'Honesty will set you free' is a favourite adage of mine!

DH is so fearful of needles, he had been ignoring getting routine bloodwork after regular check-ups - constantly 'misplacing' the paperwork and then 'forgetting' to make an appointment.

We move, and after 2 years get accepted by a health clinic. Blood work is ordered. He confesses his fear. The nurse has him recline, look away, and uses a very small gauge needle to draw the blood. DH said it felt like a misquito bite, then nothing. Took a bit of time, though. DS #2 who just finished nursing volunteered that the gauge used on DH is considered a paediatric needle! LOL!

Mama, you are not alone. I had so much work done last year that I can hardly bear the thought of the routine cleaning and check-up I have coming up. Lots of good strategies provided above, though...

I'm glad the dentist was so lovely, and that you let yourself cry. I don't remember the science now, but crying has a hormonal or chemical connection.

My husband had something similar happen with a back tooth - first a root canal, then a crown, and finally, so much tooth loss that a new crown couldn't be fitted so they pulled a tooth and put in an implant. Once the procedure was done, and he had healed, he had no problems with eating.

Echoing what so many people have said here: Letting the dentist (or any medical personnel, really) know that you have fear, or have had bad experiences in the past, can feel so much better than trying to hold back the emotions you're feeling and the reactions you're having. Of course, the healthcare provider then has to do their part and actually be supportive and helpful. I have a lot of anxiety around anything medical or healthcare related - a routine physical at the doctor or a basic dental cleaning exhausts me to the point where I have to nap for the rest of the day - and I've now made it a point to make sure *every* *single* *person* who works with me knows my history and that I have feelings about it.

BrieN you know i'd never thought of it that way.
No wonder i'm all emotional about dentistry, it sums up so many things in my life about childhood, depression, self image etc etc

thank you so much, you've given me the starting point to work on these things.

I am sorry to hear how hard it is for you to go to the dentist, both because of direct associations and also with indirect ones. I hope I'm not over-thinking your post, but as you mention, these procedures can conjure up a lot of negative emotions (although the majority of friends my age and I have had many of these major dental procedures). And for some reason it can conjure up those childhood feelings when your parents neglected to care for this aspect of your well being. Tears are normal with all that emotion! But after that, would you consider giving yourself a moment to reflect that you are taking care of yourself now. Maybe mix into that stew of emotion some pride in that you are doing what needs to be done. Give that little child version of you a virtual hug, give that version of you that was depressed a hug, and give your current self a hug and a lot of credit.

Will you eventually be fitted with an implant or other similar?

I have cried at the dentist and I think I scared him.....I have moved a lot and was missing appointments as I dreaded telling the 'I'm scared' story. Anyway, I desperately needed some work, I told the new dentist I was scared and why, and she sedated me. Best thing ever. It kind of reset my fear, as in I don't need sedation unless they do some real serious drilling.

I had moved yet again and found another dentist last year, he told me my teeth were great and to relax, which was kind of nice. I think finding someone who understands is helpful. In Canada dentists are everywhere so you can easily move on if you are not compatible.

Spouse of dentist here. It's okay to be afraid and say so -- but the thing that really upsets him is when people show up for the first time and say to his face "I hate dentists." Because he's a person with feelings too.

Once you make a practice of going in you will start eliminating the pain points in your mouth, and you can get to a point where you have a healthy and beautiful smile.

And be sure you're teaching your children the right lessons about taking care of their dental health.

I am a big old crybaby and not afraid to say it or to show it. Emotions become to much and I have no words so I have to cry. It used to be hard because I learned not to cry in the Army. Now it is better It releases all of the pressure I feel inside.

Isabel this is amazing self awareness "
What has worked the best for me with needle phobia is to accept that
that's the way I am and go from there. I just tell the nurse that I have
a phobia of needles, that I'm working on practical solutions, and no
one has ever made me feel bad.

Well, I cried. I cried on the way there and I cried there even though i thought i'd be ok.
the dentist was really lovely though and although i didn't have any actual treatment - she was doing a check of what needs doing - I will need a lot of treatment and a lot more than i ever thought.
I'm really really sad that one of my teeth that had a root canal is beyond any help now and will have to be removed. it won't be visible (unless i yawn like a hippo or laugh and throw my head back with my mouth open!!) and won't bother me too much when i eat (well, i can adapt) but i feel very ashamed about it...not exactly an attractive feature to have.
i had really bad depression a few years back and stopped looking after myself - guess i'm paying the price in many ways now My parents weren't very involved in our lives and we were never taught/made to brush our teeth...again, i'm paying the price now.
oh well, there are many many worse things in life than having one tooth less. At least i can still walk, run, play, knit, sew etc etc
i'm grateful for easy access to dentists albeit with a very expensive price tag. After all, in many countries dental treatment is simply not available.

RIP tooth

I fully empathize with you. Had a dental crown prep 2 weeks ago and am suffering a bit of TMJ. It always happens when I have to keep my mouth open for an extended amount of time. It has been 2 weeks and the pain has greatly diminished. In the end I know that if I put off going then I will have to deal with something more severe. Hope your appointment went well!

The sound of the new dentist tools, the whine, really hurt my soul. Make me cringe in a way I never used to. Is there a focus for your fear like that? I try meditative practices. Instead of trying to block the feeling and sound, I try to pay attention to it calmly. To ride the feeling just observing...

I'm repeating everything Ledonna said because it's true and it was said so sweetly.
Maybe trying to hold it in is just making you feel more tense and alone with your problem?
Maybe not telling the dentist is withholding information that would help him/her do a better job?
What has worked the best for me with needle phobia is to accept that that's the way I am and go from there. I just tell the nurse that I have a phobia of needles, that I'm working on practical solutions, and no one has ever made me feel bad.
My blood pressure would rocket at appointments because of anxiety about needles. After a few less successful experiments I've found that closing my eyes before I see the needle makes a huge difference. I also try to focus my attention on the arm that isn't getting the treatment.

Oh no, just let it all out and don't worry about it, the dentist understands especially because it seems many people share your phobia. I am the odd ball that loves going to the dentist to have my teeth cleaned. However, I am fortunate that other than a filling, I haven't had to have any major dental work.

Not a dentist story but a medical one...many years ago whenever I had to have blood drawn every year I would always pass out. I would sit there in the chair and truly faint. It was awful. Then one year I told the tech person about it...I said I always pass out. He was really nice and said "why don't you lie down while we do it"...and for the first time I did not pass out and I never did again.

So definitely tell the dentist you are scared...

Have you sought treatment for your phobia? I'm sure some dentists are able to offer sedation or even hypnotherapy for nervous patients, so please mention your fears beforehand.

If it's any help, whenever I am dreading something, I remind myself that in x number of minutes/hours/days this will all be over, and I will be feeling better. This usually takes the edge off a little.

I am not a fan of the dentist. But like Ledonna I have found letting the dentist know that I am terrified of dentists helps. DH is worse than me. I am so impressed with dentists and how compassionate they can be. I had some horrible ones when I was a child.
Go ahead and cry if you need to. You won't be the first. I have.

Oh no ! Let me tell you something. You can cry as much as you want. Let the Dentist know that you are scared. I guarantee that it will help. Give yourself permission to be alright with how you feel. I will keep you in my prayers.
