I think we are about done here. I have made several attempts to explain that there are different ways of critiquing. Here’s one more try, from a completely different area: I have heard from many academics that hazing, at conferences and in thesis/dissertation defenses, is the norm, and frequently quite painful. The point of writing a doctoral dissertation (called a thesis in some places) is that you become the expert on that topic. The program where I got my degree takes many grad students to conferences every year. They are well prepared, deliver excellent papers on the whole, and are well received. My dissertation defense was wonderful. I had spent such a big chunk of my life and poured myself onto that writing. To sit with a group of brilliant people who had all read it all the way through and were prodding me to make it stronger, from a position of having taken the time for it and wanting me to be the best I could be, was just the warmest, most loving thing imaginable. They trusted that I had done my work and asked me hard questions. I could answer them, because I had indeed done the work. That was the tradition in my department. We prepared hard for the defense, because we wanted to do ‘em proud, and we did. Not every day is a doctoral defense, but if that can be such a joy fest—and there are many studies that show people learn best and are more amendable to change when they are happy than when they feel beaten down—then I think it is entirely possible for other corrections and suggestions for improvement to be made in a way that is clear and also builds people up.

I’ll repeat this part too: I’ve seen various things by the presenters of WNTW in recent years, and they all seem to have come to the same conclusion, that the milk of human kindness goes well with everything.

How nice that you had a good relationship with your mother. I tend to spend much of spring trying to duck the barrage of Mothers Day ads and assorted Schmalz about mothers, can hardly imagine I’ll miss mine when she’s gone (though it will be difficult to figure out a caretaker for Dad). She was not a seamstress, but occasionally sewed things for all of us, mostly dresses, and taught me about conventional color and pattern matching, using one color for all accessories in an outfit, etc.along with plenty of things about myself that I’m working really hard to unlearn. There are several of us on ylf who appreciate a little caution with assumptions about mothers. As I mentioned earlier, honesty does not require rudeness, and can be quite kind. Otoh, it can also be used for a laugh, which is a style I’d never want to make my own.

@SF: I loved both shows. Maybe it’s because my mother was a professional seamstress & was all about dressing appropriately to suit the activity or occasion. I have always dressed well, thanks to the training she gave me. She was, however, every bit as frank as Stacy & Clinton (& The Dowager on Downton Abbey) https://youtu.be/GB6q1egb-6g
whenever my choices weren’t the best. I never thought she was being rude; just honest. Oh how I miss her!

Being frank is fine. It can be done kindly and compassionately, or in a way designed to humiliate people for the sake of humor. I’m not on board with the latter. Sounds like presenters no longer are either—good for them!

PS, I want bunnies, lol. JAileen, could that have been an ad?

@SF: Trinny was not on WNTW in the States. She was with her friend Susannah on a similar British show.

I, too, have often wondered what aging gracefully actually means. We can all fight it, but we all age whether we like it or not.

I personally think that some people won’t realize how badly suited their clothing choices are for their careers unless someone tells them in a very frank manner. Further, the people who agreed to be on the show knew that their wardrobes were going to be critiqued & changed, & they were each given $5k to spend on their new clothes. Yes, a lot of old clothing was thrown away—stuff that shouldn’t be worn for their respective professions.

I’ve never understood what aging gracefully is supposed to mean, although I’ve seen many references over the years to doing it differently from whatever that original concept was.
WNTW isn’t something I’d watch. Didn’t they make people throw their old clothes out? But I know now that Trinny was one of the women on that show and has become a warm person, a supporter of people expressing themselves with fashion. Now it seems like her partner has joined her. Pity the mean versions got so much attention—their attitudes now sound much more deserving of a show & an audience.

I attended a book talk by Stacy and a talk by Clinton. Stacy was honest, and self-revealing. Clinton was charming and funny. I learned a lot from WNTW, even though I took everything with a grain of salt. But I like the after version of each of them even more.

Another fan of WNTW and both of the presenters. Having grown up with a mother who liked to say: “you have to suffer to look beautiful”, I appreciated that Stacy and Clinton often explained to their clients that you could look good and feel comfortable in ‘real clothes’ (as they wrestled the sweat pants and sweatshirts away from said clients.)

I think my daughters & I watched every single episode of WNTW, primarily for entertainment value, but mixed with helpful advice (& intervention) for career women. My daughters have since all finished college with their respective masters degrees in Food Science, Early Childhood Education, & Pharmaceuticals. They all needed to know how to dress for those professions, & WNTW taught them those concepts better than I (being the mom) ever could.

That said, when we reach a certain age & certain high falutin people want to put us in a straight jacket, it’s time to decide whether we want to slavishly follow their “rules” or break free from them. I’m with Stacy on this. Ignore them & do what feels authenticity you.

It’s true you know, a person has a seriously long time to go. And that sorta 18-35 stage is a blink of an eyelash. I’d go so far as to say you still don’t quite own yourself, even then and having left childhood. On Tuesdays I share my office with a co-worker who’s turning 32 or so. We were reflecting how sad it is to think going out all the time at night or something is ‘peak.’ You leave your family of origin in your late teens, socially, and it’s like you have to swim for a place to build your own nest. I mean, it’s exciting but also bad to be lost at sea forever… not really a goal. Not really the best stage to relegate ALL the good clothes to… jus’ sayin’…
