I'm working entirely inside (in a windowless space) for the first time
in forever. My commute is through heavy traffic and I have minutes of
daylight on both ends and on most weekends we have had extremely gray
or cold weather. Totally not what I am used to living at high elevation in one of the sunniest states in the country. It has me down.

I can't wait for warm weather. Unfortunately, my office will probably still continue to be cold which will make spring and summer dressing a challenge. The floor I work on is air conditioned, while the rest of the building is not.

I'm at the time of year where my winter clothes are feeling worn to death, but I'm just starting to be reluctant to refresh. I have 1.5-2 months before our transitional weather should start-- and I won't likely get a shopping trip in before the transitional season begins. I can't decide whether to shop winter clearance this spring on my trip to Az (end of March--hopefully we'll still get there!) or shop spring or both.

But, despite the diatribe-- I agree with you. Despite loving winter clothes, I would rather be purchasing for spring!

Mo, for me, it's both.

I mean BOTH the weather getting to me, plain and simple...and my needing new colours, fabrications, and silhouettes. The two go together. Because I need heavy woollens and layers now, and I also need skinnies to tuck into my boots, and I can't wear skirts easily.

This winter it's especially acute. Winter's always my longest season. But this year has been a more limiting winter than most in that it's been seriously cold and VERY snowy (with intermittent scary ice) since mid-December. Without a break. So I'm really tired of all my sweaters. They've all been worn multiple times and multiple ways. Each has definitely earned out its CPW, that's for sure. And I've also identified the ones I like the most and those I like least and the reasons for that -- which helps with purchases going forward.

Anyway...over the long term, I've recognized that I need to buy MORE knit wear than summer tops, because my winter is so much longer. It only makes sense.

Mo, I really like your back-to-school analogy. It really does lift the spirit to change the style of clothing that you wear as the seasons change. Trends keep things new. Angie is always saying that buying a few trendy items refreshes what's already in the wardrobe. The only good thing about this never-ending winter is that I realize I need more cold-weather clothes for next year, both for emotional reasons (so I don't get bored) and also for practical ones (I really had very few items that were up to temps this frigid!).

Hmm, Peri and Natalie bring up an interesting point. Do some of us need more variety within a season than we have? Or is it just the weather getting to us, plain and simple.
For me, I look forward to the change in silhouettes and fabrics, the weight of things, etc. Goodness knows I have enough stuff. Much of my closet gets worn less than a dozen times a year. So I don't think another pair of pants or sweater would 'cure' the feeling. Rather, a swirly skirt or bright spring color is the kind of spirit lifter I had in mind.

Ha, I guess it means my wardrobe is way too big because I have so many clothes that the seasons change before I can wear them all and get tired of them! I think I need to be on a strict SYC but every time I declare one, I end up shopping more! So I am not buying, but not on official "SYC".

I know what you mean about wanting a fresh look though!

Not at all sick of my winter clothes...still loving them for the first time in years! But that is because they are 90% new, and you are right, they have brightened my spirit. It definitely transcends the clothes themselves. I feel so much better in every way, just because I feel good about what I'm wearing.

Now here's hoping I can achieve something similar for warm and hot weather, because a bright spirit is a good thing!

Actually, I was just thinking about how excited I feel that the winter clothes will be hitting the stores here on Monday. I feel a bit like a kid at Christmas! I love seeing all the new and different colours and textures and shapes that a new season brings and it is even more exciting having had a little sneak preview by seeing all the gorgeous clothes the Northern Hemisphere YLFers have been wearing over winter.

I have never in my life been so eager for spring!! Never. And I have never, ever obsessively checked my favourite online stores for new merchandise like I am doing now. I am just so ready for a change!!

I did purchase some "winter refresher" items but haven't been able to pick them up yet due the the terrible weather. But do you know what? I'm likely to return most of these!! Since I hit the buy button I have looked at them so many times I am sick of even them!!! Sounds crazy, but thank goodness it was Nordstrom -- at least my money won't have gone to waste and I will be able to spend it on something else after I send this stuff back.

"Amen" to that Mo! I always feel uninspired in the late part of any given season… especially toward the end of summer or winter. You are right that it is not really about temps. For me it is about boredom… plain and simple. I think that a little change is good for the soul.

I know we all like clothes, otherwise we wouldn't be here. But I think even the everyday Joe or Jane needs this signal of change, even if they are not consciously aware of it.

I am not even in the polar vortex and I am getting tired of winter wear. I know some folks think fashion is a ploy of sorts to get us to buy what's deemed new and 'in' each season. I'm beginning to think we need the change to freshen up our everyday outlook. It transcends the clothing. It brightens the spirit. A shift is needed to shake things up and wake us up. I feel like it's the dregs of winter right now and everyone is just trudging along waiting for spring to bloom on us! (maybe I'm just feeling uninspired with my limited winter wardrobe here, but I don't think it's just that)
