I always leaned towards black myself for the same reason as Marianna, so maybe I'll stick with that.
The more I think about t his, the more I wonder if I shouldn't just get my existing black, knee-length, chevron-stitched puffer coat with perfect pockets altered. :p

I still sneak out in my dead Land's End puffer, because it is my happiness coat: warm!

I like the second one. Not crazy about the quilting and tie belt on the first.

Yay Michelle -- shopping for a regular size coat! HUGE congrats to you. You are amazing. :)

I have two Lands Ends puffers and both are fab. I prefer black personally because they feel a bit more slimming to me/on me.

This one has horizontal quilting. But the cut is curved at the waist (apparently) in a princess shape. No vertical sewn seams that I can tell, but I may be mistaken about that.

I think the black would probably be better than the ivory, Michelle. It is tough to tell, but "ivory" might actually be "stone," so potentially soul-sucking.

Sorry for abandoning this thread temporarily, all - life happened again. :p
Ok, so it's really starting to sound like the second coat is the best option...but I need a bit more info on this. Is this one quilted as well? Does it have the vertical lines so necessary to a puffer? I thought I saw something about princess seams, which would get the job done, but I defer to you. I do love chevron stitching and the first coat appeals for that reason, but the pockets and belt issue sound like potential dealbreakers.

Last question...colourwise, for me...black or ivory? My primary winter coat is a lovely red wool one, so I'd rather not duplicate that colour for my puffer.

Silver Frost is a very light silvery or dove gray. The fur trim on that coat is mottled brownish - some places are dark, some light. The fur trim on the second coat is a more even light brown.
The first coat has patch pockets sewn onto the outside of the front panels (they would probably hit around thigh level). They look like the kind of patch pockets that are on the thighs of cargo pants, with a flap over them that snaps them closed. The second coat has more traditional in-seam pockets.
The coat Una linked to is very nice as well. The colors on it are very bright primary colors. The first coat you linked to has more interesting neutrals (to my eye) and the second coat you linked to has more traditional neutrals.

Michelle, the fur on both coats is sort of cream to light brownish with darker tips....I am not sure what sort of animal it is meant to mimic. In terms of length and texture, sort of like a fox tail. But not red.

Silver frost is a sort of light silvery grey colour. Blue undertones, so would look okay with your skintone but wouldn't be as good on you as black or red or white, I suspect.

Jacket #2 would work better without a belt. It looks as if that belt is perfectly removable. And if it DID work, you'd have a nice alternative style.

The coat that Una recommends does not have a detachable hood. So while the cut might be nice, it probably isn't the right puffer for you. #2 looks like your best bet.

The description of the first coat says that the belt can be removed, but there are belt loops so I'm not sure it would look right. The second one can be removed without a problem- and they show it without the belt in one picture- because there are no belt loops, just a back 'tunnel' thing the belt goes into.

Does that make sense?

Oh dear...this is rather confusing now. :)
I like the idea of a cleaner belt...but to be honest I tend to remove most belts on coats anyway. Despite my very pronounced waist, ost belts on coats hit me just wrong and it usually works out better to let my natural shape do the work.
So, to that end...which of these would look better if it wasn't belted? Or is that even an option, based on the styles you're seeing?
Also, what colour is "silver frost?" And what colour is the fur trim on these hoods?
My last puffer was a black coat, and I haven't ruled that out this time, but I do like the idea of a white one too.

Michelle, I think it is a great idea to order from Land's End. And you know what? It only costs $7.95 to return. So my advice is to order one of each of these coats (at least) including the one that Una recommended, and post pics for us to see. Each coat seems to have distinct advantages and possible disadvantages, but it's likely that at least one of them will work well. So why not order and try them and see how you feel with them on.

I like the look of Coat 1, Belt 2, and I also like coat 3 (Una's suggestion) for its princessy lines ... but worry it might be a bit casual for your style. So....I am not a lot of help I fear!

Also, much as I like the look of the belt on 2, I tried on a few coats with similar belts last year and had a great deal of trouble with them. I never did figure out why they didn't look good on me, but truly, they did not. It might be my short-waistedness (don't know if you have that issue as well) but whatever it was, they just looked odd, much as it seemed, in theory, that they would flatter. SO, for what it is worth.

Michelle, I prefer the second one. I'm not crazy about the shininess of the first coat, and I agree with Laura that belt on the second coat is easier to manage--I hate tie belts myself and avoid them at all costs--and it creates a super flattering silhouette. With your beautiful Snow White coloring, I'd love to see you in a white puffer. You'd also look fabulous in red, as long as it's a true red or a blue-based red. I do like the puffer Una linked to, especially the white and purple colors.

Many congratulations on your weight loss!

I like the puffer AG suggested; the stitching looks the most flattering, and overall the style, colors offered, and fabric seems most modern. I have a poison eye for patch pockets on coats, so that ruined the first coat for me.

Michelle, I like both, but I think the belt is an issue you have to consider. If it were me, i'd prefer the belt on the second coat. The first coat has a belt that's shown tied (the way some people knot the belt on a trench, with the buckle hanging). The second has a belt with a clip fastener. To me, that's much less fussy.

Hm, the quilting on the first one is just so segmented and puffy - it's a bit "Michelin Man" to me. I prefer the second. I actually don't mind the belt (tho it looks nice without as well) - because the belt is just so neat (clean lines) looking. I don't care for tie belts with puffers.

Both are very nice! I got my puffer coat at Eddie Bauer a few years ago - you could try there, and I always look at Mountain Equipment Co-Op when I'm looking for winter stuff. Sometimes their stuff looks too much like gear (as that is what they do - LOL!) but sometimes you can find quite wearable items and their stuff is great quality.

Both are great coats, Michelle, I especially love the first one for you because it's a little dressier and as Traci pointed out the chevron quilting is beautiful. I think both the Classic Navy and Deep Wine would be fantastic on you. Are you looking for a true knee-length style? The coats hit the model quite a bit above the knee, I don't see the length mentioned on the website, but the coat does come in Tall too, so perhaps it's worth calling Customer Service to ask about that.

I was going to say I like the first one, Michelle, but then I saw there were other colors for the second one. I'm not sure about orange, but the other colors look fine.

I don't think you can go wrong with either coat. It might just come down to fit, and I did like how the second one had a nice shape even without the belt (It can be taken off- I'm not a fan of the gearish elastic belt).

I think both of these are great options for you Michelle but the red really stands out for me. I think the colour would be fabulous on you and I like the style.

So I've lost weight. And now the puffer coat I bought just a couple of winters ago is too big to provide the warmth I need for a Canadian winter, which is disappointing as it's a great coat.
Lands End is actually a great destination for puffers, as many of us have already discovered, and they have cuts that will definitely fit my still very curvy body. There's also a special on winter outerwear that expires at end of day, so I better get my skates on if I want to take advantage.

I'm curious as to your feedback on these two coats. Does one look more stylish than the other?

2. http://www.landsend.com/pp/wom.....14_59.html

There's always a third option, too...forget these two and hoold out for something else. I run warm and fall is just beginning, so I have time to be patient if none of these are up to scratch.
