I think this is such a good, interesting question. One thing, I think it helps to do a visual review of fashion history throughout the ages. Know where things are coming from. 10 years back, I think people tend to feel a look is just old. 20 years back and more, style elements become history - ripe for nostalgia and discovery by a new generation.

Wearability has a lot to do with which trends stick.

Things shown in magazines and on the runway... I personally think are quite aways into a trend's development arc. It takes time to put things into first run production and then to ramp up.

Fads are seasonal, 1-2 years at best. Like Christmas toys. Trends last several years...

Also, the internet is kind of its own universe. You have internet trends, print trends, local in the street trends.

Finally, what else is going on in the world has an impact. New technologies, changes in the way people work and live, etc. Effects what people need to wear. I joke, but I think hipsters like myself, admittedly, wear so much denim because of the permaculture backyard farming and DIY pallet furniture...

I think almost anything you really love can be worn over multiple seasons. The arc lasts a while, and if you love something, jump on it early, so you will get more wear out of it. But either buy less and higher quality, or more but less expensive versions if you don't think it will last long. Figure out your clothing budget, and how long you need the item to last. Also, if something is very distinctive, will you tire of it too soon?

Others who know way more than me, please chime in.

Hi
I am Elena from Romania, I like to dress chic and creative but just recently I have begun to learn what are fashion trends and how they are established :)

I would like to know.. as there are things I couldnt find out on the internet.. how do I know what clothes or shoes, bags from the last season are wearable in the current season?

How do I know what apparel pieces and accessories from the current season are a short-term trend and what apparel pieces and accessories are a long-term trend?

And I understood that the trends are set following a socio-cultural analysis carried on by trendsetting agencies, the color of the season is established by the color institutes from around the world, but how there are established the tailorings or the material prints, for example: the blouses or the dresses bare shoulders or with peplum, the sequins, the floral prints or stripes, denim blouses, dresses or coveralls, etc.

Thank you for any response,
Elena
