If I really had to walk all day and couldn't do running shoes, I would do Champion mary janes from Payless shoes and go for the belle-laide hipster look.

http://www.payless.com/store/p.....ame=Womens

I've a lot of spendy shoes from various "walk shops", but I've been unimpressed - and even sometimes in pain.

Very informative thread, thanks to everyone!

I have fussy wide feet that need arch support and heel padding to avoid plantar fasciitis issues. Born or BOC is my go to brand.

This is a great question. I adore the yellow fidgi's linked here. I find any CH shoe with the Nike air is perfect for style and walkability in NYC. I also like Aerosoles (some of their shoes come in wide width) and Clarks for NYC streets. I find shoes need a bit of a sole in the city, so you don't feel the street grates under your feet when you walk on them.

btw Suz, I should have mentioned: my Malibrans are a full size smaller than my usual size. But they fit great. And I have a regular/slightly narrow foot. And they have a rubber sole and very stable heel -- perfect for walking around town all day. The Pearl Harts are lovely too, but they have a thin, smooth leather sole and narrow heel, so are better for indoor events (especially ones that involve dancing! I wish I'd owned them back in the swing dancing craze of the mid 90s. Anyone remember that?)

Lynne, the style is Tesela. That is not this season's colour, alas....

http://www.elnaturalista.com/e.....esela/N740

But you might still be able to pick it up; it's one of the fall colours.

Another vote for Cole Haan here. I had a pair that looked fantastic and carried me everywhere through Europe, many times.
How about something like this:

http://www.colehaan.com/coleha.....oup=525530

or like this:
http://www.colehaan.com/coleha.....oup=522587

Ecco is also a reliable brand for cute, distance walking shoes that you can wear with skirts.

They look like the Fidji's, don't they, Isis? And if they were, we'd be boot twins AND shoe twins! But we are not identical shoe twins because mine are El Naturalistas. I have been wearing them all afternoon and plan to start wearing them more. Trouble is, it hasn't been warm enough to wear them until just now. They are a tiny bit short for my foot - not good. But in other respects the fit is great. I think if I alternate them with other footwear, they'll do well.

Yes, your yellow shoes are perfect! Splashy, springy, splendid......You know they fit, are comfortable, and that you can walk miles in them. And now you have more money to spend in NYC!

They are Fidjis, right? I just bought a pair of E594's, a 1.24 in. heel, and I'm in love with them!

Ohhh....you are all making me feel so greedy!

Elisabeth, I love the Malibrans. I am not sure I can fit them, however. I would need to try a 6.5. I tried the 7 and it's too big/ wrong shape for my foot. I do have the Bellevue Pearl Harts but haven't worn them a lot yet. The Malibrans have the advantages that they are RED and also the heel looks more solid on them. I can easily understand why you and Una adore them.

Sveta, I'm strongly thinking of ordering a pair of Fidji's. Just going over the styles.

And Doro, the Grotesques look very cool as well.

So many choices!! What's a girl to do?

Meanwhile, I forgot all about my yellow shoes; I can certainly bring those with me, right? And they work with jeans and dresses and I think are walkable.

They get more wear in the warm months than all of my other warm-weather shoes combined. They're super-comfy, go with skirts, clamdiggers and jeans of all cuts, and I can walk for miles in them.

ETA: and the boys love them.

They are definitely the right thing to banish the frump factor! You still have time to order them to your friend's house in NYC - they deliver in just a couple of days.

Oh ok, Suz. What about these kind of styles, then? Personally, I really like the heeled oxfords, I imagine they look good with both skirts and pants, also with any shape of ankle. (Examples are all Marc Shoes, a German company, but just for illustration. I had just browsed their collection yesterday and knew they had these kind of styles. I also think a lighter or brighter colour would be more fun!)

I love my flat clarks oxfords - they are perfect for walking cos they have a lovely cushy insole. They're called Hamble Oak and come in two colours - nude and black.

Great suggestions, all! Doro, I actually prefer a bit of a heel- one to two inches- both for comfort and to banish the frump factor, which for me is considerable in most flats. Actually, most flats won't stay on my feet, period, so I can't wear them!

I am thinking that some kind of loafer might be the best bet for spring- either in a bright or a light colour. I haven't owned loafers in many years and don't know if they will also fly off my feet (as flats do). So it may become a process of experimentation.

In terms of what brand is comfy right out of the box, Softspots has my vote.

Oh, shoes... *squee* Well, on my personal wish list, there are a few styles that would fit the bill, such as Trippen Dragon bootees, Grotesque La Vie Biker bootees, Clarks Frecke Face flats, and Tiggers TS-Sara pumps. I know, the heel is probably not so good for walking a lot, but... they're so pretty *sighs happily and stares into air*

Where was I? - To answer your questions:
Versatile shoe? I'd probably go for bootees, ankle boots, oxford-style shoes, or for ballet flats, mary janes. No heel or very little heel. If you really want to do some serious walking in them, I'd actually opt for pretty shoes made of leather which also have room for an orthopaedic insole (you won't have to use one, but this assures there is enough room for your foot, and it'll be of good quality).
Can you get it fast? Well, I'd assess the shoe brands you know are comfortable for your feet, and then order several styles you like from that brand. One of them is bound to fit!

Good luck, let us know what you decide on

Not sure what you plan to wear in NYC? I bet you would be pleased with an investment in Stuart Weitman ballet flats! Otherwise, I automatically think of Naya, Fidji and maybe Naot, depending on the style. As Angie pointed out, one of the first criteria would be to get them in a light color. That would scream spring, no matter what the style. Let us know what you get!

Mine would be light colored boots since springs here are chilly.

Last spring I found a pair of Rory Frye's in sand for a fabulous price on 6pm.com. They have a low heel and are as comfy as slippers. That's my ideal spring shoe!

I don't know about versatile styles (says she of 1 million boots), but I've found Born and Softspots to be very comfy. The most comfy on ME are my Docs Marcies and my Fryes, and they do go with a lot as well.

I was going to suggest Born Arletta oxfords, too - I have them in "stone burnished" color. I also have Born Liddy flats. Both are very comfortable but I would probably go for the oxfords if I had to do a lot of walking (very soft leather). I have worn them with skinnies and skirts/tights.
