Beth Ann, yes, so true--it's the learning as much as the outfits themselves. I think berry/wine deserves its own capsule. Along with gray/taupe, of course.

Yeah, FC! I think this is a great capsule, and I'm a fan of the bf's! What about subbing out the tunic for a claret/berry/oxblood colored topper?

I think the learning process that comes from making the capsule is as important as the capsule itself.

You are exquisite. Your sewing skills are amazing. And I am in awe of your ability to select and coordinate these gorgeous pieces.

Personally, my faves are the BF outfits. You had trouble and I just can't see it. It looks fabulous from the get-go. Indeed , I really like #1. For the long blue/green tunic, may I suggest blousoning and/or belting to lift the hemline? Or maybe just grab the hem on one side and tuck it up (not sure I am explaining well but if you recall the blue tunic Suz has, the hemline does something similar).

Day Vies, my capsule muse, thanks for chiming in! I agree with you and with Lisa, that the tunic and coated leggings are a good combo--best way to wear both, imo, among these selections.

Lisa, thanks for your thoughtful comments; I agree with your take on proportions.

Susie and JennyK, thank you!

Angie, you are so kind--and a wonderful teacher with a fun grading system! I like the idea of a semituck on the tunic. It has a little elastic dropped waist (that doesn't show much from the front), so I'm not sure that will work on this one, but hey, it's worth a try!

Pil, LOL at your potato sack comment! The blouse and the sweater (found on different occasions) were both very obvious purchases for me--no-brainers.

Such beautiful pieces and combinations, Firecracker, and you really have a handle on *your* colors. You could wear that gray silk blouse with a potato sack and I would love the outfit. Even though I feel like I have too many pieces in my wardrobe, I don't have an exquisite piece like THAT, though it doesn't need to be a blouse.

FWIW my faves are all combinations with *the* blouse, and 15 & 18. Hmmm, I sense a color pattern here.

You have been building capsules in your wardrobe intuitively for years, FC. That's why you could put this together so successfully. Well done. xo

I am going to come back to look at each picture more closely but I just had to say that all of the pieces are wonderful; you have a gorgeous wardrobe. You may need to tweak some of the proportions but the colors, fabrics and styles are great elements to work with. I like the idea of different capsules based on volume and proportions.

I like the coated leggings with tops in 10 and 18 best, I like this length with such a tight fit bottom. Those leggings are really neat! I also really like your BF jeans outfits, especially 6, 7 and 8. I think the best part of capsule creation is coming up with preset outfits to wear on rush days, having new outfit combinations I would not have thought of previously and being able to identify wardrobe holes. Nice job here!

I think this is a great capsule. I love the elements. I agree with you that the proportions need work. That is where the work comes in. The good thing is you have a record of how each piece fits so now you can go back and add a better proportioned piece. I think all the colors play very nicely together and those black jeans are Killer!

The green/teal tunic is really long and doesn't work with a bottom that has any kind of volume. I love it with the shiny leggings best. I just want to shop in your closet. I love your taste level. The other tunics work much better. #4 & #9 are my favorite. Congratulations!!!!

Thanks Karie, Caro, and Suz!

Caro, you bring up a good point for me regarding capsules. Or rather a question: should all the bottoms go with all the tops? Is that one of the aims of a capsule like this? I'll have to re-read Angie's post.

Okay, yep--answered my own question. The bottoms should each go with all the tops and toppers. Well, that's quite the challenge. hmph!

Thistle and Rachylou, thank you!

Kellygirl, thanks for your thoughts and encouragement! I am not liking that tunic over BFs, either. That's a pairing where I can see skinny jeans working instead.

Ingunn, thank you! I like your picks, too.

Suz, thanks. I'm loving the jacket, and I find it goes with so much in my closet. I'm glad I went back and got it. An expensive item, but how often does a leather jacket come along in just the right color and style? I need to study your capsule and comment--just glancing at it, I thought your outfits came out great.

Vildy, high five! I like your picks! I think #9 is my favorite, and #4 is up there, too. Others I would wear are 18 & 19, 7 (I feel like this is my version of tomboy style), 10, and maybe 21 (with the responses it has gotten here). Oh, I'd wear 6 and 22, too--why not?

It's really tricky, isn't it? I like that you forged ahead to see what you would see. That was my approach, too. Like you, I didn't like all the results, but I learned a few things in the process.

The new leather jacket is amazing on you! Gorgeous and great purchase. The coated skinnies are cool, too, but I completely understand your feelings about styling. I have a pair of reversible skinnies -- coated on one side and regular denim on the other. I do wear them in winter especially (they are quite soft and cozy and great for tucking into tall boots) but on the coated side, I find them...a bit...out there.... unless I am wearing a longer top. And I am one who regularly wears skinnies with fitted and tucked tops! But with the coating, it's just...I don't know. My faves are 10 and 21 of these, and #4 overall!

I love the BF jeans outfits! The only one I'm not sure about is 13/14. I think it might be a little too much volume and you might need to tuck. The jacket reigns the blouse in some but it creates another line--jacket, blouse hem, cuffs. It looks arty but is less flattering that the tucked versions--at least to my eye. I love all of the black slouchy looks. They all look polished and pretty. 10 and 21 are my favorites of the coated skinnies. They fit you so well and look so edgy and cool. I think the coated skinnies look best paired with tonal tops so the pants really shine (lol!) Pun intended Great capsule, Firecracker! You have an amazing wardrobe!

Cindy, I'm thinking I may need a "volume on bottom" capsule and a "skinny bottoms" capsule for this color palette.

Great outfits! (and I am envious of your sewing skills.) I have to agree that the boyfriend jeans don't work as well as the slim pants.

Okay, I did what I thought I would not do: I made a capsule, and not for a trip.
I followed the guidelines in Angie's recent post: http://youlookfab.com/2013/08/.....r-for-fall
Here's a recap of my experience.

I had trouble right from the start: what colors to include? I started with warm gray/taupe, black, and olive, with some white and blue thrown in. I felt like my colors were pretty much all neutrals, rather than having any accent colors. But I forged ahead.
One goal was to include some recent acquisitions, to work them into outfits: boyfriend jeans, gray leather jacket, olive print silk blouse, gray silk blouse, black oxfords.

Photo 1 is the layout. These are the items:
3 bottoms:
- full-length boyfriend jeans (Fidelity)
- coated jeans/leggings in dark gray (AG)
- black slouchy skinnies with zippered pockets and bling on front pocket flaps (MosMosh)

6 tops:
- blurry print gray-white-blue cross-over neck tee (made by me)
- gray and white scroll print cowl-neck cotton pullover blouse (made by me)
- starry-sky (or abstract flowers?) print rayon tee, black with grays (made by me)
- gray silk chiffon pullover blouse (Vince)
- marbled greens and blues print sheer knit peasant tunic (made by me)
- olive and black print silk pullover blouse (Nexx)

2 toppers:
- collarless leather jacket with quilting detail in "nickel" (Hinge)
- long open-front 3/4 sleeve linen knit cardigan (Nic & Zoe)

2 pairs of shoes:
- shiny cross-hatch black suede oxfords (Naya)
- graphite nubuck heeled booties (Paul Green)

1 belt:
- black with studs, rhinestones, and ornate pewter buckle (Bed Stu)

1 bag (not photographed in outfit photos):
- shoulder bag with flap in dark ash ("Marzipan Pig" by Aunts & Unicles)

Photos 2 through 22 are the outfits I made with these items.
I don't see myself wearing some of these outfits out of the house, particularly some of the outfits made with the boyfriend jeans and the coated denim leggings.
I found the boyfriend jeans hard to style with the tops and toppers in the capsule. I think the capsule would have worked better with skinny jeans. So maybe I can just look at some of these outfits and substitute my skinny jeans for the boyfriends.
I also found the coated leggings hard to style. They probably need to be the basis of their own capsule, or a capsule based on skinny pants and leggings.

Nevertheless, I came away with several outfits I can wear in the fall, with some of my new purchases. Yay!

I'm still a bit confounded by capsules, but I've made a start.

What do you think? Does my capsule help anyone with thoughts about their own possibilities? Any thoughts or ideas are welcome.
