Ladies, thank you all so much for the comments. I'm overwhelmed. I love the enthusiasm and promise to try and avoid looking too costumey (although a cutlass would be awesome)

Fern - at the moment I work in a conservative engineering based field. It's not uncommon for a meeting to be me (female, 30 something) and a group of 50/60 something white, middle class men. I don't have to wear a suit, and I can sneak a little pirate in (especially on casual Friday) but mostly it's tailored office workwear Monday to Thursday. Think pencil skirts, tailored trousers and non matching jackets. So more lady, less pirate.

Caro in Oz - I love those links - thank you for the inspiration.

Eden- I'm afraid my budget doesn't stretch to designer but those are great names to look at for inspiration. I've long loved Vivienne Westwood and as a Brit I know All Saints, although I have to agree with Alaskagirl that they have lost me a bit with the more recent collections.

TraceyLiz65 - love it. Thank you!

I would say just be careful that the label doesn't take you into a direction that it becomes a costume... It is a fun place to start.

Monikers should help focus our style energy and inspire creativity. It sounds like "Lady Pirate" does this for you! You can always choose a new moniker if you want a style shift --- no need to be monogamous in fashion!

I've never settled on a moniker myself, which used to bug me. I've found two rubrics that guide me, however. Both tools are so helpful in working toward a wardrobe that functions for real life while projecting a persona that makes up feel confident and authentic.

Eden, I wish Allsaints still did that steampunk post-apocalyptic look; they have gotten much less creative recently. I loved the hitched skirts and other stuff they had (love the term "gothwaif"! ). Have you seen Lindsey Stirling perform "Radioactive" with the Pentatonix? It's on youtube and totally post-apocalyptic gothwaif-ish.

As a lady living on a boat, I love this style description! For me, this lifestyle change has changed how I dress in a way quite similar to what you describe. A bit tougher (but with fluidity and drapey items to balance that out) and more practical, and certainly with greater consideration for the elements. It strikes me as funny now the extent to which urbanites seem to disregard the weather even in winter, relying on being able to pop in and out of a succession of heated environments. . .

Some designers I've found inspiring that sort of fit into the niche you're describing are Comme Des Garcons, Ann Demeulemeester, Yamamoto and Vivienne Westwood. On the high street, the UK brand All Saints Spittalfields do exactly that steampunk mix of drapey gothwaif and utility gear that I love so much.

I don't have any suggestions, but I think lady pirate sounds awesome! All those style monikers are after all only helpful if the image they invoke before your inner eye when you hear them fits with the style you want to have. They have to work for you or they won't succeed helping you focus. I don't have a style descriptor for myself currently, but I try to keep some style descriptors in mind - simple, grounded and feminine.

Note - this seems to have become very long. Hopefully someone will make it to the end of my ramblings, but I won't blame you if you can't.

I love the style monikers you all seem to have but wasn't sure how to shoehorn my eclectic seeming desires. I want to be practical - able to move and not fuss with my clothes. I like tailored clothes for work and heels with those. At home I want to be comfortable, so I can stretch, pop out and do some light gardening, housework, etc but so I can answer the door without shame and leave the house without doing a full change. And when I go out I want to be stylish and confident.

I recently said on a previous post I wanted to be Angelina Jolie (ladylike, practical, amazing tailoring, always looks elegant and feminine but never girly, and can definitely take names and kick a**) meets Helena Boham-Carter (dramatic, feminine, quirky but grown-up, a little bit steampunk). And then recently in real-life I got ready to go for a drink and my husband told me I looked like a pirate- slightly draped trousers tucked into OTK boots, a sleeveless top (all black) and a burgandy fitted leather jacket - with a scarf in a similar colour and a pocket watch inspired necklace. It was easy and comfortable and I loved that he said pirate. So I wonder. Maybe for now I can try being a lady pirate and see how that works for me (im not sure its entirely there, but it's something)

And if those references give you any other suggestions or thoughts I am all ears!
