Enabling others is my favorite pasttime. :-)

I learned only the very basics of knitting from my friend, and I haven't practiced in a very long time. I'd like to get caught up in this madness. It seems like a lot of fun.

What a fun thread! I have been a knitter on and off, never so ambitious as you lot though. I would joyously participate in a knit challenge to the best of my abilities. Knit on, fabbies!

By the way, Ann, I love the shawl. It's gorgeous. It looks like a really fun project.

Quick hijack = Kellygirl, I made that brioche of yours, but I forgot to post it. I just wanted to thank you for the inspiration!
TRex and K - can I call you yarn enablers? I emailed BMFA this morning to check the colorways (the photos aren't conclusive) and will pull the trigger as soon as I hear back.

I love the idea of a triangle shawl styling thread. K if you start it, let's not wait until mine is done, right? All I have right now that's triangular is a kerchief. Maybe I'll put it on, get a shot, and then post. After I get the rest of the tomatoes in.

Isabel-are there photos?

Wow, that is really beautiful. I hope that shawls aren't frumpy. I have a few and wear them quite often, especially when I travel. The great thing about a shawl is that you can wear it as a big scarf or cuddle in the car or on the plane or on the couch with it.

Hear hear! I just had to jump in (again) (hangs head in shame, again) to boost for T-Rex's philosophy. I guess it makes sense to me because of why I knit. I knit because I love to knit, just like I love fashion because I love fashion. I love making something beautiful with my own hands. I think that's part of the reason that I only knit with yarn that I really love. I want to make sure that whatever I make is a joy to make and a joy for me or someone else to own. It seems like hardly any of us knit for the end result only anymore. I can always buy something manufactured a lot cheaper than I can buy the yarn and make it. There is something to be said for the joy of crafting something that is beautiful and brings delight to you or to another person.

I guess that for that reason I don't fret the functionality of what I knit. I've found that I can't ever be certain that I will love something that I knit. I can find someone who will love and appreciate it though and then I've had the joy of making it and seeing it well loved elsewhere. I also can't be certain that I'll wear it often. The last shawl project I finished was the Rowan Birch shawl, which I knit with two beautiful Blue Moon yarns. (Pics of others' versions of that shawl below, and btw I highly recommend the pattern. Not too simple, but not mindbogglingly difficult.) I knit my shawl in the forced quiet time that I had when I was expressing milk at work for my daughter. (Probably tmi there, sorry.) I haven't worn it a lot; however, I am absolutely in love with it and just knowing it is there makes me so happy because it is so strongly associated with my daughter! Wouldn't your shawl have the same associations for you with this wonderful time of your life? Yes! So, you've got to knit it. :)

BTW, I think you should post a challenge and ask all of us to post pics of us styling our triangle shawls!!!

So, if you aren't knitting this, you will be knitting something else. Right? What would you do with those other potential knitting projects when they are done? Would you sell them, give them away, put them in a drawer?

I say, if there are other hero projects that you are considering, then list them all in one place and consider the pros and cons of each. You may find something just as beautiful and challenging that you may find more use for. But if you don't have an alternative project in mind, then think about whether you would really be happy with a simpler project using techniques that you have already mastered.

If you decide on this project, and then find that you feel guilty if you don't wear it often enough, then give it to someone you love as a gift. Or sell it to buy more yarn. Or donate it to a charity auction so that you know that your work hasn't gone to waste.

T-Rex, I work from home: writing, photographing and a novice apple farmer in a very small ranching community. Long stretches alone at the computer interrupted by irrigation mud and chicken control. Once a month I pack up my suitcase and go to the big city to teach, go out with DH (he commutes from his science lab once a week), load up at Costco and see friends. That's why my WIW are so infrequent, gear tees and hunting pants 95% of the time. But my life has become so very casual, that's why I want to think about this project before I do it. I knit for my entertainment but it would kill me to have that shawl languish in a drawer. I can't see it at the feed store though. Not complaining, it's a wonderful time in my life.
Your Mom is awesome to do that. I had no idea that such a thing existed, or the need for it.

Personally, I have a great number of inexpensive "pashmina" shawls in every color I can find. I generally buy them during the annual hospital fundraising thing they do here every year. I know they are "fast fashion" and made in China, so I'm not exactly proud of that. But they are colorful and give me a bit of warmth when the temperature is too low in the office. I just keep a variety hanging over my cubicle wall.

My point is, do you have a job where such a beautiful shawl might come in handy as your warm, wrapped up, comfort zone garment? Even an envy inducing garment with your co-workers? If you are using it for comfort, sitting in front of a computer, you can just luxuriate in the feel of it (good comment on picking feel-good yarn) and not worry about whether it looks frumpy or not. Of course, you can still go out and rock it on occasion with the jean/boot/tee/awesome shawl pin combo that everyone seems to favor. It would be a dual use garment, then.

I'm a knitter, but not a great one. My grandmother taught me the basics, but beyond knitting and purling and knitting in the round she keeps it very basic and knits right handed and gets frustrated with my weird left-handed ambidextrous-- o so I've mostly been teaching myself. I am currently nitting a Warm Up America Afghan as practice controling tension, getting guage, and trying different stitches on something that I can use cheap yarn on and nobody is going to complain about. However, after that I am hoping to make couple scarves and baby blankets as gifts. I might have to start a thread just to ask for advice since I didn't know we had so many knitters here.

I personally think there are shawls that can be worn stylishly. A traditional wool triangle lace shawl with fringe is hard. There are many beautiful complicated more contemporary lace patterns out there and I've seen many knit bloggers modify more traditional patterns by modifying the shape and size.

I personally think that it is much easier to wear shawls when they have been resized to cover not much more than the shoulders and then wrapped around the shoulders and neck and artfully pinned off center-- the right shawl in the right color looks great over a turtleneck or a boatneck this way.
My mother in law is an excellent knitter, and she's always looking for a project. I have asked for some very specific things which have been great. A few years ago I asked for a long scarf out of black and gold yarn with big holes randomly all over it, i was copying some expensive designer thing I had seen.. she thought it sounded a bit dubious but it was very cool and a little rock chick. And I still wear it.

It would probably be frumpy on me unless I mistake the caliber of the yarn. I will wear the thinnest knits like "whisper cashmere" but anything with texture and heft I could not carry off.
I agree that a slim scarf, or a fun ski cap, is easier to pull off in hand-knitted looks.

Probably that's too bad, overall, but there it is, for me.

K -- temptation like that is not kind when I am on a yarn diet. I had not seen that yarn, it's lovely. Loads of my colors too. I hear you about wearing around the house, been looking at a kind of a cape that I can wear in the winter, with pockets no less, on Ravelry that would be super handy when I need to run out to collect eggs. I was thinking a practical superwash wool, but you are right, a nice to touch would be a treat for me. And I dream of seeing BMFA yarn in person. Not carried at any of my LYS. And thanks for the encouragement that it is possible to dress it down.

Diana--I see and no it does not look frumpy! Did you knit it? I hope in the big picture set we get to see more detail.

Is there enough interest for a Simurgh knit-along? It might be the slowest KAL ever if I'm in it.

I love that shawl and have considered knitting it. I adore the BMFA raven color ways (the recommended yarn).

I wear my big shawls as shawls with evening wear, or scrunched up as scarves with things like jeans. I also wear my smaller triangles bandanna style with the central point in front and the other points wrapped around.

Also, I wore a giant hand knit silk shawl (from a doily pattern no less) with my wedding dress last weekend, and it was not frumpy at all. Just sayin'. If you peer closely at the cake picture in my wedding post you can see it on me.

Sooooo, you know you've stepped over the line into knitting madness when you realize that not only do know the yarn company very, very well, but you also recognize both patterns from prior viewing (and know that the clapotis one was originally published on knitty.com). Blue Moon is located very close to Portland. They used to carry the most amazing yarn that was cotton overwrapped with viscose or some other shiny but soft synthetic. Then it was dyed and only the cotton picked up the color. Unbelievable. When they discontinued it, I called them and made them bring every hank that they had left to the local yarn show so that I could buy it. (K. hangs head.)

I have several of the triangle shawls and they do take some serious work to pull off. I think I have it a bit easier because hand knits like that are definitely right in the sweet spot of Portlandia style. I love the colorway you picked out for the yarn. I'd wear that shawl with a pair of faded gray black skinny jeans, tougher boots and a slim fit white tee shirt. Really getting an urban rocker vibe to it is the key here in Portland. And I'd probably fasten it with some rough vintage pin like a kilt pin.

Now my confession: I don't wear my triangle shawls out a lot. However, I do wear them a lot around the house and often when I'm at a barbecue or outdoor event. I think that's perfect. You don't wear your slippers out, do you? But you still like having ones that are warm and fuzzy and wonderful and look nice, right? I think the secret to knitting a shawl like this is to make sure that you knit it in something ridiculously luxurious that really makes you happy to see and touch it. Then really revel in it when you do wear it around the house. Is it a lot more practical to buy a cardigan? Yes. But it isn't something you made.

ETA: Have you ever seen this yarn? It makes me dizzy with love every time I fondle it at the yarn store.

http://www.jimmybeanswool.com/.....QgodcnoAeg
T-Rex, I'm not sure where I got the phrase, but yeah, a heroic accomplishment, like an aran sweater, or a Dale of Norway with all the facings and details. Advantage on a shawl is that it isn't so heavy to work on and carry about.

My mother knits artificial boobs for recent mastectomy patients, apparently much more comfortable on recent scars than anything available commercially. I'll have to tell her about penguin sweaters, she'd get a kick out of that.

What is a hero project? Something complicated that takes forever, so you feel like a hero when you finish?

Do you know about sweaters for penguins? If you run out of knitting projects, maybe you could make a few of those. If you haven't seen them, do an image search. It is horrible that they are needed, but the penguins do look adorable in them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penguin_sweater

I do wear the last few sweaters I made and they are NOT frumpy. But I don't need as many clothes as I could knit, so I am looking for hero projects. I don't care if it takes years. I don't need to knit for production, it's the process and the progress, not the quantity of final products that entertains me. And RATEing it up. My DH loves Stevie Nicks style, maybe I should go look at some old pictures of her stuff.

Krista, I think you are right, fewer repeats. Or a different, smaller pattern. What I like most about this one is the yarn choice and the edging, that could done onto something much simpler. Which would mean done sooner, a bonus. Maybe I will buy and study the pattern before ordering the yarn

T-Rex, thanks for asking your friend. Maybe if I finished it I could reward myself with some androngynous leather boots. Definite bad-assiness (love it) and yes, an Etsy pin. I am on a yarn SYC until I finish another project. It's a shawl too, actually the same Clapotis pattern your friend suggested in an outrageous sparkly yarn, for a black-tie event in June. That is a whole other WIWW post. But if I'm going to knit this on my trip, I need to decide. Cast on and get through a repeat so that I know I can do it without pain. It's a bad thing to be on a long plane trip with knitting that is too fussy or worse, no knitting at all.

OK, I asked my knitting nut friend what she thought. Here is her response. I hope it helps!

"I struggle with those shawls myself. I've not knit one and kept it, as to me they 'can' look very grandma-ish unless you combine it with something absolutely 'chic', like skinny jeans and a white t or some other fabulous outfit. You have to have something absolutely FAB and a swinger attitude to offset the grandma vibe. (Being short doesn't help either, I'm 5'4") The contrast is what makes it work. And in truth, I don't dress FAB every day. For day to day wear with that shawl, yeah, you'll grandma.

But it makes me wish for having one when I have that perfect chic outfit and feel awesome. A Spring/Summer shawl versus Winter.

For my own day to day, I go for shawls that are more geometric. My favorite pattern is this http://thecrookedstitchquiltsa.....potis-kal/

I have made a RIDICULOUS number of them and always get compliments. I use yarn that really stands out, it offsets the Chicago winter blues and looks great over dark colored coats.

My 2 cents. I love the artistry of those shawls...."

and....in a subsequent email she adds....

"The author talks about her love of theatricality, if she embraces that when wearing the shawl, she'll be golden. That tossed over a crisp white blouse, jeans and boots? LOVE.

Dammit. Now you made me want to knit one!"

I know I've already commented on this, but have to say again. Yes. I love it. I would wear it. I would use it as a starting point, and build an outfit around it.

I have a knitter friend who is *so* not frumpy. Would you like me to put her in touch with you, or ask her for her advice? She is in her 40's, I believe, and knits constantly when she isn't making jewelry. I think she could give you some good advice to go along with the good advice you have already received here.

As a knitter, I totally hear you and the other knitters who have chimed in on this thread. Knitted shawls are so beautiful and I would love to knit one but, in all honesty, I am the slowest knitter known to man and I would be 80 before I finished this type of shawl (I'm about to turn 40, just to give you context! ). I also do not see many people wear hand-knit shawls very often so I guess I assume they are automatically frumpy and "not trendy" because of that, but they are not. Every time I have worn my own knitting, I always get compliments. My mom makes hand-quilted jackets and she's a walking sensation whenever she wears one in public. So, while I think we may assume these handmade items are frumpy, so many people offer compliments when they're worn. I'm not sure what it all means - I'm just putting it out there!
I think Gaylene is right - it's all in how you wear it and what you wear it with. I clicked on your link and I think this shawl is too big as a finished product. While it looks great on the author in the pictures, if I saw it on her IRL, I would think that she was being swallowed by it; not to mention how impractical it is to wear a shawl that big on a daily basis or even occasionally! What about knitting it with fewer repeats so that it wasn't as big? Then I think it would work well with your planned outfits of a blouse/jeans/booties or over a sheath. The colorway of the yarn is gorgeous! If you keep your outfit simple, yet eclectic, I think this shawl would have many possibilities for you. I'll be following this thread to see what you ultimately decide!

Well, I have a friend who wears her hand-knitted items, including shawls, all the time--and she looks utterly fabulous and stylish. The other day she was wearing skinny jeans tucked into tall riding boots, a t-shirt, and this magnificent shawl pinned around her shoulders with an antique dagger-pin she brought home from Scotland. But I suspect it's her dramatic looks and personality that turn the outfit into something stylish, so maybe it's more about how you would feel when you wore the shawl...
Oh, it's so beautiful. I think the way to minimize the possibility of frumpiness is to wear it with other pieces that are so not frumpy. I can see it with tough looking, worn in jeans and boots, thrown over a plain white shirt or a strappy tank top.

I can also see it over it's opposite. A bodycon dress and heels, with sexy dangling earrings.

Or, something incorporating both these looks. Skinny jeans and a sexy, bare top with a high heeled boot. That would look good, too.

You may want to look for a shawl pin with a bit of bad-assiness. (Is that a word?) Nothing dainty or feminine. Maybe hammered metal, or something styled into an animal that can't be seen as frumpy, like a snake or a dragon. I've seen lots of terrific looking shawl pins on Etsy.

A few years ago, I knitted a beautiful shawl, in a rather expensive yarn, and ... I never had the guts to wear it outside the house. I wear it in the morning over my nightie to keep me warm, that's all. So, was it worth the effort and money? Not sure at all, a cardi could do the same job.

I agree with bj1111. I enjoy the process but rarely wear the product--the exception being cowls, scarves, ponchos and a miscellaneous top or two.

The shawl is gorgeous and I can see it styled the way you describe but I can't tell you how many times I've thrown on a shawl only to change before walking out the door.

As a knitter, i have worn about 2% of my final product because handmade (distinct from artisanmade) is so not my style and has a tendency to be harder to style as i get older.

This shawl really reminds me of something to go on top of a piano. It's a shame because it looks really fun to make and objectively, it is attractive as an art piece.
