My mom and I used to make regular doll clothes, but not Barbie clothes. I never have cared much about Barbie, and the clothes are teeny tiny.

Xtabay: Does anyone make Barbie outfits these days??? Back in the day we used to love to make doll clothes, especially when they would match our own home-sewn outfit. But I wonder if this is still a popular hobby.

Angie: Yes, this has been my hope. I am an experienced home seamstress and know that professionals really work every bit of fabric out of the whole cloth. Still, when I look at the way some garments are fabricated they look like there would be leftover pieces.

L'Abeille: Yes, my daughter went on an SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) journey and she was known to make very interesting medieval-looking garments that she wore to events.

Actually as I recall from eons ago when I used to sew, the weird wide-and-long shape at the top of the sleeve piece, required to accommodate both the shoulder and underarm, was always the hardest pattern piece to fit on the fabric with any efficiency. I can imagine that the cold-shoulder modification could lead to less fabric wastage overall.

Although I hope this doesn't bring a return to medieval styles with sleeveless tabards and separate laced-on sleeves! (Speaking as an ignorant layperson whose daughters dabble in period clothing.)

Sheila, there aren't any "cut-outs", because that's not the way the patterns work when you're making the garments. The pieces of the pattern are put onto a lay and there is minimum waste like with any other style. It's NOT like a donut with a hole cut out of it.

Binkie, is dead right.

I suspect that they will show up as parts of applicay designs next season. Really, I hope that the polyester is returned to fuel oil.

Binkie I think you are right...my musing was half in jest, half-serious. But there are so many examples of this style lately that I started wondering about 'where does all that fabric go'??? Haha. Fabric Heaven. Maybe.

I bet that their technology is so advanced that the computers can lay out the pattern pieces for minimal wastage. As in, they lay out sleeve pieces that are designed not to have to "cut out" the shoulder as a second step. And then fit other pattern pieces into that area. At least for mass production factories maybe?

...what the heck do garment manufacturers do with all the scraps from the 'cold shoulder' cutouts? I know some of these are pieced, so most likely no fabric is wasted, but for others??? Is it recycled? Sold to quiltmakers?
