How exciting! I am sure you will be the best dressed sub out there! I just got a part-time job after being home for 20 years....very scary at first but I am quickly finding out that after raising human beings I can figure out just about anything I don't know. I think women bring common-sense and super organizational skills to the workforce after managing their households.

Well done. My feeling, being around universities a lot, is that what you wear indicates to the students how much you respect them and the importance of learning. Casual is just fine, of course, but the sloppy dressers just don't seem 'put together' enough to earn a lot of respect.

Karmyk, congratulations!! Please post how it's going once you are settled in. It's very inspiring to see women finding their place in the work world after a hiatus at home ... I am just starting to look for part-time/freelance opportunities again, and this is a great boost. Congrats again! I'm sure you'll be the most stylish teacher there

Awesome! I live in Canada - Toronto, and really any kind of dress goes in teaching. I've taught middle school and am now teaching kindergarten and generally dress pretty casually. I think, based on you WIWs, that you'll be the best dressed and most dressed up teacher in the building!

I agree with advice given here for the actual subbing. Have something in your back pocket, find the school and grades you like to teach, build a reputation there and you'll be booked all the time where you want.

Congratulations! I've been substitute teaching, and I very much prefer pre-K - 5th grade, and there are definitely some teachers who are better to sub for than others. In fairly short order, you will figure out who you like subbing for, and teachers will put you on their preferred list when you do well in their classroom. I like getting there early when I can to either go over lesson plans or in the case where there aren't good plans, to talk to another teacher in the same grade who can tell you what sections you are scheduled to cover in each subject.

I am hoping to get a full time position with the school next year, as I've been subbing for several years. While I am not qualified to be hired as a teacher (I have a college degree, but not in teaching), there are other positions with similar pay and I'd prefer to know where I'm going to be daily instead of finding out at 6:30 am each day! Good luck - you will do great!

Congratulations! My school district (the one I teach in) doesn't really have a dress code either and most of the teachers dress pretty casually. What grade levels will you be subbing in? I'm a teacher and I've taught Kindergarten, 2nd grade, elementary reading, high school sophomore seminar, and high school reading in global history and in English 10, and the best advice I can give you is to be prepared - have something for the students to do in case the teacher leaves nothing or very little for you. You don't have to bring your own materials in, but you might need to grab a book off the classroom bookshelf and come up with a writing prompt. You can always seek out one of the other teachers at that grade level for assistance.

Also, the students will try and tell you, "We already did that." DON'T BELIEVE THEM! I've seen many a sub fall victim to that line!

You'll be fantastic!

Congratulations! That was fast! Good for you.

What grade level will you be teaching?

I taught high school in the mid-90s to late 90s and university after that for quite a while. The high school I taught at was in a mixed rural area. Dress was VERY casual -- jeans were actually the norm. But I tried to wear nice footwear, a button front or other "dressier" shirt, often with a jacket or nice pullover or vest. On "dressier" days -- e.g. when giving a special presentation, meeting with parents or board members, etc. I would dress up in a skirt.

In teaching back then you needed to be prepared for chalk dust (probably less of a problem now) and for extracurricular activities that might be dirty.

Awhile back I posted asking you all for ideas for work. I did apply in my school district as a substitute teacher, and now I am in!

I haven't been on a payroll since 1994, when I had my first child. The district just raised the pay to $130 a day, which is now on par with other local districts.I hope to sub two or three days a week. This will be a nice extra income for us as soon we will have two kids in an expensive college at once.

With older kids who need me less, I felt like I needed somewhere to "be" during the school days and something to "report to" otherwise I would just be staring at the walls at home.

Did any of you go back to work after your kids were grown? What was it like to reenter the workforce for you?

I was surprised this school district has no dress code! I don't think I would ever dress sloppy or casual for a workday in a classroom, but this means that on days I just want comfort, I can wear the EF skirted leggings with some nice boots and a shirt under a sweater.

I don't think I need to go shop for work clothes, there are plenty of things I don't wear often that will now get a good workout, like pencil skirts and conservative pumps. Since denim is not forbidden, I can wear my denim blazer and nice dark jeans If I want.

Any teachers out there have tips for a sub?

K
