Thanks Nemosmom! His recovery will take a while, so I still appreciate the support!

Joy, I’ve heard of people watching their own big surgeries. I’d be fascinated, and glad to enjoy the general anesthesia, but I guess some people are squeamish. By now I bet he’s using the crutches easily. It sounds like his apartment is much bigger than I picture a single guy in Japan living in. I hope he is doing well!

FashIntern, he found out that they do some things differently. For example he was not given a general anesthesia for the surgery and watched it. PT has been mostly massage to help with leg and foot swelling and being given crutches and some tips on going up steps on them, but not down. They are too much for his little apartment so using them is difficult.
I am glad that your dad is doing well. DH has the groin to heart method after a cardiac arrest about 20 years ago. They put in some stents.

Canada just posted some severe travel restrictions, including post travel Covid testing and quarantine (at traveller’s expense). I understand that you are planning on travelling to the US, but plan for extra time and $, and the possibility of getting stuck somewhere you might not want to be. Plus, there is the risk of exposure to the virus...

Thanks Cindysmith!

Joy, that turns out to be a very good point. We might not get to go, which will be very upsetting to my son. So far his school is still planned to start up again on Feb 22, and he has several major tests, etc that week. There is a minimum of 5 days quarantine for anyone who’s been in a high-risk area, which is how the US is, so it isn’t worth it to go. I haven’t broken it to him yet. I hope your son is doing well. With its aging population, I expected Japan to have a good system of in-home care; do they?

If you go, be sure that you can actually see your parents. They may be in quarantine, depending on the area. Also see if you and your son will have to be in quarantine to enter the US or to go back to Germany.

Thank you all again! Your comments are so helpful. I just went to the foreigners office (at 5:00 am in sub-freezing temps) to find out what happened to the application I filed a month ago. My son has school vacation the week after Valentine’s Day. We want to travel to the US, but can’t if our papers are not in order with that office. I expected to wait a couple hours, as per SOP, but instead found out they aren’t seeing anyone. No one but employees may enter at all. So I’ve emailed the application I filed around New Years to the copy shop, will pick it up when they open and take it to foreigners’ office to drop off hard copy before heading in to work. My son will be heartbroken if we can’t go, but it look like I might have to do that to him again.

Joy, the initial valve replacement when my son was a baby was open heart surgery. For this, they went up through his aorta from the groin.

Another late to this thread. My DH had open heart surgery and, among other things, a new valve. Will your dad need to have open heart surgery to replace this valve? That alone could be scary. My thoughts and prayers are with he, your mom, and you.

Thank you, all, for the comments. Each one is deeply appreciated. The case before him took longer than expected, so he had a wait and is in surgery right now. A nurse who used to scrub in on his cases when he was operating stopped by while they waited to say good morning and that she’d keep track of him. That makes me happy.

Unfrumped, thank you for the suggestions. I gave him a kitty shaped lap warmer 1 or 2 years ago, think it was premature. Maybe they need to pull it out for him soon. Mom said she was taking the Uniqlo jacket I sent her this fall—he wears his all the time too, so I hope they took it today. He will be in a step-down unit until he’s in the room where mom can join him, so if he tries to remove the IV (I don’t *think* he’s that far gone, but it’s been a long time), there will be adequate supervision to prevent that.

Joyce, the roads were apparently slushy and yucky, but not difficult for my BiL to drive on. I’m still glad he took them in!

ETA. The valve is in! Other doc is still closing up. Dad is in his late 80s, but Mom keeps his diet absolutely on point; up til Covid he was exercising a couple times a week, though I’m not sure how much he can do these days. I think/hope all that clean living is paying off and will give him a good recovery. Right now he’s headed for cardiac intensive care.

Sending thoughts and prayers for uneventful stay and good recovery.
Does he have a special soft “ throw” or similar that he uses at home? Pillow and case? Sometimes a familiar pattern and soft feel can make hospital bed seem more familiar. Lots of patients bring such items to hospital. Also favorite music.
For more advanced dementia, some patients can hold onto/ “ worry” with a toy stuffed animal ( dog for someone who has pet dog at home, kitty etc) to distract from pulling at IV. Did not sound like your dad is at that stage, though.

Suntiger, if all goes well and he passes his “test” the next morning, he will be able to go home then. Any other time my parents have had to go to the hospital, as happens as people age, he’s been able to take great comfort in familiar surroundings, having worked there for decades. But now many of the people he worked with are themselves retired, and I worry that he might not recognize where he is. Thanks for asking.

Angie, thank you. Your empathy helps. I wish your dad and family all the best. Have you been able to visit during the shut down?

Thanks Rachylou! Appreciate you commenting.
