Tacky makes me think of Goldie Hawn in "OVERBOARD" when Roddy McDowell asks the diva if she wants her jewelry. With her fingernails freshly polished, she snarks, "no, I'm still tacky." What a hoot! Is she talking about her wet nails or her snobby, overkill style?

I should probably be quiet anyway when words like "Crimey" come to mind. Sorry I have done too much reading about international tax laws today. Not that they mentioned crimey there, but I believe my brain is a little scrambled. Signing off...

Is it "understanding *of* eachother?" that sounds right I think.

I know what you mean, Lisa. For example I often want to use the word "cute" but I remember reading at some point that some people are deathly offended by it. I just don't remember who. I guess we all need to be a little understanding with each other.

Man, it's like walking on eggshells around you people. Okay, then, I kept it to myself till now, but I would like to officially register my dislike of the word "pop" as in "pop of color" or "that will really make your eyes pop". It is so overused. And popping eyes sounds a little scary. However, "a bottle of pop" or "popping your collar" are delightful uses of this word.

I grew up with my father calling his own sister "tacky." Now that I'm an adult I'm not really sure I understand at all. At 70+ years old she wears heels, dresses, dyes her hair reddish and wears make up and has never considered herself beautiful but definitely interesting.

I use "tacky" all the time, but always when it comes to behaviours. Like, when someone yells at a waiter, that's tacky. Or, when someone wears a huge diamond to her kid's soccer game: even if the diamond is gorgeous, her behaviour is tacky.

A word that makes my skin crawl is "Classy." The word itself seems to be the polar opposite of the elegance it's meant to connote.

I'm on the tacky train with Maya, Kristen, and the rest. I think tacky actually does have a clear meaning, and think it works in certain situations. I agree with Marianne about tacky vs. cheap, and I much prefer tacky, because anyone can be tacky, including the wealthiest person in the world. Cheap, on the other hand, has more of a classist connotation, and to me seems less clear because it has multiple meanings. Also, I don't like it when the word cheap is used to mean a word like tacky or tawdry ("yuck, she looks so cheap in that outfit"), because it implies that anything that is cheap (aka inexpensive) is bad.

I probably didn't explain that well, so I'll make an analogy. When I was growing up, it was accepted to use the word "gay" to mean stupid, ridiculous, etc. As in "Hootie and the Blowfish are so gay." I never thought anything of it until someone who was gay said to me that it was damaging because using gay in that way extended the connotation to gay people. Now you never hear people use the word gay like that. I think cheap is similar.

But I think Angie was saying her hatred of the word tacky was irrational, right? That it's just one of those words she doesn't like the sound of? (For me, that word is mucus.)

As a now-retired communications prof, I absolutely love these threads.

They're living proof of the communication principle that the meaning of words resides in a person, not in the word. So Maya's comment "the problem is not everyone who uses it actually knows what it means, which ends up making it appear vague and confusing when it's really quite specific." is perfect! Don't we all feel like that when others misinterpret our words.

By the way, it is quite nice to be part of a forum where participants do choose their words carefully to clarify their opinions while respecting others' feelings.

Hmm I always thought that "tacky" is more politically correct than "cheap", at least in US. "Cheap" has a low cost connotation, or is it just me? I typically use "tawdry" or "loud".

While Angie has a personal hypersensitivity to the word TACKY, I am sure her intention was not to make those that enjoy using the word TACKY as a part of their everyday vocabulary feel defensive about this word choice.

That would be considered TACKY to some.

But words can and do invoke such powerful memories and meanings to individuals. While just the other day...

exactly what Kristin said.

for example...
returning shoes to Nordies after you have CLEARLY gotten more than your $$ out of them = tacky

bringing an uninvited guest to a wedding = tacky

sporting t-shirts or bumper stickers with sexual inuendos = tacky

Aww, I love "tacky". It is an elitest, subjective, pointed, condescending insult -- and sometimes you need a word like that to describe something. It can mean many things like cheap, low-brow, classless, ill-mannered, etc, but to me it means just one thing: something that is Just Not Done.

But I am well-aware when I use it I am being extremely snobby and snooty, and in a way it is as much a jab at myself for being snobby as it is a jab at whoever for being tacky. We're both being kind of classless, if you think about it.

*chuckle* @ Maya. I'd prefer to be tactful and nice :0).

Julie, Medusa, Beth, Kim, Michelle .... AND Maya - I really appreciate your points of view. It seems that there are different meanings for the word. Very interesting. I never grew up using the word tacky so it's also not natural for my vocabulary. I've only really heard it being used since we came to America. I guess I would have used the word "cheap" instead. Which is not a great word either - and I don't use it in that context anymore.

I use in in the same context Queenie does but I've also use it to describe my feelings on an outfit. Like leggings as pants.
