I have been spending this evening going back and reading threads that i missed out on several weeks ago when I was withdrawing from the world - and I have to say, this has got to be one of the most interesting ones! I think the best story so far is Beth's - I mean, what are the chances of a chicken pecking your earring out of your ear????? That one just made me laugh out loud!

I have lost several well-loved items over the years. Of course, a studded diamond earring - seems like that is pretty standard here on the forum. One that I will never forget is a ring that was my MIL's. It was her wedding ring - beautiful set of diamonds with her initials on the inside - her initials were the same as mine. It was given to me by my FIL after she died. One night I was standing out on the balcony of our house and I slapped a bug away from my face and the ring slipped off of my finger and I heard it hit the patio one story down. It was about 11 o'clock at night and my husband was already in bed. I went downstairs and outside with a flashlight and started frantically looking for it. I spent over 2 hours searching and searching and finally gave up and went to bed, but never fell asleep because I was so upset! The next morning I pretended that I was going to work, but actually called in sick and drove to a place that rented Metal Detectors - I rented one and went back home (my husband had left by then) and I went over and over our entire backyard. I found rusty nails, sprinkler heads, tin foil and even coins - but no ring. I gave up about 3 o'clock that afternoon and just cried myself sick. When my husband got home that evening, I "confessed" what had happened and what I had been doing all day. He was very kind about it, but felt really bad, so he took the metal detector outside and decided that he was going to look for it - AND you'll never believe this, but he found it within no more than THIRTY seconds! It was like a miracle! I cried then, because I was soooo happy!

Una - have you found that trenchcoat yet???

it could still turn up.. just pay attention to what your friends are wearing.

One of my kids lost a jacket several years ago, and of course I nagged him about it... "How do you lose a coat? I'm not buying you another one" I asked his friends moms if they had seen it laying around. Then several months later one of his friends comes over to the house. They are sitting around and suddenly T looks at him and says, "hey, isn't that my coat?" Friend replies, "Oh, is it? I wondered where it came from" LOL

Oh, and then there's my son who looks at me the day he's supposed to leave for camp to say that he has no underwear. Huh? Turns out, every time his friend "Mike" came to swim, he would "borrow" a dry pair of boxers. I went and bought some new ones and he was quite shocked when I told him how much he owed for them. No buddy, these things aren't cheap! Don't give them away to your friends!

Honestly Una-- that was how I realized I wasn't getting enough oxygen to my brain (literally). I was continuingly loosing clothing items and other things of importance that were almost impossible to loose. I am still missing several shirts that I swear never came off my body in public and a pair of shoes I swore I never took off. That and I locked my keys in the car and had to call a locksmith three times in one week . . .

Before that when I was in the second grade I somehow misplaced my winter coat at school--- that was a sad winter since my mother was so angry with me she didn't/couldn't find the money to replace it. You would have thought that I would have froze in CO, but I can't remember what I did to stay warm. Actually there were 4 years before I turned 18 that I didn't have a winter coat to my name, but I swear that I didn't loose any more.

Una, I mourn with you. Do try to remember where you have been and call - it may turn up.
I cannot even count how many earrings I have lost over the years (it is good I don't wear diamonds!) One of the saddest losses was a double one. My sister visited us about 5 years ago and gave me a gift - a watch, earrings and a ring with pale lavender Swarovsky crystals. I have lost a ring in a gym while changing and it never turned up. A bit later we were canoeing and that watch came undone on my wrist and fell into the lake. I still have the earrings though and they are my favorites!

Oh Una. So aggravating and sad:(

Aida, I lost one of my favorite diamond studs summer before last. One of my chickens was distracted by its sparkle, jerked it out of my ear, and swallowed it. Grr.

I'm paranoid about losing my wedding rings when I wash my hands, so I hold them in my teeth. Sounds silly, but I'd forget them if I put them in a pocket, and they'd end up in the wash or at the dry cleaners. Eek.

While moving a few years ago ( ok well maybe 8 years ago!) I lost the perfect brown lamb ? leather jacket. IT made me look tiny ( in good way!) was incredibly well cut, soft as can be and nothing has ever come close.

Sob.

Keepthekey: I love your friend's story but if I ever did that with my 'real' engagement ring ( I wear a smaller, plainer ring for daily wear) my husband would probably join my tossed ring at the bottom of the ocean. When he gave it to me he informed me it was the only piece of jewelry he would ever buy me ( so he did really good).

Not my story, but a good one, nonetheless... A friend of mine was on a boat with his family (wife, kids, etc) and he was pointing to something in the water, and his wedding ring came off! It just slipped away into the ocean, gone forever. A few seconds later his wife took off her ring and tossed it into the ocean. She said "Those rings are just a symbol, a thing. Nothing can really show all of our love for each other." I thought it was was incredibly romantic. When I told my boyfriend the story, he though she was crazy!

Aida, that is awful! Earrings are easy to lose, but diamonds are painful.

Aw Una that's no fun! A trench coat does seem like a rather.. erhm, large.. item to misplace. I hope it turns up!

I have lost a stud from not one, but TWO pairs of gifted diamond earrings from my husband -_- The first was many years ago. I was performing and the earring got caught on my clothing and was torn out of my ear; I spent 2 hours after the concert looking for it but of course it was nowhere to be found.

The other was from this past April on our San Francisco motorcycle trip. On the FIRST DAY we stopped for lunch just a couple hours away from home, and while taking off my helmet one of the earrings was pulled loose and fell to the ground (which was covered in gravel, of course). Spent almost an hour looking for it, but eventually had to give up and continue along.

(Though I suppose these aren't as bad as this one: on our Yellowstone trip, one of our friends lost his wedding ring while on the road; his hand cramped up so he shook his hand vigorously and because he was wearing fingerless gloves, off flew the ring.)

It was a GOOD jacket.

I have at least 3 miracle lost and found stories, including the time (ahem, 20+ years ago) I left my packback at a McDonalds in Switzerland *with all my stuff in it.* I panicked, returned to the hostel - and saw that my hostel roommates had seen it at the same Mickey Dees (what are the odds?!) and put it on my bed! Omigod, I still hyperventilate thinking about that. Then there's the time I left a favorite sweater at a restaurant in NYC, and my Pilates instructor randomly came in to eat there later, saw it, and returned it to me! I knock wood for the lucky!

To the point. I'd call every single place you might have left it. You really never know!

I am still mourning the loss of a fitted black velvet jacket with mandarin collar back in the 80s. I left it in a restaurant. Called and yes, they had it there. We got to the restaurant to pick it up—and it was gone. Obviously purloined by a staff member, but what could I do? Except curse myself, that is.

Many a cardigan or light jacket has been left behind at a bar or restaurant over the course of an evening out with friends. But once, I saw my lost marled black and white cardi again months later - on a friend of mine! She came into the bar as I was working wearing it. She wasn't out with us the night I lost it but came upon it somehow or another. I laughed it off and figured she scored out of my absent mindedness :)

I use to take my rings off while doing anything, especially eating, because at the time I wasn't use to wearing jewelry so they would actually get in my way. But I would often sit them on the table next to me, which was obviously a bad idea. I lost a few rings this way, but the worst one was one that my dad got me- it was Black Hills Gold with pearl. I STILL feel horrible about it and I lost it several years ago. Now if I take rings off to wash my hands or anything, they go straight into a pocket, unless I'm at home, at which point it's straight into the jewelry box.

SO sorry about your trench....but it may turn up yet. Maybe it got rolled up with your tent and camping gear? :-)

I thought I'd lost one of my favorite necklaces this morning, but then I remembered it might still be in my suitcase from last weekend's trip. And it was!

For me, it's mostly a tale of lost earrings. And I always seem to lose my favorites. Sob.

Between work, my son's school, errands, camping, the fair - somewhere in there I lost my trench coat! It was a PERFECT trench for me, an Alfani knee-length grey in a soft crinkly RATE material that I've had for years. I CANNOT think where it could have gone! How does one lose outerwear?! And I can't for the life of me remember all the places I've gone in the last week and a half...

Anyone else have a sob story to share?
