Elle and mtgirl, I'm also on a Paleo ish diet now, partly to help with bloating. I'd love to hear more about your experiences with that way of eating.

Is the 8 the same as the Skittle body shape?
Angie, would you consider writing some tips for 8-shaped ladies?

Elle - have you tried small amounts of probiotics? Kombucha (the drink) has been life changing in healing a lot of issues. I could only drink a bit at first but it truly helped. If you are hungry, can you try to eat more healthy fat? That seems to help me.

Back to clothes :)
I just bought some jag jeans pants based on the negative review:

http://www.zappos.com/jag-jean.....ser-stucco

I ordered a size 8 as well but I think the 10's will work. I have tried jag jeans in the past but these are a different material.

mtgirl I just started paleo & have noticed less bloating. I'm finding it difficult after vegetarianism for 13 years. Also difficult because I'm not on full paleo but a much more restricted diet due to sensitivities. There's not much left I can eat, including spices. I guess I'm getting OT but for those with bloating give up the grains & see what happens.

It's funny when this sort of epiphany happens, isn't it? For years I thought I was an IT, but it turns out I'm not; I'm very much a rectangle.

You will find jeans that fit. There is a good pair for everybody. I'm no use in giving tips, because we're different shapes, but I will say that sometimes it's worth having a minor waist alteration done on otherwise perfect jeans.
I am nodding my head along with all of you. From the bloating issues to the bigger size in the front versus in the back.

I just bought these:

http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop.....s-boot-cut

they are the comfort knit not the classic fit. I bought a size 6 and I think they fit but I just ordered a 4 to see if they would fit better. They look like dark washed jeans to me. I might order the white as well. I measure 32 1/2 inches where the pants sit (little below belly button) and hips are 37". I have a long rise though. Hope that info helps someone.

The best thing I have done (besides adopt a primal/paleo "ish" diet) is to sew a small piece of elastic to the back of my pants so it helps hold them up. I am not a seamstress at all and it is UGLY but helps put the pressure against my back instead of my tummy.

The jeans that work ok for me are American Eagle. I tried on every single pair of jeans in that store I swear. Not all fit, but the skinnies sized up to a 10 have a great deal of room in the front and then I add the elastic in the back as well as a belt. Cami's tucked in help hold the pants up and then I do a half tuck. I think they look bad in the back but I am not on team backside :)

As soon as the weather stays nice I will be in dresses or skirts. I buy a lot of distressed denim to dress them down for my casual MOTG life.

I lost 28 pounds since those photos & my skinnies are now a little more relaxed which is more on trend anyway but I still have muffin & still haven't found any jeans that don't do it. When I wear myhusbands jeans which are very loose they slip lower showing even more of it at the front. I just have to hide it with loose tops. It is not a matter of us wearing our jeans too tight. I have changed my diet to help with the bloat but I'm still an 8 & clothes are made for Xs I think.

glad this post got resurrected! I'm an 8 too and am having trouble finding white jeans this season. Even a midrise on me slides right off and it doesn't work at all to cinch tighter! But I don't want it so high that I feel frumpy. Sigh.

I'm shaped like this too. I've had good luck with GAP jeans in the past, but it's hit or miss. Right now I have a pair from Patagonia brand that are great. They size based on waist-band inches the way that men's pants do.

I tend to buy pants ( and skirts) based on the fit at the waist and let the hip and bum be a bit loose. I don't know if that's " right".

I can wear a lower rise with a high hip but I have to wear a belt else they
slide down, like a guy's would. It's hard to get the tautness of the belt right, too. Either it tends to slide anyway or it doesn't but creates the muffin top.
I like it better when the sides of the pants waistband goes over my high hip.

Mens pants can fit me very well. It makes sense.

ETA: I get the digestive bloating, too, in the lower abdomen. I have to watch
dairy. Even without the bloating, I notice that I am a different smaller size
in the back half of clothing than in the front. I made a skirt from a pattern recently and saw that the back side seams wanted to be all the way over into the front and the front was not reaching far enough to the side.
Realizing that I am almost certainly an 8 with a hip shelf has been nothing less than a revelation for me. Now I know why A-line skirts look terrible on me, and why I despaired of my "hip fat muffin top", which I now realize is my skeleton! It was an actual relief to give away six or seven pretty skirts I could never get to look right because they flared from the high hip and made me look like a roller skating waitress from another planet.

Am I right, though, that Levi's Curve ID has too low a rise for 8 shapes? The Demi through Supreme Curve seem like they narrow at the waist just where we still have hipbone. Wouldn't a waistband more open at the top be better for this shape, unless the rise is high? (Signed, I have a beloved pair of Demi Curves but they cut in in an unflattering way.)

Is a high hip a high rise by default?

Have you tried the new Levis shape fit jeans? I'm very curvy and they work great on the bottom - no gaps. I think I have the Bold Curve body type jeans. You can pick depending on your waist to hips ratio, and the waistband is tummy-friendly. Another great denim find is Ann Taylor jeans. Not the Loft, but regular AT, The modern fit trouser jeans are so very nice.

I'm an 8 shape, too, with the same tummy issues! You and I are very similar from the back....with high and low hip visually the same width. It's not an easy shape necessarily, but it is considered an enviable one.

I believe Mo is an 8 shaped hourglass as well. Maybe she will chime in with some brand recommendations. I must be your tummy bloat twin. I have to avoid wheat and yeast. :/

I, too, wrestled with this - I think my pic is actually in the comments on her blog. I thought I was a pear for 40 years, then came here to find I was an hourglass, then saw over there that I was likely an 8 hourglass. Jeans that work for me are Miss Me, low rise Levi's, True Religion, and J Brand.

Hi Elle!

I'm not an 8-shaped gal, but I'm a squishy rectangle - which means I have a squishy belly!

That being said, I've been having a rough time looking for jeans as well, though so far I found the Gap mid-rise Always Skinny to work on me. Perhaps give those jeans a shot?

I'm not sure how it will help me find the perfect jeans. I don't think they exist for 8 shapes but I think I'm an 8 according to the body types on inside out style blog. It means my hip is high & I carry weight on lower abdomen. Jeans are designed more for X shapes who are wider at the top of the thighs. I am widest just below my waist & then stay the same all the way down to thighs.

My tummy isn't always as bad as last pic. It depends what I eat as I bloat easily. I wanted to show it at it's worst though.

Well I hope I can find jeans to fit but maybe not. At least on Imogen's blog there are some recommendations for 8s that may differ from a general hourglass suggestion.
