I haven’t seen that Italien sizing yet, just 1, 2, 3.
I don’t think it’s an official rule about the sizes, but someone did say recently that she was upset by them, both sizes, as in the title of the post, and my mention of a measurement in inches. So yeah, I prefaced my comment with a warning for anybody who wants to skip over it.

I think our bodies all change with kids—either carrying them and giving birth or the huge shift in priorities once we have them. I didn’t know if that was at the same time as you were adjusting to new size systems in which you and I are on the “huge” side of things. I usually tell myself when traveling that I don’t have to be prepared for every single contingency, because there are stores where I’m going. If we ever go to Japan (or any of East Asia, and frankly, from the Arab people we see here, probably the Middle East as well), we cannot have that mindset. At 6’3”, my son already complains that shorts are too short (partially because he wants them to go down so very far on his legs). If he needed an article of clothing where you are, I think he’d be out of luck.

I think Germany and France use the same EU sizing. But I’m not really sure, because the only clothing I’ve bought this year are underwear and jeans, both of which seem to have their own sizing systems. Took me forever to get the jeans right!

EDIT*Trigger warning talking about sizes*

Oh I didn't know we weren't allowed to talk about sizes. I'm sorry to anyone if I've offended.

I think the actual sizes have stayed the same in the UK but maybe what is seen as acceptable seems to be on the smaller side now all over everywhere...

In Japan i've never fit anything so don't even bother haha. If I get anything its like XL or XXL.

And yes my body changed a little after having kids and I dunno I just enjoy eating more now haha. I stay at around the same size but its def about one size bigger than I used to be as an older teen and young adult. I'm okay with that. I'm an FR 40 (IT44 though so watch out on Italian sizing) . Is German 40 same as France one?

We should probably put trigger warnings on these comments, because there are actual size numbers in them.

Interesting how you’ve kept track of your size. I know now that I’m a 10 or 12 in the UK, about a 6 or maybe a 4 back home. I can see the way US sizes are changing, because some of my older clothes from when I was in my 20s are size 8. But for a while, when we got here, I had no clue what size was what. It was freeing. I figured out I was a 40, and that’s what I was. If I had seen a conversion chart to US sizes, I probably would have balked at that size, but as it was, I just accepted it. I was in the middle of changing sizes through some weight loss. The Muji jeans I got then were the biggest in the store. They were a little tight, but seemed ok. They are way too big now. Did you have your kids and go through all those body changes in Japan?

So funny about the vest & feeling naked without it. You probably know that Northern Europe is the opposite way. My son and I just got back from a camping trip. There were spider webs around the hooks in the showers, so I left my towel just outside it. There was nobody else on the campground anyway. Then half a dozen campers showed up, and those who showered did the same thing. Some dressed next to the showers, but one young woman strolled across the campground while using her towel to wipe her face. That absolutely wouldn’t fly at home. We weren’t bothered. If anything, I was glad to see my son didn’t turn his head or in any way acknowledge the naked woman walking right in front of him.

EDIT*Trigger warning talking about sizes*

Thanks FashIntern, I went away because I was getting frustrated at nothing fitting me that I was ordering. I soon realised that perhaps I was hoping for my body to fit into brands that weren't right for me. So far i've had more luck with high end stuff. I always had in the past but I was hoping to make the more ethical brands work too. A lot of them just aren't made for tall people.

I have the cotton stretch scoop tops from Filippa K and can't recommend them enough. The ones i bought were about 3 years ago and I just bought one in black along with some vest tops (to use as underwear as the ones from muji I bought years back are falling apart). Here in Japan everyone wears both a bra and a vest, and I thought it odd at first but went along and now I can't possibly not wear a vest. I feel naked without one underneath my tops now haha.

I'll check Anchie's posts out I think I saw a few back when I joined but should check on her progress. Building one outfit at a time sounds like a good way to go but a lot of the pieces i'm coveting right now would take two months to purchase unless I can find sale items, which is what i'm trying to do. I really hope those jeans fit. The jeans thing is really driving me crazy. Not managed to find even one online, I really need to go in store but not in Japan, abroad. I'm going to keep the jeans though as long as they fit the bum/thigh area, i'll get the waist taken in if it is too big...then again I might well be underestimating my size but honestly feel huge nowadays when my size is like the top of the sizes...when I was young it would be at the mid to small end... In the UK in a regular shop we'd have 8, 10, 12, 14, 16,18 all available (sometimes a 6 and sometimes a 20) and I was a 10 then. Now I'm a 12 and probably not going to be a 10 again, it takes too much work and I'm a very healthy weight for my height so I won't be doing that. Anyway most things nowadays are listed like UK 4,6,8,10,12...and i'm like WHAT?!

Sorry I'm totally rambling now...

Thanks for the detailed reply! With all the wear your clothes get, that’s a really strong recommendation for Filippa K—I’ll keep my eyes open for that brand. And I think I’ve heard Armed Angels mentioned recently as a sustainable/ethical brand, so I also appreciate your comment on their lack of longevity. And I hear you on the joyfully /aggressively nursing baby ;)

Btw, I know you were away for a while. You might find Anchie’s wardrobe rebuild interesting. Her body has gone through some major shifts, so she’s pretty much starting over. The way she’s doing it is by getting one complete outfit per month. I think her first post explaining this was in February. She then posted one outfit per month, and a longer post in June that shows all the pieces together—lots of mixing and matching possibilities in that capsule. She has her wardrobe in finds, and I bet she probably has a collection with the things she’s gotten this year.

FashIntern, i'm not even sure how many I have, I think i'm going to lose quite a few tops soon (to holes, being threadbare etc). The fact I have so little means I have to wear them so often (which I actually like). It also means they get washed often too so don't last more than a couple of years. The exception is my Filippa K tops, they have lasted 3 years and still look great. I'm going to buy them in a few more colours.

Also the ones I do have that will last (like a couple of Elizabeth Suzan OS pieces) don't really work for my body, I look a bit like i'm wearing a potato sac (and definitely not like Monroe wore hers haha). They are very comfortable and useful though. I'm keeping those of course for lounge wear and gardening purposes but yeah really my wardrobe is starting from almost scratch. I also have a wool pair of trousers where the seat material has become thin and the shape of my bottom is too clearly visible. The material clings too much and I feel very exposed for Japan.
I won't throw them away but its not something I feel comfortable wearing anymore. The last is a uniqlo skirt that I want to retire. There isn't anything wrong with it so I'll just put it in storage for a while. I've been wearing it very very regularly (at least once a week) for about 7 years so want to put it away for a little while and come back to it later on when I'm nostalgic for it. So all in all, what I'd keep in my closet going forward would probably be the 2 Filippa K tops, a pair of cos culottes (I bought about 5 years ago before I realised cos was owned by h&m) and burgundy order made linen dress by Ode to Sunday. I found an Elizabeth and James jacket in husbands closet I bought about 8 years ago from TK maxx but when the brand was a luxury item sold in department stores. Seems they went bust but not before having a more accessible label in kohls. I'll probably keep that too.

Of course i'll not actually get rid of any of the remaining clothes but a lot are on their last legs and I won't be replacing them. I have 3 knits and my favourite one was ripped beyond repair by my littlest one when he was a baby wanting to be breastfed haha. The other two are okay so i'll keep them until they wear out but I won't replace them. One was from Armed Angels which is supposed to be and ethical and sustainable brand but the quality of all the things I bought was pretty poor so I don't thing they are very sustainable at all...very very thin fabric for the tops and the knit was slightly better but def not a brand i'd recommend.

So now your wardrobe is approaching 25 items? I don’t think even the most severe minimalists could criticize that!
I’ve also been amazed by sales associate who nail my size on the first try, including when I went shopping for swim suits a few months ago. It was so much more comfortable than having to guess and try with different numbers. Doing it when you were pregnant, and getting a straight size that fit, is an extra superpower!
These jeans both look great. I hope you enjoy wearing them in good health for years to come.

I tried on a pair of Amo jeans yesterday — a new to me brand. They were adorable but cut so narrow that they are not for my body. This is my problem with the vast majority of the jeans I try on. That and high waists that are too long for my rise. Jeans are hard!

Just was casually browsing the Harvey Nichols website (British luxury department store) and came across a pair of Stella McCartney white cropped jeans. I had previously pinned a Denham pair so similar as a "considering". I checked the sizes and all were sold out except one pair in my size and one pair in like a teeny tiny size so I had to have them...they were around 65% off I think. It will probably take about a week for them to arrive so now i'm waiting and hoping they'll fit. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Finds are the Denham ones I was considering and the Stella ones i've just bought.
