I hardly ever shop online except for medical products but I find shipping and long distance to be things that just drive me absolutely crazy.

Even with a purse of the appropriate dimensions I have to stuff it full of all my stuff before I know whether it will work for me or not.

I always take shipping charges into account, especially if I think they're exorbitant, or I'm not sure the item will work and I'll have to mail it back to do a return. There's a tote bag I like that costs $16, and the shipping is $13! That seems ridiculous to me.

Hmm. The purchase(s) would both be bags so the fit isn't the issue; I guess it would be seeing the quality first-hand (they look fine in the pics). I'd probably like them. I'm just having a hard time getting over paying shipping that costs practically as much as the items themselves. That's my issue. And yet, they're at a good price now, finally. I don't know...probably better to pass, I'm thinking.

Ive spent SO much money on return shipping I could have a lot of new things I actually love, had I gone into the stores Trying hard to not buy online, at least for awhile....

I love to buy things online but I tend to stick to accessories. I LOVE Etsy for interesting necklaces for example. With clothes and even bags and shoes I am reluctant to buy them if I haven't seen them and tried them on - we don't generally have such liberal return policies here in Australia in our local stores as some of the rest of you seem to have. I'm not used to thinking about returning an item as an option unless it is faulty.

I do think about shipping costs when I buy but it isn't the deciding factor - I like to have unique things and for that you sometimes have to pay a bit extra so to me it is part of that.

I'm with Angela; living in Canada I have to consider shipping, taxes and duty as part of the cost if I order, so I'm much more tempted to order from the US if shipping is free; even if I will have to pay the return shipping, at least I am not paying twice.

I only buy on line if I can't get the item locally and I KNOW I will love it. I factor in shipping and duty before I buy, but it's not a major concern.

As someone who pays shipping ALL The TIME (and duty) I do consider it, especially if it puts the item in a threshold (300+) that makes me nervous.

I figure if I look hard enough, there will be a Canadian retailer or designer that I like.

And the returns are a huge, huge bother

I do think of shipping after I've had a few misses that keep needing to go back. My recent corduroy pants search has me out several shipping charges and with no pants :(
But I'd rather pay the $$ to have the opportunity to return. I have made MANY non returnable purchases on eBay and have to figure in the chance that it may not fit and I will have to eat the whole cost. Better to pay a minimal shipping charge than to have a discount priced item you can't use at all!

I guess I'm ticked that apparently there wouldn't be any discount if I were to order more than one bag (which I was considering doing). I can always ask them for a break...this is inventory from last year that they're clearly trying to move. Will report back on what they say, and if I decide to counteroffer.

Edited to add: Yep, Angie. I love the instant gratification of just seeing something and buying it. And the shopping's not that awful around here but for some people online would be the only option. And anyway, jeesh, it's a big charge. I haven't returned too many online orders (a coat from yoox.com I did recently--ten bucks, but that's not that much). 22 pounds is around $40, right? Times two, for two bags! I don't think I would go there...maybe for an $800 bag (which I can't even imagine buying at this point...but maybe someday...:-)

I found that I get very annoyed when I pay shipping and/or return costs on items I end up not keeping. For that reason, I am trying to stay away from ordering shoes on sites like 6pm unless I am absolutely sure they will fit; I payed shipping/return too many times now, and it feels like a such a waste. Maybe this is the wrong way to look at things but I know that psychologically this is how it works for me.

However, if I know I will definitely keep something, I don't worry about separating shipping from the overall cost of an item.

I'm a loner here. I'm generally not worried about shipping costs. It is what it is. If I love the item and I think it will work - I'll get it.

Granted, I'm not a frequent online shopper (other than Zappos). I bat for Team Store.

I think it makes total sense to consider the full amount paid for an item, considering shipping, sales tax, possible return shipping, etc. This is why Nordstrom, Zappos, and others who offer free shipping and returns in the US often get my business.

I am waivering on something I like (bag) because it seems like the shipping from the UK will be nearly the cost of the item. Assuming that if I were to order and receive it I decided to keep it, the bag's price has been greatly reduced from what's available both in Europe and on sites for the US market such as ASOS.com (where obviously, those charges are already going to be reflected in the price anyway).

Does everyone else get hung up on shipping (particularly those handling fees)? If you were only to consider the entire cost and not break it down and it turned out to be reasonable, would you go ahead and pull the trigger?

Heh, this is just one example of all my anxieties around shopping/spending money that I'm currently working with.

Of course, there's the risk of return, too. But I'd probably like the items enough.

It's fascinating as to how much psychology there is involved in purchasing. And not all of it making sense, in my case.
