Not at all dumpy, but the trousers do look like they're having issues. I wonder if silk thermals would make a difference - or are you already wearing silk?

I will admit the sweater doesn't do it for me either. Color is ok to me, but the thinness of the stripes and the lightweight nature of the sweater... I would like to see a sweater with more "heft" on you, less stretch, esp. in winter.

...heh, it occurs to me I want to see heftier sweaters on everyone at the moment...

Here I am totally projecting my own issues, so feel free to ignore if you have no problem here. But the way I see it, you are long-legged and short-waisted, with a large bust. So yeah, beside the clashing necklines everyone is referring to, I see a "problem" (meaning it would be for me, perhaps not for you) with the light-colored sweater (white expands), with stripes horizontal across a larger bust, making it appear even bigger. And then, your pretty waist is lost due to the high-waisted pants as well as slight bulk of the sweater, so really it gives the effect of an even larger bust, IYKWIM. A dark, solid turtleneck or other blouse without the striped sweater would have mitigated this to a large degree. You are slim-hipped and your legs are long and lovely and otherwise, I think you can rock those trousers.

(edited to add that I'm not sure if you were directly going for an Angie-inspired look...but isn't it frustrating that she can pull off these amazing, supermod looks that just Do. Not. Work.--or work in the same way--on certain other body types? Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgggggggggh. :(

In any case, the only way you could really look bad would be to go around with a bag over your head, denying the world your beautiful smile. (That's probably the clumsiest compliment you'll ever get, but I mean it...you are radiant. Good on you for posting a less-than-perfect look, too.)

Goodness, even a less-than-fab outfit can't dampen that fantastic smile of yours. You are a gorgeous creature - you just radiate with a positive energy, so don't lose hope. I like the aim of your experiement...I agree with Angie and others that the material of your long underwear might need tweeking. I find success with snug silk underwear or the like. You CAN be warm AND fashionable so keep trying! I love seeing your WIWs, even what you consider to be unsuccessful ones, because I always learn something, and I enjoy seeing your pretty face!

Day Vies, I wonder whether you have the correct long underwear? I wear extremely thin and warm thermals that I barely notice under clothes. I do not like to wear thick thermals because they bunch under my clothing - just like you're having that problem

I agree the necklines don't work well together, but I am determined to figure out how to layer in a way that's flattering to me when the windchill is subzero.

Ah well, I agree it is not your best (since we are totally spoiled by your fab style), but we all have those days. Your beautiful smile saves it, that's for sure. Cold protection over looks, what can we do? A girl gotta do what a girl gotta do:)

It is mostly the cling on the pants and the two necklines. A button down under the sweater would have looked better IMO. About the pants, static is a b^&ch, nothing we can do about that.

Kudos, DV, for posting a look that didn't thrill you. We can learn a lot by doing so, but sometimes I just want to post only my best, and I miss out on learning and refining a look, and from the opportunity to remind others that we all have those outfits.

I think the pants will be far easier to style in warmer weather. I have some cycling gear, and I've layered my slick tights under things in the past. Something with that texture might allow the pant material to still slide over your legs.

What about a relaxed, slightly oversized shirt with these? Perhaps in a semi-tuck?

I TOTALLY know what you mean. These pants are awesome, and you will create other fab outfits with them. But I agree that the necklines of the sweaters and the lightness of the top sweater throw it off a bit. I also think you might not have felt fab anyway...I know for me, when I have layered my thermals under a whole bunch of other layers, I am glad to feel so warm, but I also feel a bit like I am wearing gear, if you know what I mean. And wow, that is a bunchy feeling.

Also I'm finding layering trickier than I thought. I am trying to use more items across seasons but then find the sweater that fits well by itself doesn't layer or a blouse bunches or something.

DV - we have a very similar body type, and to my eye, what is throwing you off is the competition of the neckline of the turtleneck and the sweater you are wearing over it. The pants are fine and are a flattering style, I just think a different set of tops would work. Rute's suggestion of a V-neck and Adelfa's suggestion of pants that hit a little lower are good ones. I think you could revisit this again - don't give up! You are gorgeous!

It was really cold here on Friday which is when I wore this outfit. I tried out a half tuck with some pants that are getting a little big. I felt like I had room to tuck in a sweater that I wore over a thermal and a turtleneck. I was also wearing thermals under my pants -- which provided way too much texture and caused my pants to bunch in very unflattering ways. The good thing about this outfit is it was toasty and comfortable.

The bad thing is I don't like how I look. Dumpy is a little harsh -- but there is definitely nothing fab about this outfit. These items won't be worn together again. Ever.

Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want. I wanted to try out a look that was warm. less feminine yet modern and fashionable. Eh -- not so much, back to the drawing board.
