I’ve written a few posts on socks Shiny, but they change every season because retailers change their stock. Also, socks are SO personal. I couldn’t possible generalize. BUT! People shouldn’t forget about socks. This item forms part of the “things we often neglect” list. Do you think it should go on the list?

I think I’m just refining the points:

o	Let’s change wrap shirt to MOCK wrap knitted top. Those are universally flattering.

o	Cashmere is a mute pint – I can barely wear it! Wool can be a big problem. So people need to find fabric they are not allergic too. Cardigans deserve a category of their own – an assortment of style and colour is important. VERY versatile.

o	A pair of dressy heels

o	An assortment of statement handbags

o	Eyewear – specs or/and sunglasses

o	Earrings? Studs and hoops – universally flattering

o	Layering tops

Yes - suits are on there! I don't remember a sock post? Send me the link... I'm intrigued.

I still keep getting the sense we're missing something... Angie, what did I miss??

This is a great post, Shiny! I admire your energy and passion for lists.

Can I add a business/interview suit to the list. (Or did I miss it?) Angie posted about this, I'm sure of it!

Also, don't we need socks? I remember that post as well! Even if one does not exercise, they are useful for inside boots.

This IS fun! Such astute lasses. I think our list might be complete.

I LOVE Bri’s suggestion of sunscreen, Antje’s mention of a cozzie, Sihaya's reference to loungewear and Laura’s memory of a puffer. SO GREAT. I don’t ever remember referring to eye-liner? And on that note, focus on skincare, not make-up, there is a HUGE difference.

What a fun idea Shiny - thank you for sharting the list. I would add:

- Fun accessories: cocktail rings, bracelets, head bands
- Eye liner and mascara
- Lipstick
- Dab of perfume
- A great hair stylist
- No line panties. If you're not a thong gal, then things like the Soma panty that Angie had blogged about or On Gossamer that you find at Nordstrom's.
- Loungewear for home that's distinctly separate from anything you wear outside your home :-)
- 8 hour shoes that look great too. Lia Bi Jou makes one of these for casual or smart casual. Paul Green boots fall into this category and so does anything that's made by Arcopedico (great for mom on the go outfits).

Laura, high on my list is a 3/4 trench in cream or a soft bluish grey, with black buttons, no epaulets, and none of those buckles on the sleeves. Double breasted okay, provided the buttons aren't too widely spaced. Preferably one that is truly waterproof (a lot of them aren't), and with a removeable lining so that I can wear it in cool weather (fall and spring). Is that too much to ask? LOL.

Chestnut riding boots are on my list but that'll probably have to wait until next fall.

A knee-length shift dress is on my list; I want one in a color other than black. I dream of finding one in a flattering shade of red. Shift dresses are tricky for me, a lot of them fit me awful. But not all of them. I have found a few that do flatter except they are in black. I don't need another black dress. :-(

For example, I did really love the fit of the ponte knit shift dress currently at ATL. They have it in black in the store, and in green online only. The green is okay, but I don't think I'd get as much use out of it as I would something in more of a fall color, because lined ponte knit is kinda heavy.

A bangle bracelet that worked with my small wrist, and didn't slip right off, would be great.

I am also contemplating hoop earrings. I always thought my neck was too short for dramatic hoop earrings, but I'm wondering if I found just the right ones, they might work afterall, particularly now that my hair is shorter. (This one idea i did get from Nina's book).

Caftans and mocassins are definetly NOT on my list.

This is a great thread, Shiny! Thank you for starting it.

Did anyone mention sweaters? I would add:

* cashmere sweaters in two neutrals (black, grey, cream, brown) and one bright color, in whatever neckline suits you best: turtleneck, v-neck or crewneck

So Shiny, what holes do you need to fill in your wardrobe? I am thinking what I need to fill in some holes right now is a fashion sneaker, a new pair of jeans (maybe faded?), and clams in white denim. Plus some accessories, like statement necklaces, when I come upon them.

Antje, I think the key term is "workable." This is what I felt was missing from Nina's book. And yes, of course, not all these items are going to suit everyone's tastes and style, but the list would be a good reference for those building a workable wardrobe.

For example, if you happen to like wrap dresses and wrap skirts then a cami is an essential to make your wardrobe work. Likewise, micro-fishnets would be something you might want to consider if you do happen to wear a lot of skirts. Particularly black skirts with black boots - the microfishnets can add a touch of texture. Does that make more sense?

Nina mentions things like Caftans, sarongs, mongrammed stationary and minnetonka mocassins, but she never mentions camis. Reading the book I can imagine collecting every last item she lists - and having a wardrobe that doesn't work. I think her goal was more about iconic stylish pieces, rather than having a working wardrobe.

Angie - I do think we're already at 40! But I can still think of others that we haven't mentioned....

The other method for my madness: yesterday I had a day off and spent a few hours rotating and culling my wardrobe. I was thinking about what the holes were that I still needed to fill. I thought this brainstorm session would help me find them.

Oh, Shiny. You crack me up! You weren’t dreaming. Angie doesn’t own black pumps or a pair of black slacks (but I do own a pair of black-black jeans) . And black items are fabulous – I totally encourage them. But I’ll come down on you like a ton of bricks if you “black rut” or wear black from top to toe ALL the time.

I’m adding to the challenge – let’s put an order to the items. The best bra that you can afford is top of the list. How about a tailored jacket and a colourful accessory.

I believe that we can get to a list of 25 to 40 VERY easily. We might even be there.

Interesting, thanks for clarifying. I haven't read Nina's book so this is new to me.

But I also struggle with the concept of recommending 100 things a woman needs to be stylish. The first 25 to maybe even 50 might be easy, in terms of super versatile pieces like great fitting jeans and a white button shirt, but at some point you reach a limit of what suits everybody's taste and personal style. And then, I think, comes a section with "options" to pick from. For instance, I doubt I'll ever wear pearls, but consider myself quite stylish in a different way than Angie or you or Maya or Tanya or other YLF members who wear pearls with great style. As another example, I don't think everyone needs micro fish nets in their wardrobe (hey, some women might never wear a skirt in their life and they can still be ultra stylish.)

I personally find it at least as interesting to find out what the unique items are that individual women consider essential in their wardrobe, things that make up their personal style outside the 25 or 50 or 100 items we all might benefit from owning. Okay, okay, I guess I'm side-tracking the thread Sorry about that, maybe I'll start a separate one after you guys reach the 100

Antje, yes, like a YLF recommended wardrobe. I.e., if Angie had been tasked to write "One Hundred" instead of Nina Garcia.

Nina's premise is that her 100 items are all the items any self-respecting fashionista should own. I am guessing (hopefully not being presumptious!!!!!) that Angie's 100 would be more along the lines of "100 items to make a stylish AND workable wardrobe."

I was thinking about this today because I had the day off and I spent a few hours rotating my closet, culling items and thinking about what I still needed to fill the holes.

A lot of things on Nina's list I'd file in the "nice to have" category but aren't necessarily items I thikn I'd get a whole lot of wear out of.

Agreed...I refuse to give up black as well. I think blondes look EXTRA fab in black.

I like the idea of adding neutrals with texture and mixing with black... a smart look as well.

Shiny, I'm confused, what is this list? Items we think Angie owns? Or items we think she endorses, kind of like a "YLF recommended wardrobe"?

Taylor, half my wardrobe is black - though I haven't worn black pants in ages. I live in Boston where black is the uniform. Even if I have blonde hair, I'm going to be wearing black. So I'm not about to give black up! But I do think Angie's rule about buying neutrals with texture makes a lot of sense, so maybe we should add that into the 100? For example:

Black dress pump in... patent leather or suede or something with interesting texture?

(Still not giving up my new 4-inch classic black pumps though....)

And black handbag: Angie often suggests cracked black patent leather. Since I happen to own such a handbag, which is my all-time favorite and I have had tons of use out of it since I bought it, I agree with that.

Shiny, I hope at the end you will compile the final list. ;)

How about

pearl necklace* and **
waistcoat *
micro fishnets *
skinny belt *
denim skirt*
scarf *
skirt shirts * and **
I'll stop with lucky 7 unless I think of some more.

Shiny,
I think you are right. There was a thread not long ago, and some people don't wear black at all. I guess we should be *color neutral* with our suggestions hu?
Although I agree with you about adding the white jeans too!
