You know what we need? We need a "wear it or pitch it" challenge here on YLF - pick an orphan or something you've thought to get rid of, come up with x outfits using it, and wear one of them one day.

Would be a good idea for a new item too - before you take the tags off, make at least n outfits with it, and if you can't, back to the store it goes.

I think I must be cheating on SYC. I am not so much 'shopping' the closet as reusing the outfits I figured out I liked and cycling through them. See, I have so many outfits that it means I wear them max twice in this month?

Do you think I should hide my already made outfits to see what is left? That could be the opposite of IK's solution!

IK, good on you for bringing out the big guns and hectoring that closet into its place! That's channelling your frustration into productivity!

I like Laura's of forcing the orphans especially out into the open. Last week, I cleared and tidied by drawers --- and put out all the ifs, buts and maybes to sit on the bench with my jeans-in-use and my workout gear. This pile sits in a corner of my bathroom, which is especially helpfully, because now they're the first thing I see when I'm about to get dressed. I've really been squeezing them into outfits all this week (some horrors I will NOT post), but it's also helped to *write down* clearly why the garment is problematic. Going to give them a couple of months before I shut shop on them for good.

Loving Nicole's distinction of potholes vs holes too. As I remix more (and boy it is hard to see those poor orphans in a new light some days ::waving at Kelly::), I'm realizing I have fewer holes than I'd feared and more potholes --- can drive around them, and indeed MUST until I fill the true holes. Unless it's a really cheap fix (::cough:: bought camisoles again! ::cough::).

Waving at Shannon too, because I've just started drawing up capsules in my head and on a spreadsheet (also, thanks for the nudge, Christieanne!) --- more out of necessity in my case, because as I split myself more equally between places, my wardrobe has to split into encapsulated halves too, at least if I'm to avoid being a snail with an oversized, overstuffed shell each time I travel! But it's kinda nice. Same number of clothes, but feels like *different* wardrobes, as you say.

I like the holding zone idea. I also like the idea of 'forcing' yourself to wear the maybe items - kinda like a 30x30 or similar, in that if you have to wear it, either you'll come up with something that'll actually work that you wouldn't have thought of otherwise, or you'll once and for all that it's not for you.

This is a great plan IK! I have found that much of the clothes that go into the "holding zone" don't come back out, but my holding zone is pretty small hehe.

I really should work on my shopping discipline. Not that I'm a big spender but I do tend to want to keep replenishing "favorite" things. Like I can't imagine life without a nicer, black v-neck tee. So much so that I will buy a backup. But then sometimes the backup gets damaged and I tend to want to rush right out and replace it.

Texstyle - I would wait until SYC was over to replace a beloved item, UNLESS

- I needed it for a career reason.

- The perfect one lunged at me at the perfect price and it was clearly fate.

But unless those 2 things happened, I wouldn't even look if I were on SYC and a purist about it.

When you guys SYC, do you consider things like basic tees part of your wardrobe? My favorite color tees always see to wear out and that's the one thing I seem to buy quite often. Of course the colors always change so sometimes it's finding new favorites. Then again, I wear tees a LOT because I live in the south and have a very casual life style. I guess the same question for any "basic" items that you wear a lot. Button downs wear out too if you wear them frequently, so during SYC if your favorite white button down (or whatever basic) was getting a bit yellow or worn, would you replace it without a second thought or would you wait until you are done with SYC?

Kelly i think you hit the nail on the head! I totally agree, re-mixing takes a lot more thought and playing around then just buying new items. I'm really determined to last the month but at the same time it is making me find wardrobe holes i didn't even know i had.

Or maybe wardrobe pot holes? i can get around them but it'd make SYC easier if they were filled.

Awesome! I just did that myself--after the How Well do you Know Your Closet thread, I had already purged in the past, but I went through again and looked at each item in my drawers and closet and pulled out about a tote bag's worth of stuff that I am not really wearing. It's sitting in my laundry room. Some of it is stuff I haven't even worn yet but bought multiple colors (beige turtleneck, etc). I agree, it's good to get stuff out of your closet so you can properly see what's in there. High five!

IK, I've been finally pulling out things that I've held on to through many of the last purges, although I don't really wear them. It's time! Period. Off they go to tomorrow's swap at a friend's.
I'm with you, Kelly, it is hard for me too. But if we ever want to make our wardrobes work for us, it takes some effort on our part. Bummer, huh?

I find SYC and re-mixing so much harder than just picking up something new. I've been trying to be more accountable though and trying to wear different combinations of things that I already have. It's hard though. Good luck!

Fantastic plan IK! I've been thinking with SYC of making a couple of different work capsules and only have one capsule at a time in my bedroom closet and put the other one(s) in my spare closet. That way, I use the capsule for one week or two (depending how big I make it) and then rotating to the next, etc. This way maybe I won't get sick of my stuff as quickly?

I'm home with DD, who just had some big teeth pulled. So while the poor bunny snoozes and watches movies, I decided that I Have Had It with my closet.

I've been on Shop My Closet and, you know what, if I'm gonna do it I'm gonna DO it. So I pulled ou half of it, folded it, and put it in the empty drawers of my big plastic sewing bin in the office closet.

Now, before I buy ANYTHING, I need to make a list, wait on it a week, then browse my own private boutique in my sewing cabinet. And if I don't wind up using anything in the boutique, then out it goes!
