Well, first: plaid is not a trend to me. Plaid comes around every fall, and one of those American designers (Tommy, Ralph, Eddie Bauer, LLBean, etc) is always doing plaid for spring/summer. The lumbersexual look is a thing now, too; just look at my husband's hipster nephews and their friends LOL It's also a year round thing in Scotland, isn't it?

Now that I've said that, plaid is one of those things that I love to look at but never seem to hold onto for very long because it just doesn't seem to fit in with my overall aesthetic. If you figure out how to make plaid work for you, please share because I'm lost :-/

Sometimes we love the idea of something - even love seeing the item hang in our closets! - but don't feel right or fab wearing the item. This happens with some of my clients. Maybe plaid is this for you?

I think of what you showed the black watch pants might be the easiest and the most likely to get worn. They can look like a “false plain” from further away, and you could even happily mix them with the jacket you already have I would think. And I agree with La P that they would look great with berries.
The dress is really cute but maybe too cutesy for you??

I looove plaid but it is tricky to find just the right one. Taking into account what I remember of your wardrobe, I'm thinking something muted and cozy but not dark. Maybe an ivory/grey windowpane, or something like this: https://www.backcountry.com/pa.....eve-womens (Pic of the one that caught my eye, but I actually think the two purple-y colours they have might work for you too).

Of course, that's if you want to channel a cozy/rustic vibe. Plaid can also go edgy/punk. For that I tend to think buffalo plaid and Stewart tartans, both of which are a bit louder...

And I bet black watch would look great with your berry capsule!

I want your bomber and the coats. I have 3 plaid coats because they get super infrequent wear & I can’t bear to part.
I think plaids could work well for you. They’re interesting. You can choose scale & colors you feel good in.

You may need to use plaids that are neutral colors like Angie's first example. I think your plaid jacket would look good with the second find, the window pane check. Of course you would not wear pajamas out.

#5 and 6 may also work with your jacket, although they may be too short.

I can relate, Fashintern, so this is how I deal with plaid. Maybe some of it would work for you? Large scale plaids and/or colorful ones look too busy or overwhelming near my face. So if I wear them, I choose trousers in the patterns and a “calmer” top and topper. When I choose toppers in plaid, I wear more “feminine” cut blazers or jackets to soften the look, otherwise it looks too much. Like peplum. Also adding a softer, solid color scarf “calms down” the overall impression. I use plaid sometimes in smaller doses in accessories, like smaller scarves or gloves. Just ordered a pair of gloves today, btw. A little plaid addition without being too loud.

My first thought was don’t force it, and skip this trend, but, then I noticed that you wrote, “I'm trying to think of ways to ride the plaid wave.” So, for me, outerwear or toppers can be a good way to incorporate something fun/trendy, because you can take it off inside. What about plaid rain boots? Or, you could look for plaids in your berry tones. I like the idea of tights, too- something inexpensive, that allows you to enjoy the trend.

I'm with Rachy. If you like the look (in theory) but worry that it will feel obscurely wrong or "too much" on you, start with a version that is muted, tone on tone, and preferably a small scale check or plaid. No bold graphics like houndstooth, window pane crops, etc.

I had a similar thought as rachylou. If plaids often feel too "loud" to you, look for a plaid with low value contrast and tonal color combinations. The pj shorts look very much in your wheelhouse with those berry colors. The jacket seems like more of a wildcard. Do you wear the jacket often? I feel like an outfit creation session with the plaid jacket could yield a lot of insights about what makes an outfit with plaid feel right (or not) to you.

I think for you ... muted plaids. Not graphic plaids, like the blue and white window-pane wide crop pants. Perhaps a blue and black buffalo check...

Do you love to look at plaid, or do you love wear plaid? I find plaid is a pattern I really like --on napkins, kitchen towels, pillows, and other people's clothing. But I don't like to wear it out and about, on my own body. Stripes are the same way --I have striped curtains and furniture and pillows, but no striped clothing.

That's just it--I do love it. Or I think I do anyway, until it's in my closet.

I need to figure out how to tell if I'll still love it in the morning, before I take it home.

None of the items in my first comment were chosen because "I've gotta add plaid"; they are all things that appealed to me, and when I think back over the recent year with a plaid-seeking filter, I realize that I've been drawn to it numerous times.

Perhaps I should re-title this post to be about a capsule, like Suz and Opaline's recent "color" posts.

If you don’t feel it ,why force it?There are other patterns that you might love better.Plaid is such a wide term and encompasses many colour and check variations so may be you just haven’t met the one yet.l love plaid but I don’t love them all and I am very fussy about the colour mix .

I am not one to go chasing after trends/fads, and cannot imagine trying to force something into my wardrobe because it's "in," but this plaid thing.... I have a strange relationship with plaid; I really like it--on other
people, mannequins, and hangers. But once I put it on me, it often feels too big and obnoxious. I'm trying to think of ways to ride the plaid wave without ditching out because it turned out that the plaid I bought doesn't feel like me. I don't want to repeat a past pattern--buying a piece that I think will be "fun" and then leaving it in my closet.

The two items in finds are the only two plaid items in my wardrobe right now--a jacket and pajama shorts. I will put Finds I've considered buying recently that turned out to be plaid in the comments, so as not to mix things up.

Some items I'm thinking of adding in plaid are a waterproof jacket/rain coat in plaid, pants in watch plaid, and just maybe this T-neck that sucked me into a store the other day. I might also go looking for tone-on-tone plaid tights, maybe in black. There's also this adorable made-in-Berlin dress that's close to my price because it's from last season. It's a size that I'd like to be, but clearly doesn't fit now.

I want to buy things that are locally made. The dress counts, of course. The T-neck is from Italy.

Those of you who "know" me on here, what do you think? What plaids would work well for me?
