Yes chewy - there were lots of them in the Australia winter and my response was just the same. I love the way they LOOKED but didn't buy them for that reason - even though we have a mild climate.

And April I'm pretty much with you on sweater dresses, though early in my YLF time when they were pretty popular I did buy and wear a short sleeved one pretty much to the ground. I just wore a tight fitting black tee underneath alone with black tights.

Sisi and CS -- YES. The low-necked woolens (grrrr) and the sleeveless high-necked chunky knits.... whaaat? Seasonal confusion in one garment.

Of course, I felt that way about "sandal booties" and then they came to seem like the coolest and most normal thing in the world.

Have you guys been seeing the high necked sleeveless tunics in your area? I've seen a bunch, and they don't make a lot of sense to me either. I guess to layer under in a mild climate they work. Just seems a weird combination, with a chunky knit, high neck and long length with no sleeves.

I wholeheartedly agree that clothes made to keep warm should be made to keep warm ! What drives me mad is seeing continually woolen sweaters with deep necklines ...

Yes. Case in point the sweater dress I am wearing today. The whole point of dressing a sweater dress is because it is easy, not that I have to figure out how to layer it. ( which I didn't btw)

Just when I had decided there was no point whatsoever in a sleeveless sweater dress, I pictured someone with a style like Angie's and a fairly straight figure wearing one over a white button-down. (Not me -- too bunchy.)

"Bunchy" is my problem with a lot of the layering solutions. Tucking the layers into my tights? Ooh, sorry, but my flesh is crawling at the thought.

The bodysuit idea is appealing for this reason, though for heaven's sake, COULD THEY JUST SELL MORE LONG-SLEEVED SWEATER DRESSES FOR COLDER CLIMATES?

Must we ALWAYS bundle up like polar bears and preschoolers? The quantity of clothing on the floor when I change into my pajamas in the winter is truly shocking.

I'm looking to add some sweater dresses to my winter wardrobe as II like the idea of a warm, cosy, no-fuss garment to just throw on and go. It does seem strange that some are sleeveless: doesn't make sense to me, either.

I don't always layer under mine, I layer over instead. I put a jacket, wrap, or another sweater on top. I also ignore the panty line problem. These dresses stretch out as you wear them. Often what looks like a problem in the morning, will be gone soon. Finally, wear tights and tuck your top into the tights, then put on a slip the length of the dress, then the dress. It helps reduce the lines. (I wear a lot of sweater dresses, and I like them, so I have sorted this problem). Goood luck!

At the risk of making a complete nuisance of myself on this thread: WB, yes I have tried a long sleeve body suit under a sleeveless sweater dress or tunic. Asos has some nice black ones in lace and I like the combination of the lace sleeves with the knit dress. It is streamlined as you say. But I have a long torso and they tend not to be that comfortable for me.
And thanks Ginger. I have the opposite problem to the rest of you because I love, love, love knit dresses but they are not very suitable for my climate. I have to improvise.

The line is going to be there because of tights or leggings anyway, but the shirt underneath possibly slipping up during movement is annoying. Has anyone worn it with a bodysuit? I like that a bodysuit not only gives me long sleeves and no line, but since I like to wear sweater tights and sizing for my slim frame has nearly always involved the crotch of my sweater tights sliding down my thighs by mid-day, I like the combo of no shirt to slide up and tights held in place.

Brooklyn, I can see that it would indeed be useful in a truly mild climate. My part of Texas can be called mild overall... but the days typically swing so much in temperature that a sleeveless or short sleeve sweater is not going to be comfortable. And your slender figure can indeed layer and look splendid in a lot of styles! I'm glad you do enjoy them and deploy them well.

Amen, April. And for me, that goes for all cold weather dresses, but there is something really nonsensical about a sleeveless sweater, unless it comes '50s style, with a matching cardigan!

It looks like it falls to me to mount a spirited defence of the short sleeved or sleeveless sweater dress:

Great for mild climate (c'mon, it can't be just me!)
Great for when it's cold outdoors but warm indoors (you can layer over and peel off, but you can't peel off a long sleeve sweater dress)
Great for those of us who run warm

Re the layering under issue. I sometimes layer under with a dress as in the second find (no line issue) or else I buy thicker, non clingy knits where this would not be a issue in any case. I have a free people thermal that I layer under the sleeveless knit dress in the finds and I think the contrast and cuff effect looks nice. And I am less likely to overheat in a cotton or jersey sleeve than in a wool or cashmere knit sleeve.

I actually took the sleeves off a sweater dress last year to make it more wearable for me. I should have offered it up to the forum

Agree. I have one, it has long sleeves and is a finer knit. sized up one size and it feels more drapey than kling. since I have broad shoulders I do this a lot with knits to get the look I want as it doesn't throw off the shoulder fit. But it does have a bigger neck than I like. Find this with some crew neck sweaters too. These I have to wear a scarf if it is cold.

Yes, agreed...and that's why I've just finished cutting out my own to sew up (smug face hee, hee). Seriously though. It just does not make sense to have short sleeves on a sweater dress...WHY??

YES! And especially with the layering difficulties. I want to be able to just wear the dress, not have to agonize over what under-layer will mess with the look the least. And as a very pear-ish pear, even fit and flare sweater dresses cling. That line is just deadly to the look.

Hallelujah! Yes, a thousand times yes. Give me a sweater dress with sleeves, preferably long.

AGREE. Also a sweater dress should not have a deep scoop neckline and should be longer than a tunic. It's like designers create clothing for 24-year-olds who are no bigger than size 4, which they label as a Medium.
