I love the first outfit because it is a bit unexpected. I think a cheeky sweater would be perfect to update the look a bit.

Viva, I was thinking perhaps a cropped sweater as well. The skirt comes up high on my natural waist, so if I could find a nice cheeky sweater, it would work, and probably give me the look I'm going for without having to tuck anything.

You all are SO helpful and insightful - love all of your help and ideas!

I love the second outfit - just perfect the way it fits you, amazing. The first skirt is gorgeous. I keep thinking of Angie's post (yesterday?) about cheeky sweaters and wonder what a shorter chunky sweater might look like, as a way to make it more casual? I realize this doesn't solve the problem of that particular sweater and it potentially sends you back to the stores! But you have a fab figure and could totally pull off the pencil skirt with shorter sweater.

Agree with Marley and Claire especially.

I don't think either outfit is better actually, so much as the vibe being very different. Though agree this sweater is too bulky for thst half tuck. I mean, second outfit is spectacular... because spectacularly bombshell! And that is not what you want for #1, yes?

The first outfit does deserve a finer sweater I guess. But I like the color combo.

The first outfit is not bad at all! I love pencil skirts, but I find it really hard to make them casual with chunky or sporty tops (and I really need to figure out how to do this, since I don't even work outside the home). I like your chunky sweater here, and agree that just wearing it loose might work nicely. Nice necklace.

The second outfit is perfection. Try the shoes with it and see how you feel. I think your two patterns will be far enough away from each other to make them play nicely together. You were born to wear that Halogen seamed skirt!

I like the sweater, but think it is too thick and not drapey enough for a semi-tuck. I think the shoes look good. The second outfit is fab, although I confess to a weakness for the bombshell look.

I get where you are coming from with the menswear look. My experience has been that when you are curvy, you need the pieces to be VERY well-tailored, otherwise everything just hangs off your bust and looks shapeless. You can manage the look you are going for, but you have to be much fussier with the clothes you choose, IMO. Embrace the curves, I say!

K, I think it's the sweater weight, the bulky half tuck + the shoes combined. The red necklace was on from a previous try-on w/a chambray shirt (that I have a love/hate relation with). It's too much chunky in one place! This is my typical "Saturday sweater" with skinny jeans + boots, and I think I may have to leave it in the Saturday camp, it's impossibly big - belting it would make a mess!

I was out tonight and found a cute blouse that looks nice with the skirt (after I had given up on blouses!). I'm still keeping my eyes out for a sweater though...so the saga continues!

The thing is, I would love to throw on a bunch of relaxed and menswear inspired clothes, but with the curves, it looks so sloppy each and every time. I'm finally starting to realize I need to just stop, because the way I want it to look is never ever how it looks. In my head, it's chill, relaxed and easy -- in actuality it's untailored and awkward. I realize that I need to accentuate the curves to look more put together sometimes.

I like both of these - although, because of the angle of your camera, its difficult to really be able to see the proportions. The 2nd one with the cobalt sweater is a stand-out! Just perfect! The first one, I would like to see with the sweater out completely (no tucking) and I'd remove the necklace - I think it adds to the weightiness of the top half of the outfit. You could also wear this skirt with (as Angie calls them) a sassy sweatshirt and would get the same kind of "feel" that you're trying to get with the oversized sweater.

the colbalt is fab, fab, fab.
imo, the reason that the colbalt one works better is because it emphasis your waist and thus really shows off your figure. the 1st outfit, is missing that. maybe belting the sweater would work.

So Von, I went back and looked at a couple of your past WIWs to confirm my suspicion. I think you are right about the first outfit. Not that it is a fail! If you were walking down the street, I wouldn't think, wow! disaster! I don't know that I'd particularly notice it at all. I just don't think that this is showcasing all the loveliness that is you, which seems to be what you gut is telling you.

I think it is the weight of the sweater and the half tuck. And it could be the shoes. I could see you wearing the sweater (untucked) with the pencil skirt and the dark tall boots that you were wearing in an earlier WIW. You'd have heavier boots with heavier sweater and it would all look very outdoor autumn lovely. I even think that adding the extra weight with the footwear would balance the necklace. I bet you would really like the combo.

For a more feminine take, I'd go with the finer gauge on the sweater you mentioned. If it is a little slouchy or oversized, but drapey from being a finer gauge, I think it will give you the femininity you want, but knocked back from bombshell into relaxed and feminine territory.

Love the cobalt option and can't wait to see that as a stand alone WIW!

Love the cobalt! Boots would balance out the sweater, but I the oxfords actually work for me. I think I'd remove the necklace - I think it's what tipping the balance up top.

Ooh - love the second outfit for sure! And you have joined the Seamed Skirt YLF brigade. There are so many of us with this skirt in various colours that we probably couldn't count! It gets a LOT of love in these parts.

I actually like the first outfit. I suspect with the sweater it is more a question of how it feels vs. how it looks, because although the camera angle may obscure (or create) problems, to my eye it actually looks pretty darned good!

Thanks ladies. I have some ankle boots coming tomorrow, so I'll try it again with them to see if I feel differently about it. I agree that the angle probably is making my feet look like dots. I'll also take a shot of the gray sweater untucked. It's all sorts of boxy!

I wanted to make this red skirt and sweater look more casual (AKA, not so bombshell), but I think this sweater is way too bulky for the half tuck. I also tried it with the oxfords, but despite my size 10 feet, they aren't helping to balance out my shape any. I should probably go for a thinner V-neck sweater and different shoes - correct? I'm thinking tall boots...

The second photo is my cobalt contribution, I can't wait until it's cool enough to wear this. Same skirt, different color, better sweater - I look like I lost 10lbs in this outfit! I usually don't do crew necks, but I think this one is shapely enough to not make me look like a block. Could I wear the B/W okalas with this, or is it too much?

On a side note, I am in love with this Halogen skirt! It's got the perfect amount of stretch + weight.
