Does it make me "old" to say I don't understand "sick cute" style?
I think as we age, we try out different identities, fashion and otherwise. Some things become long term parts of us, some not. We're not "discovering ourselves", or giving up some essential part of our nature by aging, but in the constant process of reinventing ourselves/adding new things to our definition.

Fun read. I loved the last comment, “Readers, I dyed my hair purple.” That is a threat I have used but once I do it, I will have no grounds to say anything about anyone’s craziness.

This was great thank you Jules. Because I have never seriously rebelled I couldn’t relate to some of it- like I didn’t understand that Princess Diana’s wedding dress was based on New Romantic because I didn’t get that at the time. But my wedding dress 5 years after hers had the same influences.
Cool thinking about it as a mother of 2 daughters now 28 and 25, and not rebelling either, but showing their own style.

Cool read, with great illustrations. I had never heard of harakuju style. I'm sort of glad I have a son, so I'll never have to navigate the possibly conflicted mother-daughter relationship - but of course my son could come home with a rebellious streak neither me nor my husband ever had :-D.

This was fascinating, thank you! I remember Gwen Stefani bringing harajuku style to western eyes, but it is great to see current variations so well illustrated. I own a pair of black patent boots with "all the buckles." In college I combed thrift stores and wore striking makeup: a little New Wave, a little Rocky Horror, but when I got my first full time job I became very conservative in my style.

It interests me that Japanese culture, thought to be ultra-conforming, has created such a wild, exuberant youth culture. Perhaps they too will have to put on a knee length office dress when they go to work. I hope they secretly have crazy undercrackers!

This was really interesting a thought-provoking. I absolutely love seeing what my kids wear and pondering what it reflects about how they view the world. I am determined not to age into one of those "get off my lawn" people who think young people don't get it (nor do I idealize them - they have a lot to learn and complaints are far simpler than solutions - as they will learn, like we had to!)

I feel maybe a bit like Janet. To me, I'm settling into "this is who I am" whereas when I was younger it was all about "who could/should I be?" ... the journey continues!

Hmm. I’ve just realised that I think I’m getting plainer in my old age, but this is not true at all. It’s just that I’ve managed to develop a routine and formula that takes less time... lol

Great read!! I have sons (whose only fashion concern is whether their shorts are long enough) and I wasn’t rebellious when it came to my own clothes as a teenager. Nonetheless, it was fun to read about Japanese fashion and the effects on teens these days. I thoroughly enjoyed the parts about how we view ourselves as we age. I’m certainly enjoying the flashier elements of my wardrobe (red shoes) and trying things I would never have dared to, when I was younger.

What a fun read! Thank you so much, Jules. I believe the Advanced Style women would give the Harijuku girls a run for their money. With 10 years on the author, Annie Hall style was my thing in high school and uni - tiered prairie skirts, Frye boots (or more affordable look alikes), tweed jackets, baggy pleated trousers, pussy bows, menswear shirts. Funny how as a senior I’m discovering jean jackets and leather motos!

Although experiencing ‘organic decline’ I’m not inclined to waste time complaining about it. I’m happy for my experiences, but given my druthers, I wouldn’t want to be any age other than the one I am now or have any other body.

What an interesting read.Good to know that I am heading towards organic decline.I will just get my husband to toss me on the compost heap then.
As for being jealous of your daughter, well I am not.l feel an overwhelming sense of pride in her but I see that she has her struggles as I have mine.I ve been a teenager and. I am glad that I am not one now.No one talks about the good side of aging very much do they.l of course would like better health and skin but I am much less of a worrier and much more me than I have ever been.Theres a David Bowie quote isn’t there saying something along the lines of ,As I age I am becoming the person I was always meant to be and that is how I feel.Dont get me wrong I feel the full glare of society ‘s disgust at a wrinkly face/limb/cleavage as much as the next woman but where does that come from?Sometimes I think women are their own worst enemies as it is often them whispering mutton about other and not the men.

Interesting! Thanks for sharing. I don’t relate to the mother-daughter aspect of this, but the larger themes of style, nonconformity, and age are thought provoking.

I don’t envy young people now — I’m glad I grew up when I did. But I wasn’t a rebellious kid and I didn’t go extreme with goth/punk influences in my dressing when I was a teen or in college — it just didn’t suit my life (I worked in an office from the time I was 16), and I had seen the fights my parents had with my sister 10 years earlier over her circa 1969 cutoff denim that exposed butt cheek and other hippie styles that scandalized my conservative parents who were born during the depression and had lost their peers at war.

I feel like I have more freedom now to dress how I like than at any other time in my life, if i ignore the fact that my body is not slim anymore and most clothes just don’t look as objectively “good” on me now as they used to. Oh well. Gotta wear something, right? So may as well enjoy it and express ourselves!
