Regarding the 'maybe' items, I try to wear them during that week and if for some reason I prefer to wear something else or it isn't quite right, it helps me to get rid of it.
Another thing is that I've started logging all of my clothes etc into a wardrobe app and it helps me so much to see everything grouped together (and realise I definitely do not need more black garments).

One more thing the last time I did a big cleanout, I really edited the tshirts/tank tops, I had you know the souvenir type, etc. I realized I only need 2 weeks worth of them, same for pajama and knit pants that I wear around the house.
I tended to buy them on sale just because and stopped that.

I just found this on another site and copied it:

1. Does the item fit?

2. Do I like the way I look in
it?

3. Do I like the way I FEEL in
it?

4. Have I worn it at any time
in the last couple of years (or longer)?

5. Does the item look dated?

6. Is this item simply taking
up space in the closet?

7. What are the chances of me
wearing this again?

8. Would I buy this piece again
if I had the opportunity?

I like these rules, I go buy the 2years and out usually, but hold on the black dresses and pants

Ooh - I like the black trash bag idea. I will have to try it! Right now, I just have a half-hearted pile in the corner of my room that I could go through at any moment...

What Janet said. When I did my big cull I broke things down into categories so I gathered all my jackets together & put them in like piles - blazers, moto etc. That way I could see how many of each I had. In every category of clothing there always seemed to be some pieces I would never choose to wear. When I realised I had more than I needed without these unworn pieces it was easy to let them go.

My problem (well, one of them) is I always say to myself something along the lines of "if I keep these, I can do this look" - even if the look is not with the realm of my target style.

I'm trying to train myself to ask myself, "does this belong to my target style?"...

Given what you said, I would edit but then put the items edited into a holding pile. Don't just let yourself go through the holding pile when making outfits. If you desperately need something, and you know exactly what it is, rescue it.

After a month, anything you haven't reachd for, I would let go.

I think this process reduced the stress of the edit so you don't fret over letting go a lynchpin in your wardrobe (but one that needs replacing if it was culled), and it gives you confidence over time in your choices to let go.

I have learned that I need a "cooling" off period when I have trouble letting go. In fact, I went to Bed ,Bath and Beyond and got some bags and packed away clothes that I don't wear much to see if I can do without them.

I also decided to do my own version of the "common wardrobe" a la the vivienne files. I started off with a basic set of pieces that everything else works off of. And then I am going to add in 4 pieces at a time to see how they work.

http://theviviennefiles.blogsp.....n+wardrobe

The khakis don't work for me, do I put in black ponte pants and navy ones along with three jean silhouettes. I am also going to only wear four of my blazers for now ( I have like 12 !). Some blazers will be designated for Spring only. That way I get to wear them, but each will have its time. That way I don't have to give them up.

It is always a process. Always . : )

Someone recently mentioned an interesting technique for culling and that is to divide your items into 3 categories- the pieces that you love, the basics that you need in order to wear the things you love (to make complete outfits), and the things that are just 'meh.' Then evaluate how many of each that you have. Do you have enough loved pieces and basics to make a sufficient number of outfits? If so, you might be ready to let go of all or at least some of the so-so stuff that doesn't make you feel fab.

Good luck!

I've been editing almost weekly for months. Do an initial pass through of each catagory (don't stress yourself out by doing it all at once!) then a second closer look. I let things by the 1st time that didn't make it through the second time because I had a clear head and keener eye. enjoy the stress reduction at the end!

My advice has two parts: 1.) do *not* go through your pile "one last time", and 2.) as soon as that pile is made, put it in a BLACK trash bag and put it in the trunk of your car. The next time you're out, drop it off to charity without opening the bag.

Why a black trash bag? I learned this trick when my son was little and I would have a charity donation ready for truck pickup on my front porch -- often toys he hadn't touched for several years. When I used white kitchen trash bags, he would invariable spot something through the plastic and decide he still "needed" it.

Black trash bags eliminate this temptation.

This is always overwhelming for me even though I don't have a big wardrobe. Did you see the vivenne files lately?

One post I found from Angie:

http://youlookfab.com/2012/08/.....t-editing/

FYI - on google type in the following

Site:youlookfab.com clothes edit

Then you will find more posts. If you use quotes around a word that means you are looking for that exact word. I read about this trick a while ago so hope it helps someone else.

One thing that helps me a lot is to tackle the project one item type at a time. For instance, I dragged every single pair of footwear I own out of the closet and spread them all out where I could see everything I had all at once, and then go from there. It helped me see that even though I had, say, five pairs of tall boots, only one of them is practical for bad weather, and all but one pair are more than four years old. And one pair I simply don't enjoy wearing.

I do the same for skirts, dresses, tops, sweaters, tees, jeans, pants... and don't just go through them IN the closet -- pull them all out and spread them out over your bed or wherever you have good light and space to see and assess everything. This helps you to evaluate color, condition, etc. For me, this process breaks the task into smaller, more manageable pieces and helps you see where you may have excess and where you have gaps.

Good luck! Post pics and let us know how it goes. I love editing.

I desperately need to edit my wardrobe. I have the most difficulty with getting rid of shoes and quality pieces even if they don't work for me. My plan is to mercilessly cull...my problem is then I always feel the need to go through the cull pile "one last time". I never create outfits as I go, which I probably should. I may need another cup of coffee for this.
