Let’s see you in these jeans, Shiny!

For the record, I group straight legs and skinnies into the "skinny" category. Straight legs are YOUR skinny Maya. And tapered skinnies look best with a high heel.

My eye is actually already used to seeing myself in leggings, because in the cooler months, when I run, I wear running tights.

What I don't like is the tunic over legging look. I like it just fine on other people, but on me, it reminds me of the early 90s when I embraced that look because I'd just had my babies and it covered my loose belly. This was when leggings had stirrups. Stirrup pants!! I lived in them for years.

And proportionately speaking, I think tunic over leggings shortens my legs too much. So I think the trick will be wearing the skinny jeans with a loose top that's not TOO long. I will have to experiment. And of course, no shoulder pads this time. :-)

The sales clerk said I should wear these jeans with a pair of boots this fall. I don't have boots that would work (all my boots are too tight to wear over anything but tights). I'm not sure I'd like that look for me, again, because I think it will shorten me too much. But we shall see.

Even though all you lovely people have given me good feedback on my skinnies, I just can't help but feel self conscious in them. Unless I'm wearing a tunic that covers my entire bum and at least half my thighs, I just don't feel comfortable in them. It's like wearing leggings to me.

Straight legs are fine. I have very big thighs that taper down to very small calves, so skinnies just make me feel like an upside down triangle...but with straight legs it's not that bad because they don't hug my calves.

Shiny, I wouldn't want you to look like a 15 year old. You sound just like my mom--"It looks good on YOU but never on me!" You will look great.

I hear you Maya - and you'll have to tell me what you honestly think when I model them for YLF!! I do think some skinny jeans make my legs look shorter for some reason. I may need to wear them with heels only. The straight legs are probably destined for flats.

And then there's my DD15, who totally rocks skinny jeans. She has the Jcrew matchsticks, a pair of ATL skinny jeans in golf-course green, and a pair of H&M skinnies in a fun checkerboard pattern. It's always disheartening when we swap jeans because they always look 1,000x's better on her than on me!! But, it's not fair to compare myself to my 15 year old DD, so I try not to. My goal is not to look like a 15 year old anyway!

NJC is national jean company. I have a store near my house, and they are awesome. In the past year, I have bought all my jeans - except for the white ones - there. They give awesome personal service, which is why I go there. Tell them what you are looking for, and they bring you armloads of jeans and as you try each one on, bring you armloads more to try on until you find the perfect fit. By now they know me when I walk in... and steer me towards the higher rise jeans, which they know I prefer.

I have tried Saks, Nordstroms, Bloomie's and Macy's and I have not enjoyed the experience anywhere near as much. NJC takes the fear and intimidation out of jeans shopping. If you have one near you, do try them out!!

Yay Shiny that's excellent news! I can't wait to see them on your future photos!

I agree Maya & Lissy. When they just came out I bought a super-cheap pair, wore it pretty rarely and thought that it's less-than-flattering on me. But after both adjusting to the look and finding YLF, now I actually like them, especially with the longer top. Altough, in my case they are more of skinny-straight hybrid if that makes sense, I would never wear the ones that completely hug the calf since my calves are supper skinny ( chicken or turkey legs, I'm not sure what's the right expression). I am actually considering investing in a nicer pair this fall!

Maya, I totally understand where you are coming from. I used to think you had to be SUPER skinny to pull them off and I refused to try them. However, I gave in about 6 months ago and bought myself a pair and I can't even believe how many people told me that they like them way better than boot cuts on me. They are now my go-to jeans. I think part of it was my eye adjusting and part of it was me getting over my initial reservations and actually integrating them into my wardrobe.

Dani, this is one of those things that just comes down to personal perception. I remember when skinny jeans first emerged I loved them on some people and hated them on others. After a while my eyes adjusted. But I still think at the end of the day, skinnies will never be as flattering on me as a straight leg or bootcut jean. It may be boring and safe, and I won't be giving up my skinnies any time soon, but I don't think it's THE most flattering thing on me. It's just something to break the monotony.

What is NJC?

Shiny, glad you found skinny jeans. I'm about to embark on my quest to find some as well. I'll keep in mind what you said, Maya, as I tend to be overly critical of things I try on, so we'll see.

I can only imagine that skinny jeans are perfect for you Shiny. You probably have the most ideal body type to pull them off IMO.

Frankly the more I look at them, the less enthused I am about them for the average person. I used to think anyone can wear skinnies if worn properly, but now I feel like this is going to be one of those trends I look back on and cringe at. No matter what I pair my skinnies with, or how I wear them, I am always going to look hippy-er than I do in in my bootcuts or straight leg jeans. I have a feeling the only reason they look okay to me is because I'm so used to them now.

But lucky you Shiny, you'll look good in them no matter what. Can't wait to see the pictures!

Over lunchtime I ran into NJC - I love that store! The clerks are so helpful. I asked for the Jbrand 814's Tanya had found online, but they didn't have those in stock. So I asked for any dark-wash skinny jeans with about a 9 inch rise. They quickly pulled me three to try on. I bought two of the three! I don't have pics but I'll take some when I get a chance:

1) Earnest Sewn Esra - dark wash, dark thread, VERY skinny (maybe 12 inch? I don't know...). Rise is slightly lower than 9 inches but it works, esp since I'll be wearing longer, looser tops with these anyway.

The clerks all ooh'd and aah'd and insisted I had to buy these, I think they were Angie followers because one went on and on about how since I'm petite this is definetly the style I should be wearing!!

I actually think these are the exact ones I tried on months and months ago, but didn't buy because I thought I was too old for them....

They only had them in a 26, so my only concern is that they might stretch too much. But I'm giving them a whirl so we'll see.

2) Citizens Elson - very similar to my Citizens Ambers, except straight leg instead of bootcut, and the rise is higher - 9 inches. Not as skinny as the Earnest Sewns (which are skinny skinny). I do love my bootcut Ambers, but the one thing I don't like about them is they are just slightly too low so I can only wear them with non-clingy shirts because my gut puffs out. These new ones solve that problem completely! Yeah! I suspect that these may end up being my new "go-to" jeans.
