While I was building my wardrobe initially (for, like, 2 years) I kept a written list with me all the time and stuck to it pretty rigidly. Since I have my core more or less in place now (even though it needs to be upgraded), I find purchasing one or two items a month helps me update without having to spend a lot of $$ all at once. For example, I'd rather wear my one pair of skinny jeans and one pair of slim black pants until they need to be replaced than have 12 pairs of jeans/slacks in my closet that I don't wear. I always want to overhaul my warsrobe each season. And I have four seasons! I like the idea to create a collage of items that you want and check in to see which one's you like best. Also why not purchase just one or two items that fill a need. Perhaps you need a new blazer, pick up one in the style you like that's in stores now and wear it often. Then if you itch for something new, add one new item. If you slowly add items, you will be very selective in what you purchase. Also one in and one out is key here. In order to decide what the top priorities should be, try putting pictures of your wishlist items in a collage. As you look at it each day, you'll notice you are being drawn to some things more than others. Those are your top priorities. If you you don't find yourself looking at certain items anymore, those pictures can be removed and replaced with others. Soon you will have a good inspiration board and your wants prioritized.
