkier but #2 will be easier to wear - na dit is not boring at all with those zipers!
I cannot comment on the warmth factor in CA though, not with my Canadian winters...

I really love that "stone" coat, Mo. It's classic with a twist. I think it would definitely be office appropriate, and you can always leave it open if you're worried about being too warm.

Ooh, I like the Karen Millen! But it may have a few too many bells and whistles if it's your only wool coat and also needs to be office appropriate. I think if you just wear the coat over your normal outfit, say a skirt and blouse, you won't overheat. Now, if you start layering jackets under it as well you might get hot fast in LA.

All these years, I only needed to brave any elements from my door to my car, and a nice warm parking garage shielded me from the rest. Now, I park in an open air structure, go down 4 flights of stairs, cross the street, and walk a block before I get to the office. It's not far, but it's a big enough difference for perpetually-cold me. I feel like my furry coat is too warrior-like, and my wool blend coat is... well, sadly low on the wool (from a juniors line in the mall).

I'm considering these (don't know why the one pic isn't loading, so here's a different link (I'd be trying out an outlet site): http://us.karenmillen.com/Kare.....g_shopping).

The gray/black tweed is around $130 after a 25% off promo, 58% wool, 18% polyamide, 12% wool mohair, 12% alpaca.

The "stone" colored one is about the same. It also comes in black. 75% wool, 25% polyamide. About the same price; a tiny bit less.

I don't know anything about wool coats - would these blends be too warm for CA? I like to be cozy, but not sweaty. Also, are either of these good for the office? Too flashy? I need conservative, but I'm done with spending on boring.

ETA another black option, since Mo made a good point about bells & whistles. $140 ish, 23% Polyester,77% Wool with differently textured panels.
