I too have in person shopping anxiety, so I sympathize! I'm learning to get more used to it though because I have been shopping online, buying two sizes and returning one to the nearby Nordstrom store. It's inconsistent, sometimes I need the smaller size and sometimes the larger, depending on the brand. Usually after I return, I look around briefly to see if anything catches my eye. Once I found a nice Fair Isle sweater, and today I tried on a bunch of Rag and Bone clothes to see how the sizing runs (also inconsistent depending on the piece!) A couple times I've had salespeople who weren't super helpful, but twice I have had nice SAs who would bring different sizes, and today since they didn't have the Rag and Bone jacket in the size I wanted, the SA suggested another denim jacket from a different brand, and it worked well and I bought it! It's nice when you get helpful SA's. Otherwise, I get kind of anxious looking at all the sales racks. It's so random, if I'm looking for something in particular I'll never find it, whereas it's easier to search online. If sizing were more consistent, it would be easier to shop online! I really like Nordstrom's more generous return policy and if I find it goes on sale, sometimes the SA in the store will let me return and rebuy an item at the lower price.

The only Nordstrom I have been to is in Cherry Hill, NJ (I no longer live in that area but go back to visit family and friends) and in recent years I’ve also noticed the selection getting sparse and the racks being placed further and further apart. Our local Macy’s here in upstate NY has started doing the same.

I do little in-person shopping anymore, though I did go to the mall the other day. An indoor mall, straight from the 90s. Had a strawberry boba tea!

The fun thing about malls is they have very specific stores. In a goth store, my friend found a rockabilly style tee with an image of Elvira, and I do hope she gets it.

Congrats on venturing out for something new! Alas your Nordstrom sounds like the one I had near me in NJ, it was sparse, and felt like it was returned stock versus new stock. In NC the Nordstrom stock is much more but it's also far from me, so I tend to shop online more than I'd like. But when I return I prefer to go to the store, so I can shop in person a bit and it makes me feel like the drive was worth the time then. It also helps that there's a Nordstrom Rack nearby so I can make a full day of it!

Yesterday I had to go to the international terminal at O'Hare for my Global Entry interview, and the parking garage was so confusing, with so much signage, that first I thought I would never find where I was supposed to be, and then I thought I'd never would find my way out. Plus, my car is a white SUV and indistinguishable from 1,000 other vehicles. I need to get a raccoon tail or a neon pennant to identify it. And then the pay before you exit machine took at least four tries to recognize my parking ticket. Parking anxiety is real, my friends!

I like heading to a mall during the holidays to hear music and see the decorations. So maybe that will be an option for you now that you have the logistics sorted? Our nearest mall also has small summer music events. It’s nice to run errands to live music.

Well done! Parking stress is not fun and the reason I visit so few of the larger shopping malls in my city. I am a very local shopper, staying in my neck of the woods with minimal parking issues.

A shame that your Nordies experience, whilst expected, was not one to delight you.

Well done!

Sadly, the Nordstrom’s that are left in my area (Towson, Columbia, Rockville) are similar to what you describe. They feel rather empty. These days I’m shopping Nordies online and returning to the Rack. And I’m not even doing a lot of that these days.

We have a very large mall in a fairly central suburb which has terrible parking. I have only braved it perhaps 5 times since it opened in about 2019 not long before the pandemic. I chose to use public transport to go there before Christmas 2 years ago because the month before that the exits from the parking building got so blocked that the queues were actually hours long and some poor woman had to wet herself in her vehicle! Stuff of nightmares.
I did go there only once last year after a medical appointment nearby. Almost lost my car when returning to it due to disorientation as despite having the correct floor it looked similar out either side of the areas where you paid for parking. Think it only allowed 2 hours free or you had to enter a receipt or something. I had tried hard to make sure I knew where I had parked! Found my car after a short while.
Glad you’re no longer intimidated though in case you do want to go back!

We have a Rack which is not the same. I only order from Nordstrom online, and make returns, if necessary, to the Rack. For awhile, it wasn’t allowed, and I had to mail returns. My mother lives in the SF Bay Area, and the Nordstrom by her used to have a pianist. I haven’t been there in awhile. I order NYDJ blouses for my mother online.

To Angie's post about department stores, I had commented that there is a Nordstrom one town over from me that I had never been to due to parking garage anxiety (not afraid of parking garages per se, just hadn't been to this one before, didn't know where the entrance was, etc.) I challenged myself to go this week so this morning I went.

The parking was as confusing as I'd feared, though I figured it out eventually and will know how it works next time.

The merchandise was nice enough, the store was clean and pleasant, and the staff was helpful, but the selection was very sparse, with racks placed far from each other. What racks there were did not contain many choices or size options.

It made me miss my old Nordstrom from the King of Prussia Mall outside Philadelphia.

I did learn how and where to pick up online orders, which is the most likely thing to take me back. :(. There's a Bloomingdales in the same shopping mall - "the Sonos Collection" - but I didn't go there.

Overall, disappointing but no longer intimidating so I'll count it as a win!
