Thanks everyone!! I'm a little more encouraged by the comments. I love this coat so I don't want to let it go if I can help it.

I sew so I can definitely handle small adjustments like moving the buttons over 1/2" or even taking in the sides a little. When I took the photo I was wearing a very light cardigan. I tried it over a heavier turtleneck and it fit perfectly, any smaller and it wouldn't have fit. So a lot depends on what's under it.

I'll try a few adjustments and see what happens. Thanks again for the honesty and encouragement too!

It's very pretty, great silhouette! Honestly, I like this fit for a wool coat that will most likely be added on top of other layers; I prefer my wool coats slightly large to accommodate cold weather layers. Definitely take it to a tailor to see if they can tweak for you before returning!

I really like the coat! My dressy winter coat is knee-length and I think it's a good length for a winter jacket. It could be a touch more fitted (so I guess I'm on Team Tweak at the Tailor) but overall I think it's nice and suits your style well. I'll be that fit-and-flare silhouette will look fab with dresses and skirts too.

I'm no fitting expert, but I thought knee length was supposed to be a good length for a dressy coat. If so, then I wouldn't take off from the length. I like how it looks, for what that's worth.

Agree this is close and that you should check in with a tailor.

Personally, I wouldn't take anything off the length -- I like my winter and rain coats to be almost knee-length for warmth and dryness, especially when the lowest button is where yours is (you'll already face some flap-blowing-in-the-breeze issues!).

I think a nip at the waist and some slimming along the sides will work wonders and not interfere with any blazer/sweater layering up top.

Good luck!

Before deciding on a shorter length, be sure to try the coat on with dresses. The best look is a coat that covers the dress so that the dress isn't hanging below the coat. Since you want this coat for dressy occasions, be sure not to make it too short. The length may look completely different when wearing a dress. Also keep in mind that a bit longer dresses are becoming more fashionable.
That coat looks so like your style. I hope you can make it work.

Yes, check with a tailor before returning. If it's not too much, you'll end up with a better fit than another choice off the rack. You could maybe even move over the buttons yourself a 1/2 inch or more to tighten, see what that does.

And be sure to consider how much you need to fit underneath it. There is no way I could find a coat that accomodated a blazer under it and still looked as good on the days I put it over just a light sweater - KWIM?

Oh, I hope you can make this work for you. I agree that it is a touch too long. In the photo with the scarf, the jacket doesn't appear to be too large for you to my eye. It really highlights your tiny waist

I second Beth and would see what a tailor can do - to me it looks like you just need to take 6-8" off of the bottom and it will be perfect! Right now, it makes your hips look bigger than they are because it flares out so much at the bottom, but if you take some length off it will end up creating an hourglass effect instead!

Thanks Stephanie and Sinead! I'll look at Land's End Canvas, we have one in town. Unfortunately this coat was on clearance and was the only one. I checked the website and they don't have it anymore either. I'm not sure if one size down would work because this one fits well in the shoulders (this is a common dilemma for me).

Ok, thanks everyone. I've very sad to hear it but I'd rather know now before I take the tags off.

Mary, I can't shop in petites because then the arms are usually too short. I have somewhat broad shoulders and if it fits in the shoulders, then it's usually a little large in the torso.

I might actually take this coat in to a tailor to ask before returning it. I really love the style and I think the fit is pretty close.

You might remember my post last fall about my wool coat that never fit right...(first photo).

I finally gave it away at a clothing swap and it worked out really nicely for another lady. I was happy but it left me without a dressy winter coat. I'm a cold climate so we have at least a month or two more of cold weather, but it's getting a little warm for my puffer. So I was thrilled today to find this one!

It's Nine West from Boston Store. I had to overexpose it to show detail. It's grey wool, which I love. It works with all of my scarves and hats. It has some waist detailing and a slight a-line, which I think works well for my shape. It's hard to tell from the photo but it has a slight vintage or classic look. I really like it! What do you honestly think? The bottom might be a little crumpled from being in the bag. Thanks!
