I don't even have to think about it...I'd go to NYC...the greatest place on earth! I'd steal all of Kate Middleton's clothes (in my size, of course), I'd buy a Birkin bag (or three), a Cartier tank watch, a pair of Christian Louboutin's, a house in the Hamptons and while I'm dreaming I'd also have my very own penthouse at the Plaza Hotel. I'm sure there's more, but I have to go! Thanks for letting me dream.......

I've often told my older sister-the ex-hippy now property management lady in British Columbia (old hippies never die--they turn to real estate in B.C.) that I would have been artsy punk when I left town if I knew such a transformation didn't suggest or imply or implicate drug culture (not into it-------mostly naive)--I like my life drama free but wanted the expression without huge attention. College would have been perfect if I had: A) known that then (only with hindsight can I say this now) B)had the courage and not so self conscious C) had money D) had been more out going with people of the different cultures but wanted a drama free life (#1 importance) coz figuring out how to live away on my own and make a career at 22 was hard enuff without distractions. Then had the opportunity when I started my career but was too stupid to notice---there are sooo many opportunities to try different stuff in an arts field but just carried on with jeans and t's and saving money for the next layoff.
I know all this now-- a pretty recent revelation but am still resistant to change--fear-I feel the tension just writing that. I do know now that change of venue is an opportunity to start with a clean slate (keeping in a positive change) if anyone wants to or needs to you should at least try.

Thanks ladies!

I thought I would pose this question for two reasons-- first of all because I have been thinking alot about it for myself and also because I thought it might bring up something interesting. I have heard a lot of the ladies lately talking about how people or environmental norms in their lives impact their style. I was curious to see how people WOULD like to be perceived if they had a chance to present themselves all over again.

For myself, I am actually more concerned about the overall impression I am putting out than being able to put together a "business" outfit. Based on my field and the employment offered locally is very unlikely for me to need pencil skirts and suit jackets. I guess this is where I feel the challenge. I'm essentially trying to make a different impression by going from a casual wardrobe to another casual wardrobe!

What a neat question, Elly! I'm afraid my answer is not going to be very interesting, however. I wouldn't change much about how I already dress. I want to come off as fun, casual, stylish and a bit arty. Apparently I already do. A while ago, when I was hanging out at the playground with the other parents at my daughter's elementary school, one of the moms told me she thought I was married to the father of another student. I said, oh no, he's not my husband, what made you think that? She replied that we both look sort of "hip and artsy" (her words, not mine), which is not how any of the other parents look. We live in the suburbs, but this other dad and I dress like Main street parents.

I'm pretty happy with my older (size 6) clothes and the style I had recently. It's simpler, still pretty polished and somewhat creative too. I like the shapes I wore, though I still needed more blouses and woven shirts. Someone once told me I did the Gamine look well, and I really like that style so much of what I had suited that vibe. Right now (other than the weight gain issues) I want my clothes to be similar to that style, but some of the things I wore don't really suit my heavier figure at the moment. I'm slowly evolving out of a style (and body) rut as we speak (write).

If I am reading correctly, it sounds like you are looking for a direction for your style as your life transitions from student life to career. You already know there is more than plenty of good style advice in the blogs and forum. Read again about the professional wardrobe capsules and body shape posts, and then explore ideas that you may like style-wise. The Lucky Guide to Mastering Style is ok, but not really for career wardrobes (more 20-somethings with plenty of spare time), but you may want to take a look at it and loosely (if at all) apply the guidelines to your style. Another thing to try: perhaps hang out at a lunch place of a possible work environment a couple of times and check out what other women are wearing. Maybe you'll get some good inspiration there too. If grad school is on the agenda, more professional-looking but still student clothes are likely the way to go. Not all grad students dress shabbily (despite a common stereotype). Good luck!!

I wouldn't change a thing about my style, but I'm at a completely different phase in my life right now than you are, Elly. Jeans and tees are my daily uniform!

I agree with Ornela: I really like the Chanel gal on the go formula. It's classy, sassy and fun. You can still be yourself and create a fab working wardrobe. Go for basics in quality fabrics and be sure the fit is superb. Punch up your style vibe with accessories that you love.

Good luck! I know you'll be a success.

Elly, I would not change much about my style in such a transition, because I've been pretty happy with how my style has come together over the last few years. But I think you're not really looking for what style persona others would adopt, but some encouragement on finding and expressing your own style persona, is that right?

You know you're at the right place at YLF - start imagining yourself in the clothes/outfits that you think bring out your personality (and work with your budget) and slowly try putting this together, in the privacy of your closet and with feedback and encouragement of the YLF ladies!

I have completely re-done my wardrobe in the past year or so as I've lost weight, and at this point I'm pretty happy about the "business bombshell" persona I've got going.

And I recently joined a new gym where nobody knew the fat me, and it's been interesting to have the experience of coming in as somebody who was already semi-in-shape and already a semi-serious exerciser, looking to get, uh, seriouser. Very different from my days of being in the gym as the fat girl trying to lose weight. I notice I wear a lot more tank tops in the gym now! LOL

I am okay with what I think I portray now, all I might change is the opportunity to 'upscale' my smart casual clothes. Finer fabrics and construction that more money can buy would certainly be nice. But the overall silhouettes, skirt lengths etc I am totally fine with as they are. I would love a decent haircut, but that's a story for another time

That's how I have always seen myself, but had no idea how to express it: simple, classic, room to be classy or casual / bold or sophisticated as needed, shows respect for myself and the other side without being overwhelming, and gives me the right amount confidence. I am wearing it in every possible variation since it's been revealed here and if I take nothing else from my time here, I'm sorted for life with quick and effective look that works for every occasion and works for me.

Honestly, that is still what I am thinking about. I was just posing the question because I am finding myself in this position a bit. I just realized that I am graduating in two weeks and then two months later will be looking for something full-time. I am at the point where I have little to nothing left of my college wardrobe to build off of and for the first time in a long time I will be getting to know a whole new group of people where first impressions will be important and I would like to put together a different impression of myself that what sufficed in my landscaping and college-student days.

Theoretically, if you had a chance to start over, not only wardrobe-wise, but also but making a first impression on an entirely new group of people (moving to a new city, a new workplace, whatever) what is the impression you would want to send? How would you dress to do that?
