Looks like if you are going with the trend of oversized + thick material, you will need bigger jackets. I do not plan to wear anything really oversized so I will not have this problem.

I hope there's more insight here, because I'm really curious about the answer!

For my part, I've been losing weight as tops have been getting more fluid, so I'm simply not replacing my toppers. I have cardigans that went from "fitting" to "oversize/boyfriend", and I'm wearing them as-is (for the record, I knit them, so they won't easily go into the donate pile nor will I go to the trouble of altering them).

Underneath blazers and other structured toppers, I'm still wearing things that are relatively fitted. Loose, perhaps, but not oversize. and sleeves will be an issue (when winter rolls around for me again), because I don't like much bulk around my arms, and a full-length sleeve under a blazer is usually enough to make me crabby.

This is a really good question and something that has been a concern for me as I love structured jacket as much as I love unstructured toppers:) I think there are a lot of variables when it comes to making this work. I don't mind a longer hem falling below my jacket at the back, but it does depend on the length of that top. If I am going to wear a jacket over say a hi low top, I sometimes tuck the back of the top in loosely so that it doesn't affect the intregrity of the drape and fall at the front of the topper ... so it's neat from the behind, but the there is drape at the front under the open jacket. Alternately the right shaped and length oversized topper can be worn beautifully under a more structured jacket as is.

I think it still depends on fabrication and cut. My new sweaters, for instance, are "fluid" but I can still easily wear a blazer type jacket over them. My GAP cable knit sweater on the other hand can't take a blazer-type topper. It's just too bulky and even if I could layer over it (other than a coat, I mean) I wouldn't want to.

The wrap blouses with hi-low hem seem to be the toughest items to layer over (for me, anyway). Because it looks weird to have a "tail" hanging out your back and to squish the fluidity and make it disappear up front. Sort of spoils the effect, somehow.

So tops are getting more fluid and now a normal jacket won't fit as well over the extra material. Not even talkin' about chunky oversized.

Because of how i dress at work, not often wearing a tradional indoor topper durng the workday, I'm moving more toward " parking lot" jackets-- short (or long) trench or dafari jacket or all- purpose topper for transit, for running errands after work, rather than very many actual indoor jackets( seger says looking at a dozen still in the closet).
These don't have to " go" as precisely as typical indoor toppers and can layer over various fits. So that " capsule" can be leaner and maybe free up space and resouces to updated more
as needed.

But what do you do if you wear a lot of real toppers during your workday? Are
they still working for you? Have you
had to buy new fits there?

One thing I think is that the fluid or sized up fit is way more important when there is no plan for a topper.
Because the fit is more exposed.

Perhaps that's so obvious but it is helping me see which items do or don't need to " go" with something vs stand alone. Plus to remember that i need a few slimmer knits and blouses to fit
under a jacket and have that capsule but not try to expect all my tops to
match up with the perfect topper.
