Fascinating. I'm reasonably comfortable in heels from 3/4" to 2.5", but true to the measurement, 1.5" is my happy height. Love those block heels, and will be sad when that trend passes!

Interesting article. I'm comfortable in anything from flats to heels, but there's a very definite limit on the heel height I can comfortably wear: anything up to 3.25" is fine, but another quarter inch and my feet are very unhappy.

Natural heel-wearer here too. I like my heels best right at 3". That said, I don't find flat shoes uncomfortable if they have cushioned soles and decent arch support.

Yay! I'm a natural heel-wearer!

I find anything up to 3" perfectly wearable, although I probably wouldn't want to do any serious walking in anything higher than 2 or 2.5". Block heels are far more comfortable for all-day wear than stilettos, of course.

Let's not run away with this. Perhaps the lack of clarity comes from the reporter and not the podiatrist but: it is one thing to demonstrate that your talus is flexible enough to wear a 3 inch heel without pain; that is NOT the same thing as saying that is your OPTIMAL heel height that should be worn all the time.

That measuring test is also affected by how tight the Achilles tendon is... which will automatically be tighter if you have been wearing heels 3 days in a row. Which means next time your feet hit the floor in the morning, you will get heel pain from stretching. So varying heel height is important, even if you do tolerate high ones comfortably.

My daughter (a highland dancer) discovered something online that was more useful I think. It uses a similar measuring technique, but the result tells you WHICH heel height you can wear most comfortably, when you do choose to wear heels. (So for example you might find that 3" is more comfortable than 2 1/2.) I will forward her info source if I can find it.

Also dancer terminology, but when I mentioned how comfortable I found a shoe in a particular mid heel height, she said "oh, that must be where your half-point is".

So, I just looked online for some articles and if they are anything similar, to the one posted in the above link, I should be wearing higher than I typically purchase! 3.5. -4 inches! Wow! I do like heels though so maybe that's why! Who knew!

http://www.alterationsneeded.c.....eight.html

Here is the link to the article I used in case anyone else has trouble with the above link. I hope mine works.

I still believe in changing the height of my heels and type of shoes I wear frequently to give all the muscles in my feet exercise.

Fascinating! This definitely mirrors my experience - almost all of my pumps are about the same height (a notch or so above 3 inches) because anything higher or lower doesn't feel right, and that makes sense with the shape of my feet. That said, I have many wedges at lower heights that work fine, too . . .

You know, dancers' feet are usually an awful mess. I'm not sure we should be judging from their experience. ;)

But. Having said that, I am still 100% convinced that a mid height heel is one of god's great gifts.

I also think variety is the key -- switching our shoes and wearing different heights.

Holy cow! Just took the measurements and, apparently, I should be parading around in 3-4 inch heels. Guess I better start practicing some "pageant walking". I have very long feet (size 12) and loose joints, so this might have something to do with how the math worked out.

Suz, I don't think wedges would be significantly different; there's still a height difference between the ball and heel. They aren't flexible, but that's kind of a different function to the talus bone. The main thing is subtracting the height of the platform: 1/2" platform, 3" wedge = 2 1/2" heel height.

Interesting thought about men, too. For what it's worth, I remember noticing that my father's and brothers' feet tend to be a lot closer to 90 degrees than mine or my mothers. Interesting especially since one of my brothers is very loose-jointed. But it also might be a result of having worn only flat shoes all their lives.

I saw a different version of this test elsewhere. I do think it's accurate. I have never been comfortable in completely flat shoes -- they are an agony for me, in fact. A 2 to 2.5 inch heel seems best, though I can go up to 3 and down to 3/4 of an inch with the right insole and fastening on the shoe (no open flats). But how to wedges play into this? And I wonder about all the men...how are they all managing in flats? (In this century, at least...going back to the 18th we would see some men in heels).

Also, don't you just love how she calls it PHH? Goes with Angie's PPL.

i would add that there is a maximum height that needs to allow your forefoot to flex at the ball of the foot to lift your heel as you take a step. otherwise you'll be plunking down your foot like a dancer from stomp. so 4 in (100mm) is too high but 3.5 in (~90mm) is fine.

there is also a goldilock height which may be a function of your calf muscle. i can wear 3.5 in better than 2.5 in. at the lower height, my calf is constantly engaged and gets cramped.
