Suz--

If I were you I'd probably aim for grey, black, pewter, black and white mixture, or snakeskin patterned footwear. You could also do a greyish taupe.

thanks, that gives me lots of options! The blues and cranberry colours were for tops and toppers, scarves, jewellery, toques, gloves, etc.

Firecracker- I love vests. Especially for fall/winter. Great idea.

I've looked at Angie's picks for tops--not a lot available for plus--and I will be severely limited by what I can get locally. But shoes and boots are a lot more plentiful! I guess I should shop for them last.

Once again, I am dashing out the door (no time!) but, again, many thanks.

Alana, my favorite option of the ones on Angie's list is tops and footwear. If I want to wear my most comfortable black shoes to work, I like to add a black jacket or top, and voila! I feel put-together. Or a top with some black in it.
So, for example, if you had a brown leather (or faux leather) jacket or vest, you could pop that over any outfit that you wanted to wear brown shoes or boots with and look instantly polished. No accessories required.

ETA: this is one reason why summer dressing feels more unsatisfying and difficult to many of us. A simple contrasting top and a bottom do not an outfit make. You need something to make them cohesive.

That's it. Repetition. So it might be with a belt or it might be something else and the something else doesn't have to be an accessory. it could be in the clothes themselves.

If I were you I'd probably aim for grey, black, pewter, black and white mixture, or snakeskin patterned footwear. You could also do a greyish taupe. Navy and cranberry would be great winter colours for you but they are a lot harder to find, alas. I mean as shoes. Which doesn't mean it is impossible. Just tricky.

Brown is gorgeous, but for your first season sticking to neutrals you know will work with your hair and/or your bottoms is a really smart move.

Ah, Suz, thank you for the link! It is not the belt that is the key thing--it is the repetition! Very helpful. And yes, this helps immensely with wardrobe planning. (And spectacle buying which will be coming up soon.)

Oh, so much help! Thank you. I am about to go to bed, so I will respond more briefly than I would like.
First, the only shoes I have right now are black, white, red (my stay at home slipper/loafers) and the orange clogs. My only purse is orange--and I recently purchased an orange scarf--so those shoes are "taken care of."
I am trying to plan for the fall and I am thinking of foot wear for the fall, mostly. I'll need some sort of pump--and I'd love two pairs of boots. I love the idea of brown--and so I had been wondering how to incorporate it. So, my options are:
purse
hat
jewellery: most likely a necklace. The picture was a great help!
scarf
headband. (Ok, never say never, lol!)

--or I can just skip brown footwear all together since I just cannot see it working that well. (My projected fall colours are oatmeal, grey, black, navy, blush, cranberry and all the blues. But we will see what is out there!)

I found myself in a strange position this summer when I purchased the white pants--all of a sudden, I needed white (or silver) shoes! I had intended--as I ususally do--to just buy and wear the one black pair I'd already purchased.

Winter boots cost the Earth, though, so as much as I'd love brown, perhaps I really should skip? (Though, here I am dreaming of those brown knit ponte pants from Angie's Nordstrom picks.) Though, as this is my first fall/winter as a YLFer prehaps I ought to keep things simple (simple=affordable) by sticking to black and grey bottoms (though I may not have the luxury of being even that picky.)

Whew, that turned out to be longer than it ought to have been! You are all so wonderful to help out--and to look through past posts is truly above and beyond, Runcarla, so hugs.

Here's Angie's fab post on this concept if you haven't seen it. Read the comments, too.

You are way ahead of me. When I joined YLF I couldn't even figure out what it was that made some people's outfits (here and elsewhere) seem like OUTFITS and other people's seem like mere collections of clothes. I'm still learning this one, or rather, still learning how to put it into action, and how to manage creatively when I don't have the right pieces to make it happen easily.

My stepmom (age 69) is about as elegant as polished as they get. She looks fab rocking a headband. Granted, it's never one you would find at the drugstore, but generally a poufy silk headband. If she can pull it off, so can you!

Alana, I'm not a fan of belts due to apple tendencies and not a lot of difference between bust-waist-hips, and short waisted. I like to 'bookend' by matching footwear to hair (Cognac leather to reddish hair) or to bag (like Carter suggests) with navy shoes. I also like colourful footwear, and repeat it in my clothing (red shoes, red striped T). Black footwear is hardest for light coloured hair. I usually save my black footwear for when I'm wearing some black clothing.

Looking at your posted pics, I think your black sandals with outfits containing black work. The orange sandals with blue outfits are cute, but an orange bag or small accessory ( scarf at neck, bracelet)! Would give you the co-ordinate look you want. Greys (like your work sneaks), silver, and white will always work with your hair colour and no accessorizing required. You might want to avoid reddish brown in future, since it would be the hardest footwear to integrate with your wardrobe and colouring ( from what I see in your outfit posts.)

Which of your footwear seems to challenge you the most?

I am a pear and belts usually work well for me. But, I find them uncomfortable by the end of the day.

To add polish without the belt, I choose other accessories - scarves in the winter, necklaces, bold watches, etc.

Also, certain fabrics do lovely things with the way they drape making it a shame to run their line with a belt.

Alana, I don't wear belts either. I don't have a waist. Or a butt for that matter. However I do wear quite a bit of jewelry usually and a hair scarf is about as close as I come to a signature style. Lots of ways to incorporate accessories without a belt.

Elizabeth--maybe. Highly doubtful. I am shortwaisted as well--so even when I was slimmer, a belt was never part of my wardrobe.
Carter--a purse and a handbag, yes. A scarf or a headband is a little more problematic. Scarves, because I like bright and colourful--headbands because they skew a bit too young for me---but I will keep those ideas in mind.
Sharon--a necklace is an interesting idea, but again, I have a hard time picturing black, cognac, brown, etc, in a necklace or scarf.

Thanks for the suggestions. I hate being such a negative nelly.

Can you pick up the colour of your shoes in another accessory e.g. scarf or necklace? I'm a big fan of repeating colours in an outfit. I agree with Elizabeth that wearing a belt on the layer UNDER a long cardigan or topper can suggest a waist without actually needing to have one as the topper hides the sides.

How do you pull your look together?

I've noticed that I really love looks where the belt and the shoes are the same colour...to me it is "polished."-- which is one of my goals.

But I would NOT be happy wearing a belt. Basically, from bust to belly I am all one size--this apple is more than happy to surrender her waist!
But it does make me wonder what options I have....

Thoughts? If you have links to images of larger fashionistas, I'd love to see them, too. Thanks!
