I almost have jeans just for the “ look” tgat is achieved with denim, its place in so many aesthetics, and its being viewed as neutral, though I actually don’t like how a number of colors look with denim even though they’re photographed that way in stock photos. </p> <p>And like some other Fabbers, jeans are too hot in midsummer but not warm enough for winter ( even indoors) unless have an underlayer. </p> <p>I do have EB flannel- lined BF jeans , especially since a newer version has a bit higher rise-still not for coldest days though. </p> <p>I think it’s the waist- hip- tush fit that I have to get with jeans denim to look good- doesn’t sit right at waist &amp; flow over hip or drape on leg. Even “ trouser style “. So for me works best with a more classic style where it’s pretty fitted on butt and then I typically don’t tuck in top, but wear a shirttail hem or high- low. They skew a little preppy and I may be stepping a bit away from this approach this year, but they do work! I also have the Athleta Brooklyn pants which span the seasons and suit casual wear nicely. And my sarong pants are a nice unique alternative that sort of bridge the pants/skirt divide in summer.</p> <p>My other jeans alternatives are cargo styles in twill or other fabrications and Joggers are good too. In cooler months I like my moto pants (are they jeans? I kind of think of them that way) and corduroys. And I don’t know exactly what one would call the style of my Proenza Schouler pants but they’re a new favorite too. My new parachute pants seem like they span the seasons well and scratch a bit of a trend itch. </p> <p>I’m completely off of ponte pants now. I like lighter weight, looser cotton or linen pants when it's warm. My current pairs are both olive, different shades. Both sort of simple straight leg cuts. I always dream of a swishy, wide-legged pair of linen pants but I really like being able to roll up my summer pants (for wading, beachcombing, biking, etc), so a wide leg isn't as versatile. </p> <p>For colder weather, I like corduroy and wool; both are warmer than denim and offer a big texture boost to otherwise subdued winter outfits. I also have some mid-weight cotton pants--twill, canvas, double gauze--that are effective at spanning multiple seasons. I have found that olive is a more versatile pants colour for me than almost anything else. If I could only choose two pairs of pants, I'd go with black denim and olive twill.&nbsp;</p> <p>I do wear my gear pants quite a lot too in casual-but-mostly-outdoor contexts (park, playground, bike path, skating rink, teaching outdoor classes, etc). The black joggers, loose fitting nylon khakis, and slim-fitting grey hiking pants below are all arguably jeans substitutes for me. The grey ones are so versatile I've added a second pair in sage green, and may go pack for a third pair this spring in a darker green or brown.
