Another "Ditto Angie"
I'm learning to buy less and spend more for quality and fit. This is sometimes hard when something rather nice but not perfect is greatly discounted. I'm loving beautiful and beautiful feeling fabrics in everything from coats to undies and socks.

I will spend more for a good fit and nice fabric/construction. Now, I don't care if something is silk, but I like something that feels quality in the details. For me having a good quality fabric and straight seems that won't pucker, ect is important to me. If it fits well and washes and wears well I will wear it into the ground--- one flaw the gets in the way of the comfort or makes it obviously unflattering means that it will pretty much never be worn. I am one of those ladies that would rather wear the same 5 things everyday than wear something that bugs me in any way.

I am also one of those ladies that can wear a pair of jeans into the ground in a year unless I have 6 pairs or so in rotation. Cheap jeans only last a couple of washes to a couple of months with me because of the aforementioned finickiness. I generally am prepared to spend 50-75 bucks on jeans unless my faves are on sale. I have never tried premium denim because I have never been happy with the fit on a pair, but always wonder if they are worth it. I can find tough, flattering, comfortable jeans that don't bag out for 50 bucks-- which would only make premium denim worth it if it fit just as well off the rack or lasted more than 3 years with 3x a week wear.

I do have limits and am wililng to pay more for a nice jacket than I am for a t-shirt. However, I do find that for myself, there is a significant difference between $5-10 t shirts and 25-30 dollar t-shirts and I wear them enough and am hard enough to fit well that it makes it worth it to me. Much more important than having three that don't. For more than that they better wear like iron.

I'm ok with having only 7-10 tops and a few layering pieces and am happier with that than being able to try out new things and trends.

As committed to it as I am, there are some things that are a serious debate despite the superior quality. Despite good-fitting underwear being important to me, if my faves are 15 bucks a pair --- that still works out to an initial investment of 270 bucks or 90 dollars a year-- and that is if they can survive weekly washing for 3 years.

I also can't tell you how much I would spend on workwear, blazers, sweaters, or handbags because I don't own any. Either I don't have the occasions to justify the quality/expense, or I have been reluctant to try/invest because of my inexperience.

I will spend more on items I am confident about choosing, and less on other things.
Also more on items that will last and less on other things (knitwear as you've said!).

So I have been happy on splashing out on (for example):
Black tall boots (took me a long time and lots of YLF input)
Bras (I have an excellent shop I go to run by someone who seriously knows about bras. I have spent more there than ever in my life before and don't begrudge a penny...)
A winter coat (I knew what I wanted from a winter coat and looked until I found it)

So often, though, I am not sure what I am looking for, and if I am going to end up with a less-than-stellar piece anyway I may as well pay less money for it.

I aspire to having a small functional wardrobe made up of killer items that are good, lasting quality. As Angie said in a thread of mine, though, it takes time and funds to achieve this and I'm not sure how long it'll take for me.

Fascinating!

I am most intrigued by Rae's answer, since basics are the things I'm *most* inclined to spend for.

Also, I am interested in the large number of people who include denim among their "won't spend for" items. As someone who can't wear denim to work, I'm probably not a heavy wearer of jeans. But I have found premium denim to be so very superior to the alternative that I can't go back.

I have to amend my answer to include spending on workout gear - my triathlon suit, running shoes, etc all were over $100, but even they were somewhat discounted for being last season's etc. It's fair to say that I will not pay full price for anything if I don't absolutely have to.

I am tempted to say I won't spend more for anything! I am a bargain hunter and cheapskate, it is true. I will spend a bit more for things that fit amazingly well - especially pants and dresses as those are the things I have the most trouble with. I will also occasionally spend more on a brand that I know is high quality and will last forever - but usually that's things like winter coats or gear from someplace like Lands' End or Lucy, not the high-fashion brands a lot of people splurge with.

I won't spend a lot on things I don't wear much, like formal wear, or things that I can often find at a discount. Out of necessity I am often 'forced' to spend more on shoes, but most everything else I regularly wear/need I can eventually find on sale or at the thrift store.

Jeans, handbags and shoes are my big ticket items. The difference in materials have me stuck on pricey items. I'm not a fan of spending a lot on my layering basics; t-shirts or tank tops. I also prefer to spend less money on shorts, skirts and sandals since they are worn most often in the summer months only for me which is a short season.

More for:

Jeans - I just can't get enough premium jeans (its kind of an addiction)
Handbags - love the look and feel of a quality handbag that I know I am going to enjoy for the rest of my life.
Bras - discovering the right fitting bra a few years ago, changed my life! :)
Workout shoes
Boots - love!

Less for:

Underwear
knits
shoes - it isn't hard for me to find a comfortable shoe, so I can indulge in less expensive ones and have a lot of fun!
Dresses - I almost never wear them, so unless it is for a special occassion, my dresses (especially summer) come from Target or Old Navy.
Belts - I'd like to invest in a couple of good belts - but I struggle with how to wear them - probably because I can't find my waist - and so I usually am reluctant to spend a whole lof of money on them!

I, like some of the others - love the look of a high-low mix. So . . . my spending habits work out nicely for my style!

I will spend on shoes, jeans, nice blouses, bras, and some dresses

I try to not spend as much on knitwear, casual summer dresses (usually they are knit), and workout wear (other than shoes), oh, and jewelry. I buy less expensive costume jewelry. I'm also not a big splurger on bags, but try to find a nice quality at a decent price.

I guess for me it boils down to spending on the items that I find more difficult to find that fit well and are comfortable. For every shoe I buy, I've tried on 20 that hurt... so when I find the one that is comfy, I buy it. Other items that always seem to be in abundant supply are the one's I don't feel the need to be as spendy on.

Oh, absolutely. I'll often stretch my budget for beautiful shoes, although I do own and wear some relatively cheap ones, too (like my go-to black converse). A pair of statement shoes can turn a pair of jeans and a fitted tee shirt from blah to cool.

I don't own lots of handbags, but if I was into that sort of thing, I'd spend more there, too. The problem is, I'd rather make do with my one good handbag and spend the extra on nice shoes!

As for clothing, I aim for nice quality and I don't tend to buy cheap (I find bargain hunting stressful), but I generally don't spend a ton, either. Also I don't own that many clothes. But once in a while I'll splurge on something I know will last a long time. For example, a while back I spent quite a bit on a couple of plain, fitted tee shirts, which I'm sure seems bizarre to many of you. But I got one of these tees nine years ago when I was pregnant, and the darn thing is still going strong. It stretches way out of shape and snaps back, it hasn't gone all fuzzy, and it's still a very deep black (most black tees fade out to gray). It looks nearly new. So when I ran across the same brand recently, I knew that (for my wardrobe at least) they would be worth the money. The tee shirts have a lovely, flattering shape and I'm confident they will last me years.

Unfortunately I've upped the ante on most categories of clothing and accessories (I'm thinking it's as much an age thing as it is a YLF thing), but I'm always open to a bargain in any category.

I still refuse to pay more for underwear. I've found a certain type of Calvin Klein bra works for me (thanks Nordstrom's fitting!), so I just get them on sale or if they show up at Marshalls. I only buy my Jockey undies when on a good sale.

I refuse to pay more for yoga wear. Even though these items work their little hearts out, I prefer to replace them in 6 months or so. So, no Lululemon for me

More for shoes, less for handbags
More for cardigans, less for coats
More for jeans/skirts, less for jersey tops
More for workout gear, less for bras & knickers.

Reasoning: I know a good shoe and I care about looks and comfort and heel height etc. A bag is just a splash of colour that will get bashed around, and I like to rotate, so cheapies fill the need.

The rare truly flattering, silky feeling cardigans I've got are worth a lot to me. I don't buy cardigans that feel rough or don't conform to my body perfectly. Coats are primarily a fashion item and only secondarily for warmth here - they are handy as an extra layer but not strictly necessary. Expensive ones in flattering shapes would cost hundreds (at least) so I'm content with cheap(er) cute coats.

Jeans and skirts are hard to find (that are the right colour, fit and fabric) so if I find what I want I'll splurge. Jersey tops will wear out and are much easier to find so I'm not willing to pay through my nose.

Expensive workout gear does make me look better, covering cellulite, firming, providing better figure-flattery design-wise; which helps motivate me to exercise. It also means I'm not embarrassed to be seen exercising. And it also lasts me longer, resisting pilling etc.

I used to buy expensive bras but they always wore out and once I found flattering bras at Kmart that worked for me, there was no going back. You should change your bras every few months anyway, so why spend $$$?

Will not for:
2. Handbags
3. Tops, especially sweaters

I will spend more for shoes (must be pretty and comfortable, always), bags, camisoles and bras. And winter coats. As long as the fundamentals are good quality, you can get away with less-expensive other items.

I will spend more or not, depending on the quality, for dresses, jackets, jewelry, pants or tops. I like the mix of cheap *and* the expensive for these items, particularly since they rotate fast in my closet.

I will not spend more for jeans, cardigans, socks, t-shirts, scarves, or gloves. I wear jeans at most twice a week, and only during the cooler months; the ones from Old Navy or Gap are all I need for now. While a cashmere or silk cardigan is nice, I am all about the color and shape more than the fabrication; I can find a cardigan workhorse at an outlet store just as easily as I can find one at Nordies. The others I buy everywhere, and in multiple quantities; I can't justify spending a fortune on any of them.
